South American players 90s
South American players 80s
South American players 70s
South American players 60s
South American players 50s

The general idea will be:
1) Divide each decade into 3 eras: early / mid / late
2) Each role had a long list of +/- 10 players.
3) At least a player nominated should have had a big impact in his local league at that time.
Sources and references will be welcome.

Impressive work as always msioux!

Here's some suggestions/honorable mentions that could be on the list.

- Modesto Bria (Paraguay): One of the best CH in Brazil playing for Flamengo. He could be in the list, deserving as much as Rui (São Paulo).
- Oscar Basso (Argentina): Really good CB still remembered as one of the best from San Lorenzo and Botafogo's history.

If I remember more names I'll post here.

Again, superb collection of names! :smileani:

It is better to read the magazines of the time as it does Msioux, that reduce all to simple data as does Dearman.

Example for compare:

Zamorano made 348 goals and Salas had 249 .

For Dearman
Zamorano is better that Salas
But using the phenomenological method

Salas is better that Zamorano, because in his time was considered more technical.
That information is given by the magazines

Why Msioux method is more rigorous? because the objective is to account for the social events. We are talking about social facts no of records on plants.
And most important is take the social fact in YOUR context, clean the historical prejudices and overcome the reduction of data.
Derman makes the mistake of being reductionist

The Phenomenological method should be applied
putting the social context where the event is raised, "in parentheses" (Epoché)
and give an account objectively of expert opinion in your present with references and citations.
This is rigor
Msioux does something very good here.
He classifies each period at specific times.
This allows turning "in Parentheses" (Epoché) the contexts of each time.

Our task is to provide references and citations from experts rated each time.
This will allow us to recreate the context and sort the facts.

Heroe, for Dearman, he clearly mentions that he using "STATISTICS" as the primary method of judging historical players.
I agree Salas should rank higher than Zamorano or any other Chile footballers, for that matter, but if you ask most people who watch them (Zamorano in Real Madrid and Inter, Salas in River and Lazio), I believe would choose Zamorano over Salas.
Why? Maybe because Real Madrid and Inter are more popular than River and Lazio.
Most of the world only follow three European football league week in week out, Italian, English and Spanish since late 1980's.
None of use have access to cable or internet until early 2000s.
And Lazio clearly rated lower than Inter in any era, even in their Scudetto season.

Me? my reason is simple Salas actually played well and scored goals in 1998 World Cup, while Zamorano did not.
I think Salas a fraction ahead of Zamorano as the best Chile player ever.

Correction: After Figueroa!!! :D
So, Figueroa, Salas, Zamorano, Sanchez as my personal Chile best players.

Why I dont like Dearman ranking? He too mathematics in approach, maybe because he did not actually watch the past games.
And partly he is too snobby to respond to my asking of his comment about Thai football history.

Yes, great source for later projects of retconned World Cup tournaments.
We have done Uruguay 1930, I am planning for Italy 1934, France 1938, Brazil 1942 and Indonesia 1950!!!
The premise is that Brazil already get the last World Cup.
With most Europe was battered by recent war, FIFA with persuasion of Karel Lotsy (a FIFA vice president, KNVB high-rank officer and former VUVSI/ISNIS chairman) to award the tournament to the newly independent Indonesia.

Will be watching from afar, and make observations on the players.

The important thing is to get the impression of the people of the time.
The science of printing and consciousness as social facts is phenomenology.
I'm bored of the reductionist that believe that are right.
They summarize all at data and this is to make reduced.
Reduce is lose the rigor and deform the information
We are not talking here of plants, we are talking about social facts.
The rigor consist in to put in parentheses (Epoché) the object of study of all that is out of context. Clear all prejudice, appendage and reductionism.
Msioux do well when classified the players in times, because it allows us to put the matter in parentheses and our task is to find information and expert opinion of the time to recreate the social context to justify the classification of a list for the best of each time.
For me, work of Msioux is the best this forum.

Hey men, don't try to undervalue Dearman's work. He got my respect for his great job, effort, research and open minded to advice with a good backup supporting the ideas.

It just that i prefer to did something different. I listed the class players within a small range of years, to make it easy to compare them.

Dearman did the next step, trying to make comparable different eras and contexts, that's explain the formulas, but take it as an aproximation.

#17 · (Edited)
I do not want to devalue the Dearman work, I want that he to take intoaccount the most important qualitative issues.
The soccer is different in every culture yet always South America proposed a elaborate style. I think (for example), that he overestimate to the Eastern Europeans and devalue the Latin countries because he certainly do not realize that football in South America has a long tradition and has left more influence on modern football ... The Eastern Europeans, have never inherited "football schools", style football (this is a qualitative argument) , because they always played to physical and defensive football. The Eastern European play has less elaboration that the play of South America and this must be considerate in the time to compare, because the record is partial.

Friends, the data is not everything. the data reduces, he not make generalize.
The problem with the old positivist methods is that they can not maintain a generality.
The questions are:
How do you do to rank to Ronaldo above to Klose in WC?
To discard the record of red cards as a true source of information?
How to compare between a forward and a defender?
The Dearman method is good for ratings.
The Dearman work is a great source of information.
However, you can not believe that you can aspire to give off value judgments about facts that are the terms of the impressions.
