I am not OK with Boloni as centre back. Dobay was a pure winger in the WM pre war system..So I suggest this team

-------------Dumitrache-------------
Dobay--------------------Bodola----
---------Hagi-------Petchovsky-----
--------------Boloni----------------
Chivu---------Popescu----------Petrescu
---------------Belodedici----------------
--------------- Voinescu

Where's Cocis,Florescu,O.Petre,Surdu? Nicolita is there, these guys should be too ;)

I also think Chivu is among the worst LB's we have and I'd put Rat there before him anyday.

For msioux75
I believe we are well represented at Attacking midfielders and second strikers: Hagi, Dobrin, Balaci, Dembrovsky, Bodola, Baratky, Iordanescu, Raducioiu, Mutu, Ozon... all players of grand quality. I put there 12 keepers because I believe its hard to choose between them, even we dont had ever a world class goalkeeper (maybe only Voinescu in the 50s, when our national team didnt qualify for World cups).
About Vogl, I dont know how to put the defenders in the 2-3-5 system. I saw we played -Albu, Vogl-... or -Burger, Vogl-..., so I suppose Vogl played on the left side of our defense. I never saw a lineup where Vogl was starting as midfielder.
For cutthroat
I accept Mocanu is underrated, how about putting him third, only after Chivu and Ungureanu? Raffinsky was the central midfielder in the 2-3-5 system
For DinamoBuc
In my oppinion Chivu is better than Rat even as left back. But its just my oppinion, you have yours too, and I respect it.

About Nicolita. I am not his fan, but he has a good period in 2006-2008 at the club and in the national team also. His first season in France wasnt the worst either. Tell me what right midfielders do we had in our history and I forgot, better than him, and I will put them in the list. I am not ok even with Sabau, but I didnt find another one ...I believe it was not our best position in the Romanian footbal history.

It's difficult to compare players from different eras, especially those of the interwars period. Plus we haven't seen many players of the past so we have to 'judge' solely by their achievements or what football historics write about them.

Having said that, I'd like to say some things:

-Stelea as second GK, pffff...I don't know, I'm not very convinced by that. To tell you the truth, I don't rate Lobont as an inferior keeper to him. I'd place Lung over him. And Duckadam, even if he had a much shorter career, the guy won a CL for Steaua with a Guiness record, he makes the top-3 for me. And I'd put Adamache a bit higher. I'd take Prunea off the list :)

-In RBs, probably Satmareanu would be the third for me. In LBs Virgil seems to underrate Rat a bit. And why not Klein in this list? Didn't he play most of his career as LB or LM? He was probably a superior LB to Ungureanu. I wouldn't consider Filipescu a LB, even if he played sometimes there.

-The CBs list is quite good, but why Prodan so high? Prodan and Ciobotariu over Goian? IMO Goian is a more dominant defender than them, who were secondary players in my view.

-In DMs no way I put Radoi over Galca. What has Radoi done in his career? Some good years in Romania and then to Arabia. In the NT he hasn't made an impact. Galca played most of his career in Spain, even winning titles there. In the NT he played much more games with good performances in WCs and Euros. That about achievements. From a football point of view, Galca was clearly superior. More technical, intelligent and with a deadly left foot. In fact I rate Galca superior to both Lupescu and Radoi. Radoi was only better at defending.

-Why Radu Nunweiller as DM and not as playmaker? In Mexico'70 he played with number 10 and he seemed to be the playmaker. A very good midfielder btw.

-You were quite generous including Nicolita in the RMs list. Why not Reghecampf? :) I would consider Adrian Ilie a second striker and Raducioiu a striker.

-Mutu a bit underrated.

Of course this is just my opinion. Everyone has one :)

Duckadam, really? C'mon, the guy had like one cap. Sure, he can save a couple of penalties, but that hardly constitutes a great keeper.

Apolzan is considered by the old people who saw him playing the best Romanian defender ever. He reached only 22 caps because in that period Romania played only 3-4-5 international matches by year. He was a classic "libero" (sweeper),before Armando Picchi in the 60s and Beckenbauer in the 70s. I think he deserve his place here in the national top...
Nah, I checked. He played something like half of the internationals in his time, so I guess he wasn't considered irreplacable or anything. Yeah yeah, he was a pioneer and everything, but I'm not sure if opposition strikers were as impressed as the old timers. Do you know how he was perceived abroad?

About Stelea...Its a long discussion. He is the most capped keeper, with 5 final tournaments (3 world cups,2 euros)...Maybe if he played against Sweden instead of Prunea, we could have another history..He had many good matches (against Colombia for instance) and not so many mistakes. His problem is the club career, he played Salamanca, Samsunspor...But even Lobont played Ajax and Roma, I doubt he could be placed higher than "Arnold"...Maybe I am wrong, but thats my oppinion.
Meh, Lobont is mostly a bench-keeper in the bigger teams, so it's not exactly a sparkling career. Stelea played several seasons of La Liga at Salamanca, so that's not a bad place to be. He also had a spell in Mallorca pre-Bosman. Without Bosman, where would Lobont have played?

At any rate, Romania seems pretty thin on the goalie roster.

For "hero"
 thank you, its quite OK!

For GICA
I waited for your oppinion and I agree with some points. I realize Klein was playing in the left most of the time, but probably in his first years he played as a DM too. About Prodan and Ciobotariu....They were good defenders in 1994 and 1998 World Cups, with no mistakes. I think Prodan had a little badluck with his injuries, but both was defenders with good qualities, even scoring goals. Maybe Goian deserved a higher position, but that was only an oppinion, nobody is perfect.
I agree about Radu Nunweiller..he was more attacking midfielder than DM.

I dont see Raducioiu as a striker like Camataru or even Moldovan was. He comes from behind, he loved playing counter-attacks. About Mutu, what did he do in his career? I dont believe he deserve to be over Iordanescu or Raducioiu...his 5th place its ok for me.

Good to see your work virgil.

I'm surprised that you don't put into your ideal starting eleven to Nicolae Dobrin, whom I consider arguably the best Romanian footballer ever alongside Gheorghe Hagi. I think he should be a very must.

#20 ·
Yes Lacatus had scored 113 goals (103 in our first division, 3 in Italy, at Fiorentina, and 7 in Spain, at Oviedo) and another 13 in the national team. He also scored 17 goals in all european competitions. He won European Champions Cup in 1986 with Steaua, and many national honors at the same team. He is considered a symbol by the Steaua fans.
About his position on the field, in the 80s he played as outside right forward in the classic 4-3-3 system. In the 90s, when Steaua played 4-4-2, he became a right forward, or a second striker, if you wish.

About Dobrin presence in the best 11..I dont make this team, "Hero" took the leaders of the position tables and put them in a squad. Probably a more acurate team could be:
Voinescu - Petrescu, Popescu, Belodedici, Chivu - Petschovsky (Boloni), Dobrin, Hagi, Dobay (Balaci) - Bodola, Dumitrache. Coach: I. kovacs

Oh!, I understand mate, I think that could be a more accurate ideal team.

The problem with that trio is the overall results in the 50s. The 30s generation had 3 preseces in World Cups (30, 34, 38) and some glorious victories in Mitropa Cup (vs. AC Milan, Napoli, Ferencvarosi, Ujpest...)..The 70s had the Portugal elimination from Mexico 1970 and a good presence there, at Guadalajara. The most recent generation, including Hagi and Popescu, had other 3 world cup tournaments, with quarter-finals in America.
The 50s and the 60s had nothing, even they were good individualities. Thats the history...I believe we can include Voinescu, Apolzan, Petchovsky and Ozon in a top 50 for sure, but its impossible to put all in the first 11.

Fantastic list Virgil:)The biggest suggestions that I have are:
-Lung is miles ahead of Stelea in any way you want to put it
-Negrila is better than Rednic IMO
-Stefanescu over Belodedici(this one could be Biased but in terms of sheer talent for me he's at least equal with Popescu)
-Parcalab should be first in his role(praised by Helenio Herrera)
-Oblemenco is really to low...
And I think Petschovschi was more of an AMC than B-T-B Mdf...
I think you forgot at DM's a true legend,Nicolae Simatoc.

P.S. I saw you're unsere in placing Balaci in the All-time XI.Wath's with that mate:D???
IMO the all time first eleven would be like this

----------------Mutu
-----------Balaci------Hagi
------Petschovschi---Dobrin
---------------Baratky
Chivu--Stefanescu--Popescu--Petrescu
--------Voinescu/Lung(Can't decide)

i just saw your old post. this is one offensive team.
baratky as dm? the guy is your 4th playmaker lol.
poor petchovschi will have to do all the defending by himself up there. he won´t have air left for going forward. better put in a real anchor.
chivu was an excellent lcb. i have seen him play live many times in that position. as a fullback he is really not that great.
mutu is ok as a poacher. with all the playmakers you need a fox. but his scoring ability was not that all-time legendary.

hello pele10brazil
I agree with Simatoc, he deserve a top 5 in his position (DM or box to box mf). About Stelea vs Lung we discussed latger and everyone respects the other oppinion..I respect yours.
About Belodedici vs Stefanescu, its a close match, and again its your oppinion. I preffer belo for his excellent perfomances in the first part of his career with the 2 Champions Cups, and a good World Cup 94 tournement.
About Balaci, no problem he deserver the first 11.

PS Tell me why Mutu is over Dumitrache or Bodola....I am not sure even of the results of a poll or a contest Mutu vs Raducioiu or Camataru.....

#38 ·
Well, over Dumitrache it's prrety easy to explain..Mutu was better than Florea at almost everything(expect heading),even at drribling,Florea's best "weapeon".And look at their carrer season-wise.Florea had maximum 5 good seasons, while Mutu had at least 7-8 seasons. And with Bodola wath can I say,I think I consider Mutu better because he proved himself aboard(And you can't say things like Bodola was clerly more talented but didn't had Mutu's chance because Mutu is also an imense talent)

P.S.About Stelea, I respect ur decision but may we have a little debate on it?:D

#44 ·
Virgil, wath do you think of Baratky's versatility??Wath positions did you heared he could play?

#45 ·
Virgil,I spoted another two legendary defenders that you missed,Alexandru Boc and Dumitru Macri.

#47 ·
To pele10brasil
Maybe I forgot Boc and Macri, but at the central defenders top I had too many players.Zhey are in a top 20 at this position, anyway, perhaps Stefan Iovan too.
About Baratky I heard he played in a very "free role", so we can considerhim or an inside forward, or an outside forward, or maybe a striker...even in the WM system the 5 players upfront were sometimes changing places betwen themselves.

to Hero

Good team! But maybe you can put Belodedici too in the substitution group, what do you say?
