Should the Catalan players boycott the Spanish NT?

In Spain, the illegitimate members of the Tribunal Constitucional want to re-write the Estatut approved by the Parliament and voted by the Catalans (Yes won with the 74% of the votes). This is a tribunal that had to renew its members since several years ago, but a block of the Spanish nationalist party PP don't allow it.

In this situation, I think that the Catalan people must stand up against an attack on democracy. An attack on the Catalan and Spanish parliament and, what is worse, they're revoking the results of the votes.

Given this situation, I believe that, if we're that unwanted, the Catalan players should refuse to take part of any event representing Spain in any sport. I'm calling Puyol, Xavi, Piqué, Capdevila, Cesc Fàbregas and Victor Valdés, if he finally gets called.

Wtf K4? I thought who's the one opening new threads without even introducing himself.. :)

Anyway I think they should play for Spain and show their worth.

Then my question is... if the votes of the Catalan people are not valid, why is it valid that our people represent Spain at all?

I think there's too much confusion in that. We shouldn't be the slaves of Castille. If we're not respected, we should not give a damn for their symbols.

They don't need to prove anything. They already did and they can always do with the people that love them.

Well... they should represent Spain at least this WC.. bcz I really think that Spain is going to win it.. I want them to acheive everything they can.

This is the big reason why they should do something about it. It would be a massive slap in the face for the centralists and the Castillians. If they think they can win the WC, they should do it with Castillians, not with the people they hate.

Probably, the reaction of the players would get the support of the "good part of Spain", because this is an unacceptable attack on Catalonia.

If our votes do not count, then our people don't wear that shirt. It's fair.

I think all these players would jump at the opportunity of representing the Catalan NT if it was ever recognized by Fifa and become an official team that can compete internationally, but why wouldn't they want a one in a lifetime chance to play in the WC? Of course they'll play for Spain 'til further notice. However if you want the players to boycott the Spanish NT because of their roots and heritage then that's a different story, now we're talking about the players' consciousness and how sympathetic are they towards the issue.

This is kind of insane what I'm about to post, but everything above has reminded me of it so strongly. :D And yes it's a serious post. In TNA [Wrestling] Matt Morgan is the tag team champion and carries around two belts ... yet most of the time doesn't have a partner. Still in interviews he refers to himself as 'we'. When it comes time to defend his belts he enlists a partner but always at the end Morgan gives him a beating to go on being the sole holder of the belts.

Last time, Morgan asked Jesse Neal if he would be part of his team. It would be an opportunity for Jesse to win gold! Yet he was wary, as he seen how Morgan had treated his former partner Red. In the end he agreed, and they won, and Morgan lost it again... but Red came to his rescue.

DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE?!

I'm 100% sure it won't happen. I mean, for now, it's not even a debate that has come up. In any case, it would be a shock here for sure and the impact in the international level would be huge. It'd be a good way to expose the anti-democratic methods of the Spanish tribunals in several matters, this one, the Franco one...

I'm sure that even an important part of the Spanish society would support them, because what we're living here it's a scandal of huge proportions.

As I said, I'm probably dreaming, but I would like that this debate could appear in the Spanish society. Man, they would get scared now that they think they finally have a chance to fight for a WC.

JA, if it comes to me I'd say "FVCK the world cup, and Spain with it", listen to this story, in Kuwait we had someone insulting us "badows" people like me who their grand fathers came from the desert over 100 years ago or more, and he kept insulting us and saying bad thing about us, still we the parliament stood up to this, some people voted "NO" in favor of the minister in question, which showed weakness and cowered behavior from those who did so, specially those who are from our side.

so I know what it means when Catalans get this bullshit from Castillans and not counting them as equals even after all these years of Catalan, Basques and others from other parts of Spain, been representing Spain in Sport, Sines, Art and other aspect of life and winning Spain medals and trophies and also achieving something into the history books, to come in the end and be written off by a dumb raciest asshole in charge or have some power.

if Puyol, Xavi, Busquets, Valdes ..etc. know about it, and still doesn't do nothing about it just to play in WC then they are coward and I don't give shit about others thoughts, I'd stand next to my people even if it means I don't win a fvcking stupid medal in meaningless competition, when life is bigger than Sport and means more than this..

According to Pep, Xavi might miss the WC but for different reasons.

Speaking after the match, the coach was asked of Xavi’s current condition, and he admitted that the 30-year old has been playing through the pain barrier.

He said, “Xavi has an injury that means he could miss the World Cup. But he is committed and is setting an example to his teammates.

“For this, he is the best midfielder in the history of this club. He says he knows his body and that he wanted to play. Fortunately nothing has happened.”

The player himself commented on the extent of the injury, and remarked that the injury to his calf has curbed his dynamism from the centre of the pitch.

He stated, “I have a tear of around three inches in the top of my thigh. It is okay, I have been getting treatment. But my game is not as explosive.

“Everything is in the mind. I want to give everything in the final three games.”

Xavi, in one of his last interviews, personally expressed his opinion about politics, saying he doesn't care about the status of Catalunya. I'm pretty sure Cesc doesn't give a fig either, because he never looks ebullient when talking about his past in Barca (that's why I kind of doubt that he desires to return) and Puyol is too nice to be involved in a risky protest. I bet Busquets won't even understand what's going on. And Valdes... is simply not important at all.

Pique is the only person who might boycott but we all know it won't happen.

If you want my opinion - I want them to boycott because I hate the Spanish NT.

After WC in Korea (oh and Japan) I've lost any illusions - it's not a competition worth watching. Big money, big bribes and manipulations plus explosion of nationalisms, fcuk it. Stay home and enjoy nice summer in Barcelona :)
Of course I'll watch it because there's no other football at this time.;)

so is Catalunya Jesse Neal or Matt Morgan? :D

awesome post btw, if anybody else but you would've written it (me, for example) it would've surely brought accusations of trolling

Oh, I've been waiting for this thread since a long time now. :D

I do think they should stop representing Spain if their (Catalans and others) rights are trampled down.

One of the reasons I've felt in love with Barça is Catalunya as well. I can't say I want Catalunya's independence unless they (i.e. Catalans) say so, but I will support them on every decision they take.

I would love to see a Catalan NT taking part in international competitions though. I'm pretty sure they would have made it to the WC. And Spain would have had problems since half of the Spanish NT is made up by Catalans.

Visca Catalunya!!!

definitely for the boycott. In this case the country(Spain) practically is not acknowledging catalan autonomy, heritage, and existence. If the catalan players feel the insult towards them and their ancestors then they will quit.

They will however be whistled like crazy come next season and the dumb opportunists will have an additional reason to hate barca. So will the racists in real madrid

Total in agreement with K4 about this and AfroSamurai did a farly decent job of summing up what's going on with the players with the exception of Valdés and Busquets who would most certainly choose Spain because I believe they consider themselves Spanish first.
The Busquets family come from a very poor area called Badia del Vallés, which is almost 100% Spanish speaking.
In fact if you look on Google maps you can see the place is even laid out in the form of Spain with corresonding street names http://jonkepa.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/badia_espanya1.jpg

The thing is that if they did this, they would be in very serious trouble and would turn into hate figures that would make Figo's visit to the Camp Nou in the white shirt look like a picnic.

I love Spain, and I want them to do as best as possible; but if it's the way JA elucidates, and if I was Catalan; I would understand the boycott (even though it would never happen). And I think that most people wouldn't understand this until they are in that situation and are treated in that way. I'm talking as an Iranian who is proud of our best players standing up for themselves and the people of the country and now being banned from the NT.

JA, do you think the seperation of Catalunya is inevitable? (Touchy subject.. I know. )
