I don't get all this criticism against Oleguer. He's not top-class, but he's a decent defender. Besides, if we don't play with him, who do you want? We have what we have and we must live with it.
I agree, see yesterday's game thread.
We never really had world-class international defenders, bar Koeman, the rest was spanish and/or homegrown. I think there are some good reasons for that. There is no guarantee that a foreign defender will have the same top performances in Spain. A good recent example for that is Walter Samuel and I believe it's even harder at Barça. We are an attack-minded team, always have been, that makes it tough for keepers and defenders, tougher than at other teams.
I already said that years ago, I doubt even Nesta (someone who was considered the best defender in the world by a good majority 1-2 years ago, maybe still is) would be a guaranteed success in Barcelona.
Even Helenio Herrera back then had his foreign players up front and his Catalan warriors at the back, it's a good policy and it can work wonders.
Oleguer does a decent job and while I agree that a fighter like Puyol could complement well with a classy central defender (a leader-type, think Blind at Ajax, Baresi at Milan,...), this central defense just won us the league title last year and is doing fine. No way Oleguer deserves the criticism he is constantly getting.
From what I read, I also get the feeling that Oleguer is an important part off the field, a loyal and humble chap, outspoken when it comes to crazy wages and last but not least a politically involved person.
By the way, did Frank already choose his 18men-squad for the game? I couldn't find it anywhere.
