Serie A Week 34 - 15/4/06 (15.00 UK)
Palermo - Roma

Stadio Barbera

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo and Roma will both be hoping to keep their European dreams alive when they meet at the Stadio Renzo Barbera. After working so hard to climb above Fiorentina in the race for Champions League qualification, the capital club will not want to give up their place here while the Sicilians are still hoping for a UEFA Cup spot.

Roma have had a miraculous second half to their season, shooting up the League table into Champions League contention. They currently have a slender one-point lead over the Viola and will be desperate to hold on to that lead and return to Europe’s top club competition. Despite being blighted by injuries the Giallorossi have lost just once in the last four months with Brazilians Rodrigo Taddei and Amantino Mancini excelling in their makeshift striker roles. Mancini recorded his Serie A best with goal number 10 against Lecce while Taddei is the only player to have featured in all 33 of Roma’s matches so far. That is just as well because it is a familiar story for Coach Luciano Spalletti for this game with Francesco Totti, Vincenzo Montella, Shabani Nonda and Edgar Alvarez all injured and ‘keeper Alexander Doni suspended.

Palermo have seen their form improve in recent weeks as they have now gone five matches without a loss for the first time this term. A change of tactics and the introduction of new signings Federico Agliardi and David Di Michele have helped no end in lifting some of the pressure off boss Giuseppe Papadopulo.

Di Michele has scored three goals in their five match run while ‘keeper Agliardi has conceded just twice, a huge improvement on the four goals they had let in during their previous two encounters. The Rosanero, who also met the Giallorossi in the Italian Cup semi-final on Wednesday, have nearly a full squad with only winger Mario Santana unavailable due to his injury.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo: Agliardi; Zaccardo, Barzagli, Terlizzi, Grosso; Tedesco, Corini, Barone; Brienza, Di Michele; Caracciolo

Roma: Curci; Panucci, Mexes, Chivu, Cufre; De Rossi, Aquilani; Rosi, Perrotta, Mancini; Taddei

I believe this one is the most tricky of the remaining games (including Milan in SanSiro). I had this feeling before we played them in Coppa and it’s now stronger after I watched how we struggled against them. And they seem really pumped up and want revenge very bad.

I’m very nervous already.. :stress:

Good news Alvares seems to be ready for this game. But no Nonda

1 CURCI GIANLUCA
2 PANUCCI CHRISTIAN
3 BOVO CESARE
4 KUFFOUR SAMUEL OSEI
5 MEXES PHILIPPE
7 ALVAREZ EDGARD ANTHONY REYES
8 AQUILANI ALBERTO
11 TADDEI FERRANTE RODRIGO
12 MAIORANI FRANCESCO
13 CHIVU CRISTIAN EUGEN
14 KHARJA HOUSSINE
15 DACOURT OLIVIER
16 DE ROSSI DANIELE
17 TOMMASI DAMIANO
20 PERROTTA SIMONE
22 PIPOLO PIETRO
25 CUFRE LEANDRO DAMIAN
28 ROSI ALEANDRO
30 AMANTINO FAIOLI ALESSANDRO (MANCINI)
35 OKAKA CHUKA STEFANO

Who is MAIORANI?

I am not too worried, meaning I am pessimistic as usual, but not overly so. Practically all dangers Palermo created in the cup game were because of Kuffour's mistakes, now with Mexes back the defence should be a lot more stable plus he would take care of the aerial balls Palermo likes to use. Plus Perrotta and Alvarez are back too, that should improve the midfield a lot. On the other hand, Curci in goal currently makes me really nervous.

It will be a tough game and probably decisive for our 4th place campaign. BUt our team has proven very successful in the big games this year, away and at home, hopefully the trend will continue.

Last 9 games, including 6 in Serie A, we hav econceeded at least one goal, which is very strange considerign our excellent defence. I think this must end soon, so I hope it's tomorrow and one goal is enough for us to win.

I think we should be optimistic, they lost 5 times already at home this season, and the way we are playing in Serie A will be too hot for them if we can maintain this form.

Good news for us from the Milan derby - AC MIlan won, so the gap between them and Inter is 5 points and there's a good chance they will secure the second spot before the last day of the season when we visit them.
The bad news is Juve's fall means that Milan could contend with them for first spot by then :irritate:

That would be good--I'd cackle if Mr. Hat walked away with nothin'...then again, it's my own schadenfreude.

Yeah, Milan win is good for us in many ways. The point you mentioned is correct but I won't count on Milan too much to secure the 2nd place 'cause they will probably lose some of the next games. Especially with the important CL games, they will field their B side.

But more importantly, Now the gap between us and Inter can be reduced to only 5 points and with all the troubles they are going through there is some chance we can catch them. Long shot I know but still it's possible especially with Inter.

Plus, This loss means more headache for them which will definitely hurt their confidence before the cup final.

To be honest it woudlnt be nice going into the last day knowing that we need to win for 4th, but also a win would win the title for Juve because of a Milan loss. This would be unbearable however Roma goes first and 4th place is more important. I hope by this time Fiorentina flopped, we already catched 4th and we let Milan win the scudetto over Capello, Emerson and the rest! Our excuse would be resting players for coppa final

Spalletti wants it all Saturday 15 April, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma face a tricky trip to Palermo, but Luciano Spalletti insists they must win all five remaining games to earn a Champions League spot.

“We’ll have to give our very best if we are to finish fourth,” warned the Coach. “There is only one way to ensure that aim, and that is to win all our matches.”

Last week the Giallorossi leapfrogged past Fiorentina into that final European berth, but with only one point separating them and a difficult encounter in Sicily, the situation could change again.

“A great team knows how to deal with even the most difficult environments. We will go to the Stadio Barbera with the intention of scoring goals and taking home an important result. We have to do what we always have done.”

This is a particularly intriguing tie because Roma eliminated Palermo from the Coppa Italia on Wednesday with a controversial 1-0 victory. In response, Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini pledged to make it ‘hell on earth’ for the visiting team.

“I saw a great game played by both sides. I can understand that Palermo were disappointed at going out, but I don’t see what all this tension is about. I’ll have no problem in shaking Zamparini’s hand. After all, he did fire me twice when I was at Venezia in 1999-2000.”

There is revenge of another kind for the Capital club, as Palermo won 2-1 at the Olimpico when they met earlier this season in Serie A.

“Our motivation is locked up in the race for a spot in the Champions League. The rest counts for nothing. Alberto Aquilani, Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta are all fit and ready to go. We’re also confident Cristian Chivu can recover in time.”
