Serie A Week 34 - 15/4/06 (15.00 UK)
Palermo - Roma
Stadio Barbera
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Palermo and Roma will both be hoping to keep their European dreams alive when they meet at the Stadio Renzo Barbera. After working so hard to climb above Fiorentina in the race for Champions League qualification, the capital club will not want to give up their place here while the Sicilians are still hoping for a UEFA Cup spot.
Roma have had a miraculous second half to their season, shooting up the League table into Champions League contention. They currently have a slender one-point lead over the Viola and will be desperate to hold on to that lead and return to Europe’s top club competition. Despite being blighted by injuries the Giallorossi have lost just once in the last four months with Brazilians Rodrigo Taddei and Amantino Mancini excelling in their makeshift striker roles. Mancini recorded his Serie A best with goal number 10 against Lecce while Taddei is the only player to have featured in all 33 of Roma’s matches so far. That is just as well because it is a familiar story for Coach Luciano Spalletti for this game with Francesco Totti, Vincenzo Montella, Shabani Nonda and Edgar Alvarez all injured and ‘keeper Alexander Doni suspended.
Palermo have seen their form improve in recent weeks as they have now gone five matches without a loss for the first time this term. A change of tactics and the introduction of new signings Federico Agliardi and David Di Michele have helped no end in lifting some of the pressure off boss Giuseppe Papadopulo.
Di Michele has scored three goals in their five match run while ‘keeper Agliardi has conceded just twice, a huge improvement on the four goals they had let in during their previous two encounters. The Rosanero, who also met the Giallorossi in the Italian Cup semi-final on Wednesday, have nearly a full squad with only winger Mario Santana unavailable due to his injury.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Palermo: Agliardi; Zaccardo, Barzagli, Terlizzi, Grosso; Tedesco, Corini, Barone; Brienza, Di Michele; Caracciolo
Roma: Curci; Panucci, Mexes, Chivu, Cufre; De Rossi, Aquilani; Rosi, Perrotta, Mancini; Taddei
