Already an all time Croatian great, and he only recently turned 28! His 72 caps for the Vatreni and his guaranteed starter status at Real Madrid are proof of his undeniable talent.

Agree with you that he is really good player, but he's got to keep constant form and there is where he lacks. Lately he's been ok,but let's just remember his countless passing to the back for Real and Croatia and even Tottenham. Let's hold our horses and see how he does towards the end of the season? BTW,your personal feelings you've just described doesn't put him in all great. Poz

lately he's been "ok"?????

Majstor, have you watched him lately?

#6 ·
One more year like this and some good NT results, and I would put him second only to Boban in my book. He's a diferent player than Boban was though, less versatile but a genius in his own way.

Yea he's lacked a bit for us more often than not, but one good tournament for Luka and Croatia. would bring him immortal status.

Please God, let it be Brazil!

samba!!!!! :wee:

He needs to win a legit trophy (not counting HNL titles) and lead Croatia to one semi-decent run in a major tournament imo to be the best Croatian player ever

Boban won multiple Serie A titles when the league was probably the best in the world and a Champions League title. Also of course he was on the 96 and 98 teams, which other than 08 was the only time Croatia got out of their group

I don't care what he wins for club, I want him good for the NT so that we can win something or take some scalps. Call me selfish :D

He has played great for club this year, he has been ok for us in the qualifiers. However in my opinion he can not be cosidered as good or even better than a Boban or Robi until he does something GREAT, which they both did by taking us to 3rd place in 98, that is probably the greatest accomplishment for Croatia in our sporting history, that team those men were great!

You forgot he got Ozil relegated...

Modric and Ozil never occupied the same position for Real Madrid. They would often play together.

#15 ·
And this talk Modric is at all better than Boban is bogus.

Luka's not in Robi's or Suker's or even in Boka's or Boban's league, we were that good back then, but Luka is a legend, but as majstor said needs to put up more...

maybe he needs to perform more consistently for the NT, but he's right now Real Madrid's best player alongside Ronaldo ofcourse, probably even better than him atm. I do agree though that in order for him to be considered one of our best midfielders he needs to win some trophies and take Croatia further. And with the form he's in maybe this is the year.

It's no coincidence that he's playing great this year as he has a great coach leading his team...Ancelotti! Mourinho is a destructive defense first coach, and that style didn't sit well with Modric. Now that he has a real offensive minded coach, he as well as Real are playing tremendously. For Croatia we've had average and sub-par coaches directing things since Ciro left. Bilic was ok, and obviously Luka played his best in the first qualifiers under him and in that Euro. I think Kovac will get the best out of Modric we've ever seen in the sacred checkered jersey:musik:

Subasic is in sublime form, but there's only one Stipe :proud:

#24 ·
I disagree, Stipe's been more than solid. Why on earth would Kovač drop him ?

Anyone who thinks Luka isn't in the same league as Boban, Prosinečki etc. is simply overrating the older generation...I think Gasparov said Boban and Robi took us to third place...but Robi was dropped and spent the most important part of the tournament on the bench...do you think Luka wouldn't have had a spot in that France '98 starting XI?

Trophies aren't the best indicator of worth...of course, being at a club that's winning big trophies is recognition in itself because clubs like that aren't going to sign you and keep you around if you're not performing at an elite level...but in theory Luka could have won multiple trophies last season when his form was down and won nothing at Spurs after years of excellent form, or he could even end up with nothing this season when he's finally established himself. And then there's the question of how much credit does one player deserve for his club winning a trophy?

I like to look at this way, after Boban there is no other former or current Croatian NT midfielder I'd rather have in my XI than Luka Modrić.

Sorry you're wrong.

There's more to Prosinecki, for one example, than France 98.

Luka is a great player, but his form isn't anywhere as good as what Boban and Suker and co. showed for well over a decade. Let's allow Luka to play a full career before we put him next to the Golden Bhoys.

Luka has been accused of phoning-it-in on for the national team and any objective analysis of the Repka performances would say it's true on occasion.

context...

I'm saying he's been accused of being a club player...

A thread posted out of emotion over some great current form. Great nothing wrong with that, but to equate it with legends who've accomplished more, just hold on a second.

Let's allow him to finish his career and then let's give a proper analysis, let's not jump the gun, especially when mentioning such great players from the past.

I didn't create the thread over his recent form, I have been a huge fan of his for nearly 10 years now and he is certainly deserving of his own thread here on XtraTime for links and chit chat about him. That's why I created it, having nothing to do with his recent form

Modrić is one of the best midfielders in todays game, and he has been a regular starter for every club he has played for so far in his career, including RM.

Boban was and is a Croatian football legend, a true gentleman, and even though I don't like to compare the two because they are a different type of midfieldes, I rate Luka Modrić higher in terms of versitility.
Having said that I rate Boban higher in terms of leadership and NT achievements.

Luka still has a few years to go but he is definately one of the best in his position in the world, and a player would have on any Croatian team I can field!
