What are the greatest all time club seasons by a defender? In general it is very hard for a defender to break into to top tier of voting for major awards (European/South American POTY etc), but it has happened a handful of times. We can start with these seasons, but I am unsure if they are really the best, as sometimes the voting for these awards can be poor.
2005/06 - Fabio Cannavaro: Balon d'Or winner, Serie A winner with Juventus (later revoked). This award is usually attributed solely to the world cup, but I doubt he would have gotten the award if he was not at least very good for Juve. How good was this club season?
2002/03 - Paolo Maldini: Balon d'Or 3rd place, Champions League and Coppa Italia winner with AC Milan. I have heard mixed reports about how good Maldini actually was this season. Some have said the votes he received were a lifetime achievement acknowledgment while others say he deserved to be considered a top 3 player in Europe. Some say Nesta was better this season.
2001/02 - Roberto Carlos: Balon d'Or 2nd place, Champions League winner with Real Madrid. Also not sure about the greatness of this season, seems to be kind of a nod to winning the two biggest trophies in the world (World Cup and Champions League) in one year. In my opinion 2002 Roberto Carlos was not nearly as good as 1998 Roberto Carlos, but if you disagree and think this is an all time great season let your voice be heard.
1996/97 - Roberto Carlos: FIFA WPOTY 2nd, La Liga winner Real Madrid. He was excellent for Madrid at this time but I am assuming this was related more two his performances for Brazil in the Copa America and Confederations Cup where he hit that ridiculous free kick.
1995/96 - Matthias Sammer: Balon d'Or winner, Bundesliga winner. Winning the Balon d'Or was attributed mostly to leading Germany to the European Championship. I know he was excellent for Dortmund as well during this time. Is this an all time great club season?
1994/1995 - Paolo Maldini: FIFA WPOTY 2nd, Did not win any silverware, although I don't doubt this is a great year. Was it one of the all time great years though? I don't think it was better than the preceding year. Possibly more a product of a weak POTY field?
1994 - Cafu: South American Footballer of the Year, Sao Paulo. Won the award despite the club not achieving as much as the two previous years when Sao Paulo won the Libertadores. Is this an all time great club season?
1993/94 - Paolo Maldini: Balon d'Or 3rd, Serie A winner and Champions League winner. Undoubtedly considered one of the all time great club seasons by a defender, many have argued that he would have been a worthy winner.
1991 - Oscar Ruggeri: South American Footballer of the Year, Vélez Sársfield. Always assumed this was related to the Copa America as he did not win anything with the club, let me know if this is incorrect.
1988/89 - Franco Baresi: Balon d'Or 2nd, European Cup winner. Another of the club seasons looked upon as one of the greatest ever. Was it better than 89/90 or were the two equally great despite differences in the voting?
1978/79 - Ruud Krol: Balon d'Or 3rd Place, Domertic Double winner with Ajax. I don't know much about this season, although I do know Krol was one of the top sweepers in the world at the time. Was this a case of left over good feelings from his 78 world cup performance?
1974, 1975, 1976 - ElĂas Figueroa: Three time South American Footballer of the Year. Was always very impressed by this achievement and would have to assume that these were among the best club season all time for a defender. This was at the time when club football in South American was at the worst equivalent and likely superior to its European counterpart. He was also beating out all time great players who played high profile positions like Zico and Rivelino and winning everything in Brazil in 75 and 76. Where any of these seasons better than the others?
1971/72, 1973/74, 1974/75, 1775/76 - Franz Beckenbauer: Balon d'Or winner, 2nd, 2nd, winner respectively with Bayern Munich. Almost all of these season have achievements from national and club team factoring into them. Which of these were all time great club season? Are his best club seasons even among these?
1969/70 - Bobby Moore: Balon d'Or 2nd. I have always assumed that this was related to his world cup performance as opposed to his club as West Ham had no major achievements that season. Am I incorrect and should this be considered an all time great club season?
1964/65 - Giacinto Facchetti: Balon d'Or 2nd, Serie A and European Cup winner with Inter Milan. Although I do not know much about this season everything lines up for it to be an all time great club season. No international achievements influenced voting, all time great player with big club achievement this season. Was this season better than the following in which Facchetti almost repeated the European double (lost out in EC semis and won Serie A) and had an absurd goalscoring record for a fullback with 12 goals that season?
1961/62 - Karl-Heinz Schnellinger: Balon d'Or 3rd, Bundesliga winner. This voting is often attributed to his World Cup performance but he did deliver the Bundesliga title as well. Is this an all time great club season?
1956/57 - Billy Wright: Balon d'Or 2nd. Very unsure about this season, did not have a successful club season trophy wise, whereas he delivered the English 1st Division title the following two seasons. Was there some type of international performance that influenced the vote? Was it just a case of him being the lucky one to have a few measly votes trickle down down him after Di Stefano's all time great season?
Many of the best seasons probably did not get recognized in major award voting, off the top of my head here are some other all time great seasons (more recent ones I have knowledge of).
Danny Alves 2010/2011 and Maicon 2009/2010, tow of the greatest offensive performances by fullbacks ever.
Lillian Thurman 1998/1999 - Led Parma to the UEFA cup and Copa Italia, dominated ESM team of the year voting.
Roberto Carlos 1997/1998 - Basically swept the ESM team of the year voting.
Maldini and Baresi 1991/1992 - Undefeated Serie A season.
Baresi 1989/90 - often considered equal to or better than the previously mention 88/89.
Bergomi 1988/89 - Dominated Serie A when it was at its peak and only allowed 16 goals all season.
Koeman 1987/88 - Led his team to the treble scoring a ridiculous 26 goals in all competitions.
There are a lot of all time great defenders that did not get mentioned: Scirea, Passarella, Nesta, etc. Did they just not have a great all time season (just lots of really really good ones) or did they have some seasons that could be considered as the greatest club season by a defender and they just never got recognized.
For my two cents I would say that the top tier of all time great seasons are:
Maldini 93/94, Baresi 89/90, Figueroa 76, Beckenbauer 73/74 and 75/76.
What are your opinions on the seasons I listed, seasons I left out and your picks for the best ever?
