you rank cruyff the 8th best player in wc history..this has nothing to do only with formation...

mĂĽller had a fantastic wc 1970 and germanys only defeat 1970 was extremly unlucky (in a game mĂĽller did score 2 goals)...germanys victory against holland 1970 wasnt undeserved..in a game mĂĽller did score the gamewinner...i olso remember you gerd mĂĽller was denid a second goal in this final too. (he was 2 meters onside , not offside)..its not mĂĽllers fault the offiziells did a bad job...this finally has cost him currently the wc alltime topscorer crown and good possible was the reason he wasnt selected (in year 2000)in the top 11 formation 1974...

videofootage of mĂĽllers wrongfully reacalled goal wc final 1974 in minute 59...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg424IWrOfs

its funny enough a quick rulechange 2002 and the fifa credit ronaldo 1 owngoal in his records, so this affect negative mĂĽllers alltime position twice..

mĂĽller in 2 wc combinated has the best castrol ranking of all players with 2 wc since 1966..and the denid goal 1974 is the reason he isnt higher ranked 1974...

9.86 (1th 1970)
9.70 (5th 1974)

of all players in wc history gerd mĂĽller has scored the most goals outside of his continent (10), + 3 assists..he directly has contributed for 77% of his teams goals 1970 (maradona is praised for his 71% 1986)..he has scored in 4 of his 6 games the gamewinners,he has assistet the 1:0 gamewinner against uruquay too...he put his team against italy in front 2:1 with 22 minutes to go, beckenbauer playing with his arm in sling, the biggest reason germany did loose in overtime..germany was denid 2 penaltys in regulare time (fouls against beckenbauer (first half) and seeler (second half)..germany has played 120 minutes against england (italy 90 minutes against a weaker mexiko team)..germany has played 4 games in the heat of leon and was forced to travel in the colder but thin air of mexiko city to play italy..italy has played his games in thin air prior.. so no climatic change dificults for italy....

1974 , after a slow start in the first round (1 goal), mĂĽller has scored 1 goal against yugoslavia,1 goal him was recalled for offside, same game, mĂĽller protestet the decision, but there is no videofootage of his position in a moment the ball has left sepp maiers foot..
mĂĽller directly has contributed for 3 goals against sweden..germany won 4:2..1 assist,1 created penalty, 1 overath goal scored from a mĂĽller rebound..
1:0 game winner against poland

2 goals against holland, 1 of this 2 goals wrongfully recalled...

and this player isnt worth to be selected in a top 10....??isnt 1970 very often called the best wc ever where many famous players have played??...didnt he scored the gamewinners against excellent teams of poland (3th)and netherland (2th)1974??

((((in addition:... müller in his 6 wc 1970 qualification games has scored goals in all 6 games , he contiuned his streak in mexiko with goals against, marocco, bulgaria(hattrick),peru(hattrick),england and italy (11 games)..only in his last game against uruquay he came short, but assistet the 1:0 gamewinner(a game germany didnt play with beckenbauer, schulz, sepp maier and löhr, schnellinger left the field injured in the second half too))..however perfect 12 game point streak wcq/wc 1970..))))

With all due respect to the player's club career, what's Maldini doing in that 1st 11? Seriously, what has he done in World Cups to justify that inclusion? Even Paul Breitner would be a better choice.

Maldini was selected in all star team twice and is one of the most appearances in World Cup. Nilton Santos won two champions but he was selected in all star team just once. To be fair, I think Maldini is more derserved.

Brehme in place of Maldini.

A very good idea of a thread.

Dearman, you forgot on Sepp Maier.

I always loved Dino Zoff for his great positional goalkeeping style and calmness and confidence he oozed but we all know it´s saves we all expect from keepers, not the secondary psychological effects. Dino was unfortunately already on decline in the early 80s, press speculated about his near-sightedness since he got caught several times on long-range shots (Argentina 1982, Czechoslovakia & Romania 1983 f.e.). In 1982 Italy team, Dino Zoff was more passenger than the one who carried the team. In 7 games let in weak goals in 2 or 3 games from what I remember, but luckily Italy was always able to recover. From top of my head I remember goals he let in vs Brazil (Falcao) and Argentina (Passarella) as a goalkeeping disasters.

If I could choose goalkeeper I´d definitely pick Maier. Or someone who carried his team deep into tournament, doesn´t have to be world champ (Cruyff wasn´t either) f.e. Planicka (1934 & 1938), Schrojf (1962), Goycoechea (1990), Schumacher twice (1982 & 1986), Kahn (2002 & 2006). Dino Zoff shall be always remembered as world champ but barely a world cup hero who single-handedly carried his team to World Cup glory.

Btw if not the silly foul of Toni Schumacher on Battiston, Schumacher would be voted as best keeper of ´82 World Cup. As a certified villain who lost all sympathies they couldn´t award him so they gave it to Zoff. N´Kono caught an eyes either.

Don´t get me wrong, I love Dino Zoff, and was happy for him to see him lift the Cup, but don´t let yourself fooled about how good he was at that time. Rossi & Co. won it for him. If Italy didn´t advance out of 2nd Leg, he would be remembered as the one who sunk the ship.

Zoff was elected into ´82 all-star team because everyone knew he´s going to retire soon and it´s his last World Cup appearance. In his case it was nostalgic decision, more reputation award than award based on true performance. Schumacher who had fantastic tournament made it easier because of his idiotic challenge on Battiston. Nobody really complained when the spot in all-star XI was given to Zoff because everyone hated Schumacher (and German team in generally after their cynical walking contest vs Austria also called non-attack pact, that sent poor Algerians home.) Who else: N´Kono ? If unbeaten Cameroon make nice deep run in this Tournament, he would get consideration. Pfaff was impressive in Group phase but not-so-impressive in 2nd Round. USSR´s Dassayew was excellent (3 clean sheets in 5 games) but USSR failed to get into semis (not his fault). Ettori, Mlynarczyk were reliable keepers not embosomed with hype of Dino the silent giant with heart of a children who takes this tournie as his last farewell. Half of the Planet wanted to see Italy win because of Dino Zoff.

Zoff managed to keep only 2 clean sheets out of 7 games in 1982, while Maier had 4 clean sheets in ´74. In the finals, Germany was dominated by Netherlands and Maier was instrumental in his team´s victory while Zoff was barely tested in finals.

W.Germany ´74 were outplayed by E.Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia and Netherlands but still managed to win 3 of these 4 games. Amount of clean sheets indicates why. Germany´s ´74 team won despite looking tired and being unimpressive, what we can´t say about Italy ´82 team, team that managed to find wonderfull chemistry after weird Group phase.

@ Longevity : Stan Matthews was world class at age of 25 as well as 45 yo. We can´t say the same about Zoff. Nobody is disputing his leadership abilities, but from goalkeeping pow, he was unimpressive in his last years to say it mildly. He rarely left goal line, went down too early, struggled to estimate ball´s trajectory on long range shots due to rumoured problems with his eyes. Not blaming him for that, but putting him into the goal was silly. He sunk down Italy´s hopes for qualifying to Euro 1984 tournament vs Romania and Czechoslovakia. Whether Bearzot had extremly soft spot for him, or Italy were short of competent goalkeepers, Zoff certainly isn´t the best example of longevity. It was sad to see veteran keeper getting embarassed by soft goals that would be walk in the park for him yet few years back.

Certainly, in WC'82, i was impressed for N'kono, the best keeper on rate, but unlucky to get 2nd round.

Schumacher & Dasaev, also had great tournament. Kajoo, actually explain why any of them, were named for All-Star team.

Behind them, i would named Pfaff & Koncilia as keepers who had a good tournament.

Keepers with a decent tournament: Zoff, Mlynarczyk, Ettori, etc.

Ettori? France had some regrets after 82 tournament for 35-36 years old GK Bertrand-Demanes was not selected.

yeah, not bad at all but he looked like he was not concerned by goals concedeed. He gave impression to be not a competitor. His interventions were not slicy imo. He was too "middle" in a very good team.
hum, no i feel sorry for I can't find positive points (but many negatives points) on his tournament, actually he was more bad than he was good.

To select all star team, personal acheivement (all-star selection) is very important. think it is more important than number of trophies in which are won by level of team and defender is a position not influence the team to win trophy very much like attacker.

FIFA World Cup All-Star Brief to Best XI

As some tournament selected all star team as squad all more than eleven players, I'd like to brief all of those to be best XI.

1982 tournament : 12 players are selected, Socrates should be out because Falcao and Platini were already there.

1986 Tournament : It is actually eleven player for selection but this is one of the two tournaments, defenders were selected just three so think it should be fair to name another defender. I select Oscar Ruggeri in and leave Felix Magath out.

1990 Tournament : The same as the 1986 tournament, I add Guido Buchwald and name Roger Milla off.

The 1994 Tournament : There are 11 players of selection (Not include GK). I'd name Thomas Brolin out.

The 1998 Tournament : There are 16 players of selection. Chilavert, Gamarra, Brothers Laudrup and Dunga out.

The 2002 Tournament : Recber, Alpay, Reyna, Yoo Sang Chul, Hansan Sas are considered out of bext XI.

The 2006 Tournament : 23 players are selected. This is best XI of the tournament : Buffon, Lahm, Zambrotta, Nesta, Cannavaro, Ballack, Pirlo, Zidane, Totti, Klose, Crespo

Di Stefano in a World Cup squad? He never even played in a world cup and Don Elias Figueroa over Baresi? Elias Figueroa's Chile never even progressed beyond the groups so he really wouldn't be in the team.

Just a slight hint for how I would stop Maradona

Just give him a little sack of coke on the sideline..... he would go wild! :)
