The 2014 World Cup opening match could be considered the best opener by far as FIFA Rankings are concerned as #3 Brasil takes on #18 Croatia (combined ranking of 21, average is 10.5). Since the current FIFA Ranking system was introduced (in 1999) other openers have featured France vs Senegal (#1 vs #42, combined 43, avg 21.5) in 2002, Germany vs Costa Rica (#19 vs #26, combo 45, avg 22.5) in 2006 and South Africa vs Mexico (#83 vs #17, combo 100, avg 50) in 2010.

Looking back before the current ranking system was in place, we could subjectively try to find an opener with 2 teams of such quality. In 1990, reigning champions Diego Maradona & Argentina took on Cameroon during the African team's glorious run of form to the Quarter Finals that year... but I think 2014's opener is still a better match. 1982's opener pitted Argentina vs Belgium and 1974 had Brazil vs Yugoslavia and those may rival this year's opener. As you can see, this year's opener ranks as one of the very best of all time, and certainly the best in a long time!

The opening match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil sees the hosts go up against a capable Croatia side who will be looking to rise to the occasion as the world watches. Brazil are the favourites to win the tournament while Croatia will be looking to beat off competition from Mexico and Cameroon in Group A to progress to the knockout stages.

The pressure on Brazil to win the tournament will be huge, weighing down on them the whole competition, but if there is anything to take away from the Confederations Cup it is they can handle it, and handle it with style. For once Brazil’s attack may be outshone in their own country, but not by another teams attack, but their own opposite end. In last year’s Confederations Cup, Brazil managed to score fourteen goals in five matches, but their defence rivalled their star-studded attack by conceding only three goals in five matches. The rock-solid backline featured Barcelona’s Dani Alves, Paris Saint Germain new boy David Luiz, Paris Saint Germain captain Thiago Silva and Real Madrid’s Marcelo. Never has a Brazil defence shown as much chemistry as they did. Playing in front of its own fans The Samba Boys are sure to play free-flowing, attacking football throughout this game. The squad led by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has won 13 of its last 14 matches at the time of writing including that 3-0 win over Spain in the Confed final and should carry that confidence into this match. Scolari has put together a squad that mixes talent and competitiveness which also features 16 players who were in the Confederations Cup last year. Oscar and Hulk are two major threats going forward while Fred will lead the line but the brightest star for the Brazil national team is Neymar. Although having a roller coaster of a debut season at Barcelona, Neymar can redeem himself as the most promising talent in the world by putting on a show in Brazil. The number 10 for the Samba Boys already has impressive international statistics, with 30 goals in 47 appearances in the famous yellow and green. It is no secret Neymar is key to Scolari‘s team, as his pace, flair, trickery and finishing for Brazil has put him in a class of his above the rest of his fellow attackers. At the Confederations Cup last year, Neymar ran multiple defences ragged.

Croatia coach Niko Kovac named his 23-man squad for the World Cup led by experienced stars including Luka Modric of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich striker Mario Manduzkic. However, one disadvantage the Croats will have in their opening game against the hosts is the absence of Mandzukic who will be serving a one match ban after receiving a red card against Iceland in the play-offs. Modric has mastered the playmaker role and inserted himself as a key figure of the Real Madrid midfield and will be relied upon to bring that form to this tournament for Croatia to stand any chance of winning it. Another player to watch will be Sevilla star Ivan Rakitic. Rakitic was probably the best La Liga player this past season if you don’t include players in the ranks of Real, Atletico Madrid or Barcelona, having led his team to Europa League glory. The midfielder is technically sound, versatile, creative in possession and regularly tracks back to help out defensively. Croatia will look to him to supplement the goal threat of Mario Mandzukic. With Mandzukic out Croatia shouldn’t stress too much as they have \ options to lead their line. Ivica Olic, together with Ivan Perisic, could not stop scoring for Wolfsburg and almost led the team to fourth place in the Bundesliga. The same thing can also be said about Eduardo for Shakhtar, playing a key role at the end of their campaign. Defensively they have Southampton top performer Dejan Lovren amongst their ranks and he will be up to the task of stopping the likes of Neymar and Hulk. The “Fiery Ones” competed closely with Belgium throughout Group A of the UEFA qualifiers before struggling at the finish line. The team finished second in the group and had to do battle with Iceland to qualify.

The last time these teams met was in their first match of the 2006 World Cup with the Brazilians getting maximum points with a 1-0 win. This is a Brazil team that comfortably bypassed the likes of Italy and Spain to capture the 2013 Confederations Cup title and should come out of their first match with all three points.

ahhh shit the thread is here. How would you guys rank this match as a public spectacle compared to our others?

I'd rank our biggest matches as:
1. Semi final against France
2. QF against Germany (wc 98)
3. This match
4. 3rd place match v Holland 98
And after this, our quarter final matches in the Euros (Germany 96, Turkey 08) with an honorable mention to our matches against Italy in '02 and the qualifier at Wembley against England.

I'm predicting a score draw  looking at these matches above we either get the result or put up a very good fight.

If we can snag a draw without Mandzo, avoid injuries and any cards, will be estatic.

Brazil should pummel Mexico and Cameroon, so a draw would be great. We then take care of business the other two games...

Then beat those wooden shoe, tulip growing wa.nks from Holland in 2nd round. And then onto the quarters...

I totally agree Ante!!!

It would be a really good option for the second round!!

Top 5 Matches to Watch in the World Cup

http://futnsoccer.com/2014/06/05/top-5-matches-watch-world-cup/

World Cups are all about storylines and this summer’s tournament is certainly not short on them. While the true drama takes place during the knockout rounds, the group stage definitely has its fair share of enticing matchups. Luckily for us, some of the best matches in the group stage are fairly early on, meaning that we’ll get an immediate dose of spectacular World Cup action.

1. Brazil v. Croatia (June 12th, 4PM EST)

The opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is always going to be a must-watch, if for nothing other than the pomp and pageantry that surrounds the opening ceremonies. Come June 12th, the Arena de São Paolo will be the center of the footballing universe. On top of the sentiment of being the first game, this match has serious consequences for both sides.

Brazil will be looking to begin their World Cup campaign on a strong note, and with massive pressure already on their shoulders, a slip up against Croatia would be disastrous. The hosts will be lining up for their first World Cup match on home soil since 1950. They’ll be heavy favorites for this match, but the weight of expectation may prove to be too great – especially since only a handful of their squad has previous World Cup experience.

Croatia, while not expected to get a result, will be desperate to pull off an upset. With striker Mario Mandžukić suspended for this match, the Croatians will consider anything but a loss a successful outcome. His replacement may be Brazilian-born forward Eduardo Da Silva, who became a naturalized Croatian in 2002.

While many have viewed Group A as a cakewalk for the hosts, the three other teams – Croatia, Mexico, and Cameroon – will be competing for second place. Those three squads are fairly even-matched, so a result against the hosts will go a long way for Croatia in their search to escape the group.

Prediction: The hosts, backed by incredible support, will rise to the occasion and Mandžukić’s absence will prove costly. Brazil 3 – Croatia 1

I had a dream Croatia won 3-2 with only 10 men for most of the game. Ahmad Sharbini scored the winner in the 102nd minute after Brazil took 10 minutes to celebrate their late equaliser.

Accidentally hit scoreless draw.

On a serious note, I see a 2-2 happening. Some loose balls here and there. Goals for Croatia probably from Modric corner kicks. Goals from Brazil from joga bonita direct play.

If that is the lineup that's "projected" to happen by both sides, I'd say both sides picked some fine lineups. Kovacic I think (I hope) will shine, would be the best time now to show off his best football.

Damn, I just watched a replay of the Brazil - Spain 3-0 Confederations Cup Final from last year. When the real show actually starts, that Brazil crowd and the real Brazil will be very tough for us. I'll be happy if we put on a good performance against the hosts in this opening match, regardless of the result. Anything else would be a bonus. Don't get me wrong, I still think getting a result is not out of the question. It'll be tough though (and fun to watch, hopefully).

maybe SN is stretching some of Suker's words, but it seems like Suker is demanding that Kovac gets this team into the knockout stages. If they don't I wonder if he will do something irrational like he did with Jelicic at the U20 tournament a few years back

It's a Zidak article so I take it with a grain of salt :D

Brazil-Croatia
3-4 or
4-5

It'll be a barn burner much like the Tourney opener in Deutschland. I think we have the pedigree, especially in the middle. I know we'll play our football and do great things with it.

I think this would be good for this game

------------------Pletikosa--------------------
Srna-------Corluka----Lovren------Vrsaljko
------------Modric----Brozovic--------
Perisic----------Rakitic---------Kovacic
------------------Olic-------------------

I say give brozovic a go. Im hearing Schildenfeld is injured now?

#36 ·
I think we have the goods to punish a Brazil playing like crap. unlike the Serbs ;)

#32 ·
I heard some blabbles on Schildenfeld but apparently he should be good to go.

I certainly wouldn't mind that lineup karate kid, but i do fear how Brozovic will handle such a game of pressure and magnitude.

There's certainly alot of options in terms of versatility out there in our midfield:

I got the feels that its going to be this:

Modric Rakitic

Perisic Kovacic Olic

I'd much rather have Rebic start on the wing and put Olic at the CF position or have Kova on the wing and Rakitic as the AM.

With this generation of players, anything less than the getting out of the group is failure

I think the lineup CK posted before is the lineup we will see except Rakitic will play alongside either Brozovic/Vukojevic and Modric will play further upfield. It's clear from Rakitic's position vs Australia and the games vs Iceland that he will play as one of the 2 in the double pivot and not as the 10. I think Kovac will try to get Rakitic to drop deep and split the 2 centrebacks in order for Croatia to retain possession a little better and try to calm the game and the crowd.

Vrsaljko is a lock now. I'll also take Lovren over Schildenfeld anyday of the week. I will be extremely disappointed if Lovren does not start, he is our best and most complete CB. Frankly, Schildenfeld over Lovren is a little insulting. Lovren is faster, stronger, better at commanding his penalty area and in duels and technically on another planet. He is also our biggest weapon from set pieces.

No Jelavic from the start either please. In these games upfront against Thiago Silva and David Luiz, you need lungs and clever movement to try and retain the ball and relive some pressure. Olic is our man for this job. Jelavic's role should be limited to a sub if we need to chase a goal.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the friendlies either side just played. I also doubt Brazil will play with the same intensity they did vs Spain. They are here to play 7 games and won't press us like it's a final. You cannot play games every 4-5 days consistently at that intensity without dropping off. Their objective will be to win without expending too much energy.
