Cem, another book for your list is Lords of the Horizons by Jason Goodwin (ISBN 0-09-999400-3) IT's also about the history of the Ottoman Empire.

Still no pictures though :(

:D

I've pretty much read every book on the Ottoman Empire written in English and I must say Lords of the Horizons is by far the worst one. lol

I give it 3 thumbs down.

must be a bestseller then. :D (the german title I mean)

I read "Nachtzug nach Lissabon " by swiss author Paul Mercier at the moment. Didn´t know the author, but the title sounded interesting to me that´s why I bought it.

Crazy story : It´s about a teacher from Bern, who teaches latin and other languages. A failed marriage, no children, in the middle ages. One day a portugese women crosses his way....and he´s totally fascinated alone by the way she speaks out a portugese word. On this morning later he - just giving a lesson at school - suddenly packs his bags and goes home!

On the way home someone gives him a novel written by a portugese author. He doesn´t speak the language... and spontaneously decides to learn it. No big effort for him, he´s a genious for languages. And when he sits down in his house, listening to an LP with the language course another mad idea comes into his mind: to follow the steps of this author. An author he did not know, an author who´s dead since some more years.... The next day he catches the train to Lisbon.

I´m not through with this, but it´s a fantastic story.

It's a pain to read but it is a very deep work. Michael Henchard as a modern tragic hero makes for a good analysis
