In Braga an old expression states that ancient things are "older than the Cathedral of Braga." And makes sense. The city's cathedral was consecrated in Portuguese 11 century.

A 366 km north of Lisbon and 58km from OPorto, Braga, created by the Romans 2,027 years ago and today with 176 thousand inhabitants, is one of crowns of the architectural jewels in Portugal.

Capital of the Portuguese Minho region, it has its history closely linked to Iberian Catholicism. With all the avant-garde and anachronisms possible.

There is an incredible concentration of churches, chapels and convents richly decorated in an area that in the beginning of the 19th century fit only 30 inhabitants. And there is the sweet charm of medieval or Renaissance of the narrow streets, with names of sweet evocations: street of Lightning, Alcaide street, street of Souls or Chaos.

Nowadays it is easy to get to Braga City trough modern highways (they were only 196 km were in the country just a few years ago, today there are more then 2000 km).

In the same way as Spain, sets of residential neighborhoods grow in the peripheral areas of the city, built with subsidized interest rates, reflecting a real estate boom only interrupted by the current international financial crisis.

Founded by the Romans under the name of "Bracara Augusta", the city was Christianize in the 6th century and slowly became, as capital of the former Galicia ( all the area north of Lisbon), the only Iberian archdiocese. Still nowadays, the Braga Archbishop has the right to appoint himself, without false modesty, as the "primate of Spain".

The temporal power was exercised for centuries by the Catholic hierarchy. What attracted orders for the installation of religious seminaries and convents. And yet attracted artisans now for the production of crucifixes, images of saints, breviary, hagiography and even church bells to carillons of European churches.

The Bishop's Palace, of the 15 century, is larger and more impressive that the City Council which concentrates the political authority.

The most important of the churches is precisely the Cathedral of Braga's, consecrated by bishop D.Pedro (1070-1093) over ruins of earlier invasions and religiousness - from the Suevi, Visigoth and Muslims.

The church, which led to the saying ( "that is older that the Braga Cathedral"), is now unrecognizable by changes added, especially in the Portuguese Renaissance, also called the Manueline because of Portuguese king d. Manuel, cog-named in is time as "The Venturi".

Braga ... those of you who did not "lived it" ... do not understand you!
============

As any land/city in our planet, we all have those and that which accompanies us throughout life. In this particular case throughout our formation, growth, personal, physical and aging.

And of course, in addition to those who accompanied our knowledge. There are the "what's" that also create and build our personalities and ways of being. And of course, the city of Braga
also have their "what's" who helped the young of Braga to become adults and form their way of being and life style.

Obviously these «that's» and «what's» are 'idols' ... "Heroes" ... 'Super-men "and women who left something in our imagination that we're not sure what or why but that have built and continually build... and someone for whom we have affections, feelings, desires to know whether from the press or personally.
Obviously, the «what's» I speak are politicians, musicians, writers, actors, sportsmen, trade unionists, etc. and the «that's» ... some more than other public figures ... but that is our «what's» and «that's»...

As is obvious, and that due to the constant "nuclear bombing" given by televisions, radios and all the organs of mass media, national and international, all of us have for many of the foundations of our growth as persons figures that there are the more public in the face of the earth, as Barrak Obama, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Sting, etc. and this ... Our president of the Portuguese Republic Cavaco Silva, fadistas Marisa, Amalia Rodrigues, football players Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani, Eusébio, Paulo Futre, Rui Barros, etc. etc. etc. ...

Of course each of these figures branded, are still branding or will brand future generations ... Feeding youth personalities who grow in there bowels, social, and basic, and mental health, and even when in adult or elderly person.

And then there are the local heroes ... that also sometimes go to nationals «heroes» ... and/or global ... as Braga has had and always has and always will continue to have ... That feed the generations that born and/or grow in their guts and blossom to life and give life to those who come after them.

At the time of our grandparents there were the "cantadores ao desafio"(«singers to the challenge» in a free translation) so typical of the tradition and sing and Minho and Braga (of which I leave you here for a current example of these videos unfortunate lacking of bygone days footage):

sRwh-E4bQhI

the time of our fathers beyond the "national" to Zeca Afonso ... Amalia Rodrigues ... a very bad time for the country in terms of music ... due to the dictatorship of Antonio Salazar ... as far as there was no money in people's pockets ... no prospects of life and personal and professional growth for the vast majority ... resulted from the war overseas that marred, and unfortunately clouded the future to many and their families ... as the easy access to instruments or other ways of making music ... but it was at that stage that the "ranchos populares" appeared in force all over the Minho region and around Portugal ... unfortunately can not find anything that time of Braga ... but are bands like "Os Vaticanos" and other such equivalents regional/local music that "lived" in Braga and the Minho in that time, then here's a video of "Os Vaticanos" for you to have an idea: W8jvZjhZBFM

since then these newer generations of the age range of 20 ... 30 ... 30 and such ... 40-something ... Braga has already a wider range due to the start of this country's openness to the outside ... output of the dictatorship ... entry into the EEC (now European Union) ... and began to picture cards in the Braga city musical scene ... emerging collections/albums/vinyl with bands only from Braga .. like the mythical "à sombra de Deus..." from 1988 ...

among many other bands that I myself do not know or I do not remember ... of various musical styles and quadrant style's ... from pop to metal ... from rock to hip-hop ... through the classical music to the song lyric ... There were also at that time that the clubs/discos scene emerged in Portugal ... and in Braga and they were many... and few resist today ... from what time I remember: Club84, Trignometria, and that still existing Sardinha Biba, Insolito Bar...

Now the generations of teenager of Braga from today have another range of "local" musical selection as never seen before...
