UEFA Cup: Lens - Porto

UEFA Cup Preview: Lens-Porto
Lens - Porto | Latest News | News Archive

12/11/2002. BACKGROUND

French outfit Racing Club de Lens are going into their UEFA Cup 2nd leg without too much hope of making it to the next round.

In fact the heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of FC Porto is a cross to bear for all Lens players. Last year's Championnat runners-up are downbeat about their chances to stage a fantastic comeback and snatch qualification for the next round.

"I don't see how we could beat FC Porto 4-0", France forward Daniel Moreira told the media. "If only we could win this one it would lift morale a great deal. Now it's up to us to beat them and get out of the European stage with our heads high".

However coach Joël Muller has asked his men to go and get a decent result "for the fans", who are staying loyal to their faves despite a chaotic run of late.

Lens even suffered the humiliation to be kicked out of the French League Cup by puny neighbours Beauvais. A reaction is a must for Lens to stop the rot and stage a comeback in Le Championnat.

FC Porto, on the other hand, are topping the Portuguese top division and see this trip to chilly Northern France as a pleasant distraction from home affairs.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Manager Joël Muller almost has a full squad to choose his team from. Only four players will missing (Rool, Birmingham-bound Coly, Warmuz & Bouba Diop), whereas Sibierski, Blanchard, Zoumana Camara and Diagne-Faye are all back from injury.

It is still uncertain if Porto will rest key players for the match. If not, Deco and also Derlei or Nuno Valente should be available from selection after shaking off light injuries.

That's not the proper attitude Big Baboon!

That line of thinking will have you spending your prime years settling for hummers from the first hoochie that is willing to flash you her cooter.

A eye towards what you really want, and a refuse to lose attitude, will make you and your mule more productive and happier for it.
Hmm.. UEFA Cup or nothing for a coupla years....?

I'm not saying don't be proud, but put your pride in perspective.

And yes, I wouldn't mind if Benfica turned down future UEFA Cup invitations. But the chances of a Portuguese club turning down money are none.

Seriously, when the hell is this "tournament" going to be put out to pasture. What diminished value this tournament once had is now killed by the Uber-Champions League. Every couple of years, the teams in the UEFA Cup or Cup Winner's Cup could claim that the competition was tougher than the Euro Cup.

But now that the power leagues get so many spots in the Champions League, I view the UEFA Cup along the lines of the college basketball National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The two tournaments invite teams that could not get admittance into a bigger, more prestigous tournament.

If you guys want to believe that you are carrying the Portuguese flag back into glory, feel free. But nobody cares about the NIT or the UEFA Cup; so until a Portuguese team returns to the knock stage of the Champions League, no one outside of Portugal will care about what are teams are doing.
You're absolutely right, the UEFA is not a prestigious trophy to win, but the point was that Porto and Boavista have chalked up so many points, you can finish in 4th and still qualify for Europe.. Althought from thoe sounds of it you wouldn't wanna bother with the UEFA Cup anyway...

And if we do win it, I for one will be proud of it.

Attention Benfica and Sporting fans.

Don't worry..!!

Now that Porto and Boavista have piled on the points in European competition, you guys can still finish as low as 4th and still qualify for the UEFA Cup!! Good luck, i'll be cheering you guys on in Europe! (Just don't embarass me by getting beat 7-0...)
Embarassing is beating teams that nobody has ever heard of and claiming to be a european power house.

Yeah I'll be cheering them on too ;) Come on Benfica!! Boost our UEFA points! Your only losing 5-0 to Halmstad in the 1st Round but maybe an away goal will give Portugal an extra 0.01 ranking point! :D
Now, now Dan, play nice or they'll start to think you're me. Or do thay think that I'm you?!

Dude, you're not making any sense. What you've quoted is not proof that i denied any regionalism in my post. But i forgive ya seeing as you're pretty hot cos of having to deal with F1 in the other thread. The amount of time you keep harping on about him, people would think you only come on here to **** on his posts.

Bit of a waste when you can usually give some decent opinions on futebol.
Oh, geez, KM - c'mon! You ain't dealing with F1 here. I thought you were a straigth shooter. Too bad! Now ya just like any other Portista troll now, playing dumb rather than face the music. F1 and you guys have a lot in common.

Whatta disapointment.

I don't MAKE HIM waste his talents. He wastes them of his own free will. It's kinda sad that a 30 year old feels the need to waste his time with a kid he doesnt know, more than his own son. If I'm like that when I'm 30 I'd rather be dead.

But back to the topic. Congrats to Porto(god someone kill me for sayin that!), and Boavista(Although PSG did deserve to go through just as much).

There are serious inferiority complexes from Portistas, who can not refrain from bringing regionalism into a sports argument, ever.

Dude! Get over it. Portugal is Portugal, though we'd probably be better off without Portistas.

Err in case you hadn't noticed, i was answering a question from someone else about regionalism and supporters.....!! If you don't agree, how bout putting accross your own opinions instead of slaggin' everyone elses..?! After all isn't that the point of a forum...?!
Not exactly an admission, is it?

Should I start calling you F1 junior?

A fan isn't measured by how many titles his favorite has, or how many cups they have, a fan is measured by how loyal they are, not how many cups and titles their team has. If you're rooting for a team because they're the best, you're rooting for the wrong reason.

My "teams from the North" comment was to do with UEFA points. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. The Northern teams have picked up more UEFA points than the Southern teams have in the last 5-10 years.

What now?
