Werder Bremen vs Real Madrid

Werder Bremen must beat leaders Real Madrid CF at the Weserstadion on Matchday 5 or face likely elimination from the UCL. That is the equation for Thomas Schaaf and his side after they suffered a third defeat in the competition at Lazio on 6 November – a result that left them two points adrift at the bottom of the section.

Madrid, by contrast, sit three points clear of Lazio and Olympiacos, and with that pair meeting in Rome, we know victory in Germany will secure our passage to the last 16 as group winners.

Cannavaro is a doubt for this match with a bruised calf, but Heinze should return. Otherwise we're at full-strength.

We should play a good counter-attacking game and reserve out stamina for the second. If we play a patient game with good passing, we should get all 3 points.

I don't understand why Gago is deeper than Diarra. Is it meant for Diarra to break up attacks further up field and 'shield' Gago's deep passing game? It doesn't seem to work, and it ends up being Diarra having to make quick one touch passes out wide to Robinho. I hate it, it's not working for us.

since schuster made gago start as a DM ....diarra's performances were average or below .... remember how was diarra before gago was introduced to the starting XI

Schuster has no other option but to switch their positions

GKs: Iker Casillas, Jerzy Dudek, Jordi Codina
DFs: Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Cannavaro, Marcelo, Christoph Metzelder, Miguel Torres
MFs: Mahamadou Diarra, Fernando Gago, Jose Maria Gutierrez, Arjen Robben, Gonzalo Higuain, Robinho, Julio Baptista
FWs: Javier Saviola, Ruud van Nistelrooy, RaĂşl Gonzalez

Sneijder and Heinze have not recovered from their injuries. Soldado and Drenthe have minor medical treatments(excuse for not being called up). Salgado and Balboa left off due to manager's decision.

Who drops from the starting line-up then? Not Raul or Ruud, the two CL beasts. Not Robinho, our energetic force. Not Guti, our creative engine who's going to be suspended for a couple of weeks anyhow and should play while he can. Not Diarra or Gago, at least not for Robben in an away match.

Diego is suspended, so we can afford to play with only one DM. Bench one from Diarra or Gago and start Robben. Less than 30 days before we go to the Nou Camp in a match that will decide who heads into the Winter break as leaders. Robben in top shape can tear Barcelona to shreds on the counter, give him as many minutes as possible to recover his best form.

Mo,

I think we should send our most unfied unit and look for a patient win, we can't take too many risks. If we win, great, we can rest alot of starters for final game (depending if we secured first or not). But we can't risk too much because a draw gives us a chance to get first place by a win at home in match day 6.

Weder have to open up, so no need to risk too much and end up losing, which complicates our position to qualify.

I expect Shuster to start the same team on Wednesday

I see where you are coming from, don't forget Diego is suspended though. Without his services they lose the heartbeat of the team and a considerable contribution. I think we should exploit this. Go 4-4-2 with only one DM and take the game to them. Their full-backs will be forced to stay back with Robben and Robinho on either flank providing instant danger, so we'll only need to cut off their supply through the middle.

The explanation for Soldado and Drenthe's absences is that they have the "flu" and require "rest." :howler:

Heinze has a bruised right knee, and Sneijder has a pulled left ligament on his right knee as well.

Salgado and Balboa are listed as "technical decisions" in missing the squad.

Hi, Madridistas  !
I don´t think Robben will be a starter this game. I see him coming on the pitch sometime in second half.
Diego is a huge loss for them.
Anyway, I would be happy with a point (of course I hope we will bring back home three).
And one more thing - I´ve noticed that you talked about our chances for finnishing first - I think 3 points from home game against Lazio are enough, but that doesn´t mean we can relax on Wednesday.

First off, welcome to XtraTime! Feel free to introduce yourself in La Familia Social Thread at the top of our board. Nice to have you here.

I agree with you that Robben won't start. The Gago-Diarra tandem cannot be touched. Guti is suspended for the league so there's no point in resting him here, he should and will get 90 minutes. Raul and RvN are goal machines in the CL so they'll play, and Robinho's been our best player for almost two months now.

I also agree that first place can be reached with a home win over Lazio, but we saw the way we handled(or failed to handle) Pandev last time. He will likely cause us problems again(make that Cannavaro problems again), so getting a result here would make things alot easier.

From Guti:

"I am a regular in the team, I have the confidence of the coach, the club and the fans.

"Personally, it was one of my best times and I promise that something like that will not happen again."

-----------------------------------------------------------

He said he wont do it again, i believe him. Its true that he was getting tackled alot though.

I just read in Marca that he might be suspended for two games as on his way out he was mouthing off to the fourth official, who then made sure the referee had it down in his report. now they will look into it and see whether he deserves another game away from the pitch.

excellent

He won't get an additional game for mouthing off. That never happens.
well players have been sent off in the past for this, so maybe referee rules in la liga (not that i want to understand them) stipulate extra suspension for players insulting officials.

as Che would say, a word to the wise, it was from Marca...

with Villar? You never know!

seriously, these kind of sending offs (kicking without ball) usually get 2 game suspensions. The only reason they didnt right away decide this is tryin to save face, since when a certain R10 got sent off against Getafe last year, they said he was provoked, so they brought it down to one game

now they need to find some other excuse on why Guti gets two games...you have to admit, they find creative ways to bend the rules!
