UEFA Champions League: Tue 1st Apr, Stadio Olimpico

Time to put in a great away performance at a great stadium in the CL, we've got the players to score goals and we've got a marvellous defence to keep things tight at the back. 1-2 United, Rooney and Ronaldo. Enough of being cautious, why can we not just use Rooney and Tevez upfront in these sort of games?

They both work hard as hell and help out the midfield and even so, Carrick and Scholes when they're in the sort of form they currently are in can dominate any midfield, even the very strong Roma.

Naive? Maybe, but we'd certainly score as we create far more chances that way and i'd prefer to lose out that way instead of the usual dour shite we've been subjected to recently in the CL.

I'm quite optimistic about our chances if we play our own game, if we go down the 4-5-1 cautious route then I see a Roma win as it would play right into their hands.

United Hit With Four Injuries Ahead Of Roma Clash :wallbang: :frustrat: :scream:

Manchester United were hit with a few injury worries during this evening's 4-0 win over Aston Villa, with Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand all pulling up with hamstring trouble...

United were absolutely electric infront of a packed Old Trafford as they put a slightly lacklustre Aston Villa side to the sword.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with an audacious back-heel, before a delightful passing move saw Carlos Tevez head home the second.

After the break, Wayne Rooney - who had not scored at Old Trafford since October 27 and had missed a couple of chances already on the night - did well to keep his head, round the keeper and slot him the third. Soon after, another slick move was finished by the ex-Everton man, who was denied his hattrick moments later for being a yard offside.

During that successful second half, Sir Alex Ferguson made a triple substitution, making some changes which, at the time, seemed somewhat curious.

Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney - players sure to feature in Rome and prime for a little rest - were not substituted, while Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra came off instead, the latter two in particular not being usual candidates for substitutions.

Sir Alex explained after the game that they had all picked up minor hamstring strains, caused most probably by the heaviness of the pitch due to the downpour in Manchester which was consistent throughout the game.

They, along with Ryan Giggs and first choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, will be doubts for the Red Devils' crucial quarterfinal first leg clash against Roma at Stadio Olimpico this week.

"I had to make the changes because of injuries," explained Sir Alex.

"Carrick, Rio and Patrice Evra all had injuries and then Giggs got injured towards the end. With the rain continually coming down, the pitch was starting to prove very heavy and that can be a problem with hamstrings. Hopefully they'll be all right (for Rome).

"Edwin van der Sar may be a doubt for Tuesday.

"He’s got a groin problem again, it’s happened two or three times in the last few weeks. We'll see how he is over the next few days. Not risking him today gives us a better chance."

United kick-off against Roma on Tuesday night at 19:45 GMT (20:45 CET).

I am always hesitant to believe whatever goal.com has to say, but this is of real concern. Giggs is the only player who I would say we could afford to lose. Carrick is key for these games, as his range of passing can unlock any defence. Evra is simply one of the best left-backs in the world and Rio is captain of England :D

However, I did watch Roma's game last night against a terrible Cagliari side and I truly believe that we can win this one. Even if we play with just Rooney up front, Anderson, Ronaldo and Nani bursting through from midfield should be too much for the Roma defence to handle. I hope Tevez does play though, he is a man for the big games. I also hope that VDS is back, because as well as Kuszc..... has been playing, VDS is still our number one.
I'm going for 1-2 to United. Mancini with their goal and Nani and Rooney for United.
Although I would be more than happy to take a 'tight and boring 1-1' and murder them again at OT :D

Yes but as Vidic15 says, he is still Totti. The potential is still there to win the game single-handedly. Whereas if we lose a player like Rooney we can play Tevez without too much worry, I don't know if Roma can replace him. They have Vucinic who is decent, but it is not the same. Great news for us, but still disappointing nonetheless whenever a quality player like Totti misses out on such a big game.

Totti isn't the player that is running things this season, just head to the Roma forum for a you can readily taste disappointment targetted towards Totti if you study lots of the past match threads. Anyway lets concentrate and worry about our players no theirs.

I'm pretty sure that Ferdinand, Carrick and Evra are only suffering from slight niggles, the problem with Giggs could be more severe because of his age but we have more than adequate cover.

We don't desperately need to win this, hopefully we'll get a scoring draw, they aren't going to be confident coming to Old Trafford under this situation.

I see, Totti out with a 'thigh strain'. I dont blame him for bottling it against us. Trying to get past Ferdinand and Vidic is enough for anyone to get a 'thigh strain'.

Roma fans got their excuses out already. Bless.:dielaugh:

you guys are naive.

saying Totti does feck all may be true, I don't think it is but that's like saying Ronaldo doesn't perform in big games.

He's still one of your best players....he might not do well say against a Chelsea, but you want him to play because he's class. Same goes for Totti, there is like no player in the world who can pass the ball the way he does. He's an enormous blow, even if he doesn't perform he means a hell of a lot to that team.

At Old Trafford this season when we lost 1-0 Totti was cleasrly one of the best players on the pitch... we outplayed you then aswell... hopefully we can do something similar, but with more pressure, we might not have the bottle.

Outplayed us my arse.

Agree on Totti though, as I said, he hasn't really been at his best of late from what i've been reading in your forum but he's still a world class player who can change a game at any given moment. It's fantastic news for United's chances that he misses the 1st leg and possibly the 2nd.

Can you also confirm whether Juan is out? He's in the squad isn't he?

That'd be another huge blow.

Edwin van der Sar looks set to return to the Manchester United side in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie away to Roma.

Dutch goalkeeper van der Sar was on the flight to Italy on Monday morning after missing Saturday evening's 4-0 Premier League victory against Aston Villa at Old Trafford with a groin injury.

Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs all travelled after coming off with knocks at the weekend.

Mikael Silvestre was a surprise addition to the party after recovering from a knee ligament injury, sustained in September.

However Nani was again missing and ruled out of the Stadio Olimpico clash because of a thigh strain.
