i want the proof. don't forget that deschamps is a world champion and a european champion.
It's just an inside joke. Fird said Cambiasso won more than Xabi Alonso :D

Deschamps trophies meant more - bigger teams, bigger competitions, stronger era ;)

No one's gonna remember Cambiasso's multiple Supercoppa Italiana titles and various Greek Superleague championships when all is said and done.
:proud:

Yes, even if you set aside Xabi Alonso's sublime playmaking skills and ability to control a game through his ball distribution from deep, he was a solid 'holding' man. He possessed the infamous talent of slowing down and breaking down his opponent's attacks (whether through holding onto his opponent or his excellent positioning). Moreover, he certainly showcased sharper interceptions than the likes of van Hanegem, Pirlo, Scholes and FalcĂŁo.

I hated Deschamps for some reason but in hindsight any team would want a guy like him.

It's true they were older but both Davids and Vieira were first team players for Barça and Juventus respectively prior to joining. If not for Cambiasso, both would have continued to be first team choices.

Is CR no longer a first team player after being outshone by someone better? Exactly, my dude.
Davids was moody and inconsistent throughout his career and a liability in a place like Inter at the time. And selling Vieira was a smart move already by Wenger, he had peaked, and I remember being against Inter buying the player later.

Eusebio was unstoppable at the 66 world cup, that was until he came up against Norbert Stiles in the world cup semi-final.

They came up against each other again in the 68 European cup final, and Stiles came out on top again.

My list:

Matthaus
Rijkaard
Boszik
Ocwirk
Gerrard
Xabi Alonso
Redondo
Obdulio Varela
Coluna
Neeskens

(did not used old wing backs, like Luiz Andrade and Duncan Edwards).
Probably Bozsik and Coluna are not well categorized as defensive midfielders. Both tended more to be offensive midfielders despite their influence on the defensive aspect as hard-working players.

There is also box-to-box midfielders that despite being very balanced, I think they shone so much on the offensive that don't fit as well defined as defensive (but mixed) as Matthäus, Ocwirk, Gerrard and Neeskens.

Hard to go against Celades
