Totti unsure of future Monday 10 July, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Totti says he’ll look into the eyes of his little son and then decide whether to play on or bring his Azzurri career to an end.

The Roma star has admitted over the last month that he was “90 per cent sure” that he would bring his international career to an end after the World Cup and he admits he’s now assessing his options.

“I need to speak with my wife and see my child’s face,” stated the No 10 after lifting the World Cup last night.

“There are too many training retreats and too many sacrifices that are needed, I want to spend more time with my family.”

Totti insists his decision will be purely based on personal issues and nothing to do with whether Marcello Lippi remains as Coach.

“It doesn’t depend on whether Lippi continues,” he added. “But for now, I just want to make the most of this moment. I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”

I hope he quits. I almost felt like a brother of his during this WC. Fearing that he would miss a penalty, get a red card or simply not be able to perform good enough after the injury. I could not stand to see him go through that kind of pain again. I'm so glad he got the gold medal. He deserved it.

Daje capitano! Sei grande! :proud:

Notte!

Leave while they're still cheering Totti. Seeing all you contributed this year, nobody will lose much sleep.
What do you mean by no one will lose much sleep? Is that an insult? The man broke his ankle, came back sooner than anyone expected, scored the winning penalty in the 94th minute against Australia, had 4 assists...all with 8 screws and a metal plate in his ankle. If I am overreacting and misinterpreting what you said, I apologize in advance.

Regardless, Italia was at its best with a less than 100% Totti on the pitch, and he is now a World Champion. I hope he comes back for Euro 2008, but I think he'll make his international retirement. Expect to see a Capello driven Cassano wearing the #10 for Euro 2008 and beyond.

Grazie per tutti Francesco, grande Campione!

While we only saw flashes of brilliance from him, we must understand and judge his Cup in the context of this injury. He needs more time to be the Totti we know and love.

In spite of this, he is a true champion for coming back from his injury so soon and contributing to the Italian side. We must not forget this, and we must certainly not underestimate the psychological effect that his comeback had on this Azzurri squad. I have to believe it was good to know that old number 10 was around.

I want to see how a fully fit, calm and matured Totti would do in a big tournament so I hope he continues until Euro 2008.

Four assists, one goal.

Not bad for someone playing with steel pins in his ankle and not even given a chance to step foot onto the field for this tournament two months ago.

You're an absolute ****ing ******.

Well I'll guess he will make the right decision by him although he has being influential.

He will be 33 in 4 years? There might be some better off players then and I think the future looks bright in that department even if he dosen't play. Could be more benefical blooding new talent in this situation but I guess the door is open now if he continues.

Like most, I think the Euro 2008 he should be there. Obviously he has had a mixed time in the European Championships, with the great performances of 2000 and what happened in 2004. He should try to conquer it after going so near and so far.

Considering the circumstances Totti did rather well in thsi World Cup. He can do better when fully fit and if Totti can be fully fit in 2 years he would be valuable for Italy. I wouldnt mind Totti going out haveing won the World Cup, however seeing as our only options if he leaves are the explosive Cassano, inconsistent Miccoli and rather unknown for now Tavano, Totti may well be needed still.

I hope picks up his level, he is true class and it was sad to see Totti so screwed from his injury
If his level is the same as in this World Cup, I wouldn't mind seeing even the likes of Fiore instead

It was 4 assists accoring to sources on sky sports who are pretty reliable! Also th most of the tournament. Totti wasnt a world beater, but he was also named int he squad of the tournament and as I said top assist player. All of that with no pre-tournament matches for 3 months (ok 2 sub appearances and 1 and half friendly) and also with metal in his ankle. If you compare Totti to every number 10 in this tournament. He was by no means inferior to any.

Fifa obviously changed their mind on one as I am sure every think I read had Totti at 4 previously. Anyway 1 assist does not matter. In a tournament where the midfields were hard to break because of the traffic and congestion in them, Totti managed to give his best without any form of fitness up until the final where he was just spent.

Impact... his sub appearance v Australia where he made a huge impact. Sure Totti didnt get fouled for the panlty but you forget his delicious pass to Grosso which led to it. Germany game he was very good for 70 minutes until he got tired. Ghana game he was very good.

Zidane had arguably 2 good games in the 2nd round and QF. Zidane came into this tournament with no injuries. Zidane came into this tournament with the knowledge it was his farewell tournament with not so much pressure because people didnt think he would perform. Zidane go himself sent off in a crucial moment of this tournament. Zidane still sucked in the group stage and still sucked against Portugal while against Italy Zidane did 2 things all game. Score a penalty he did not win :D and head the ball straight at Buffon. Oh thurdly, get a red card.

I cant really say Zidane led France on his shoulders because that would be lying to benefit an opinion when it simply was not true.

I won't bother arguing with CdM about Totti because it's obviously pointless, but I have to ask him: did you actually see the Spain -France game? To say that Zidane carried the team on his shoulders in that one is plain ridiculous, Vieira was miles better, Makelele too.

Saying Zidane carried France on his shoulders is totally playing down the roles played of the defence and of Vieira and Makalele who were huge in allowing France to dominate certain games and certainyl were the reason why Zidane was able to even touch the ball in the first place.

I will say that Totti was not inferior to Zidane this tournament. I think Zidane got toally over-rated this tournament because he like Totti was quite average for their standards. However in Totti's case it was completely understandable as he had no competitive football for 3-4 months before the tournamet started. If I am correct Totti got injured on February 12. Italy's first match was June 12. Totto returned to training in early May, but wasnt even ready for that return, he just needed to get fit for the WC.

The impact was similar so yes.

Lippi played Totti every game he possibly could for a reason.

I will end my debate there. The only game Totti was rather crap was the final. Against the Czechs he could have done better however he didnt do so bad. These are 2 games he could have done more, the rest he played solid games we expect of him.

Now another question: Which player do you think can take over from Totti seeing as you so badly want to see him leave. Remember we need 2 as DP will more or less be gone also because in the end DP was alot worse than Totti.
