Previous encounters this season have seen Sporting prevail, how will Rui Vitoria approach this match to make sure Benfica come out on top? Benfica now lie only a single point behind their city rivals, while Porto will be hoping for a draw, such a result coupled with a win for them would draw them right back into the title hunt.

Rui V has the team playing really well. His only Kryptonite has been the inability to get a win against any of the direct rivals. The 2nd game vs Porto - despite the loss - was demonstrably different from the first. Benfica were better and should have won. It'll be interesting to see how this one goes.

pretty much.,.....

the game is very important although not yet decisive for either team

ideally we should win it, in order to make sure we stay ahead of both sporting and porto

so the game will take place at sportings stadium, at 20.45h GMT and these are the players called:

For Benfica, Rui Vitória:

Goalies: Júlio César , Ederson

Defenders: Lindelof, Eliseu, Sílvio, Jardel, André Almeida , Nélson Semedo

Midfielders: Fejsa, Samaris, Gaitán, Salvio, Gonçalo Guedes, Pizzi, Talisca, Carcela , Renato Sanches

Forwards: Raúl Jimenez, Jonas , Mitroglou

For Sporting, Jorge Jesus:

Goalies: Rui Patrício , Azbe Jug

Defenders: Marvin, Jefferson, Ewerton, Coates, Naldo, João Pereira , Schelotto

Midfielders: William Carvalho, Aquilani, João Mário, Adrien Silva , Bruno César

Forwards: Slimani, Teo Gutiérrez, Barcos, Bryan Ruiz, Carlos Mané , Gelson Martins

Right result for this half is a draw but I guess SLB fans don't mind what could or should be... :)

Sporting players desperate for penalties

#14 ·
Benfica are quite lucky tonight if i'm being honest

#17 ·
Benfica win the derby and surpass Sporting with 1 shot on target. Incredible misses by sporting, ruiz choked badly.

and we won yessss:D ahahah soo good

no we didnt have a brilliant or inspired game, but this time the strategy fit...scored and held on to the result

unlike with the game with porto a few weeks ago, where we missed so many chances and were by far the dominant team ( and lost the game) this time we were super efficient , scored in our opportunity, locked the castle, frustrated sporting and were lukcy that sporting missed a couple opportunities

we are ahead now and its up to us to keep it that way

long way to go still, 9 games ahead, and each one of thme will be a final like our coach said, thats the spirit, so far we have managed to counter all the criticism thats been put on the team, both players and mainly coach, and are now alone in the top

on a side note, sporting's coach after match press conference....wow, talk about "unfair" play...sad sad display, even by his standards

BENFICA! :proud:

ps. well done jeff:D

I had multiple heart attacks within the last half hour.
Sporting delievered sooo many great crosses into the box and neither Eliseu nor Almeida seemed to be able to prevent them from doing so.
On the good side: Lindelof is improving with every game in my book.
Is there any timetable for Lisandro's comeback yet?

A big thumbs up to the players who learned from the unnecessary loss against Porto. Now on to St. Petersburg!

Wow....what a game.

From constant media attacks to the silence in Alvalade, the team proved that they took that to heart and Talisca and Samaris made sure to give some back to the green fans.
Props to Rui Vitoria who keeps his humble speech and not much to say about jj who was lucky to get out of Dragao and Alvalade with points last year but decided to bash our performance this year so he could justft making 5x more than Rui V.

This game wasn't a make or break for us because porto and sporting seem to have trouble with small teams, I think they'll lose a lot more points from now on.

Viva Benfica Car*lho!!!!

After the match, JJ proclaimed that Sporting were the better and stronger team. He also noted the immense support the home crowd gave them. It goes without saying that he gave them a tactical edge.

When you bake all of that together, doesn't that make yesterday a massive cake of failure? How can you buffoon away all of those clear advantages?

Devastating blow on the lagartos. You can't find one anywhere these last few days.

Far from being over and we could have easily lost that game. As I predicted at the beginning of the year, JJ is not the answer. The money they spent on him would have been better spent on another goal scorer.
Still, plenty of soccer yet to play but I pretty proud of how this team has improved throughout the year. Credit to our coach.
