Should DP retire or not?

Alessandro Del Piero reveals Juventus have “confirmed they want to continue the professional relationship.”

There were many doubts over whether the 36-year-old captain would be offered a contract renewal at the end of this season.

“President Andrea Agnelli and I met a few times since the start of the year,” read a statement on the club website.

“In these meetings, the club confirmed they want to continue the professional relationship made up of respect and faith that has characterised all my years in the Bianconeri jersey.

“I am therefore confident regarding the outcome of the planned meeting.”

It suggests that Del Piero will put pen to paper on a new contract within the next few days, although it remains to be seen whether it will be a ‘pay as you play’ deal.

‘Pinturicchio’ joined Juve as an 18-year-old in 1993 and has shattered club records for appearances and goals.

I don't think that pretending a bandiera to behave as such means insulting. Del Piero and Totti can't be forced to retire but they can't pretend to be treated as if they were the champions they used to be either.
As regards Del Piero there is a justification: he has been the same since 1998 so he is likely wondering why the supporters moan about him just now.

There are a few things:

1) At 37, most players would not even have that question in mind. They would simply retire, enjoy few years out of football, and then do something football-related. Del Piero can easily be on our board of directors.

2) Alas, it's a shame that DP is insistent to continue. The argument is that he wants to play at the new stadium. Alright, that the argument is not completely irrational. But the problem with that is Del Piero's salary demand. I read somewhere that he wants somewhere around 3m a year, which is mind numbing and outrageous at the same time.

That being said, I still feel like Del Piero should play at the new stadium, which can easily be accomplished by a farewell game this summer. Otherwise, I am afraid he will be nothing more than a parasite sucking out a lot of money that can be spent on a more promising player at this point.

This kind of thing bothers me a bit. Why should he be on the board just because he has been a player? Unless all he's going to do is close to having no influence and being paid peanuts then it's basically harmless, but then what's the point? Otherwise, we should have people in management who know what they're doing, as if don't have enough problems already over this.

After next season. I want to go to a game in the new stadium and of course I want to see the man himself live.

Reduced salary and to play when he is needed now and then. Play next season in our stadio defenitely.

Martin, board thing is more like PR/symbolism, add respectability outwards (our past legend Boniperti was in the board and later as President for quite a while). Prolly wouldnt have much of responsbility unless proven himself.

Either he accepts a 1.5million salary or gets paid as he plays or takes up a director's role...I'm fine with any of these. Just no 3m contract, and he's going to play in the new stadium regardless. The very 1st game in the new stadium, a friendly in the summer in his honor would be very honorable. He playing another season in the new stadium being a reason for him to sign for another year is a retarded one.

Second fiddle defenitely, retiring, its coming up, but shouldnt now. IMO the problem isnt that he isint retiting (only problem I see directly related to him is he should have lower salary), the problem is we dont have good enough options to make us bench him enough, and play only occasionally when needed.

Our strike force is too useless and been so far too long, that we been forced to play him more then necessarily needed. Thats why we needed and need top quality signing to our strike force.

i voted yes. he is a legend and all but at that age, it can down hill very fast as it already is and i truly believe as long as he is in the team, the club will never truly replace him properly with a long term solution.

We didnt go for cassano, we have missed out on other top class forwards during the winter the break as well. The club needs a new symbol...in the past we have sold the likes of zidane and replaced him with nedved, we sold baggio and replaced him with del piero...we are not new to selling or losing great players and replacing them with quality. Yes we had moggi but still, i think it is possible.

A lot of other factors come into it. will DN be there next season? what will the tactics be. To we need to replace DP with another support striker or will we just need a super star striker and a winger to play off him?

If the club can find the right player to take over DP, and unfortunately quags got injured and would be risky to take him on now, i dont see why not.

another name would be buffon...we really can offload a lot of wages there and bring in players like Benzema for example and offer good wages.

If Matri keeps up this form, he may be worth buying outright as well.

After spending some 4.5m euros for the "loan fee" of Quagliarella and only a "mere" 10.5m more separating us from an outright purchase, I can't see us not buying him. That is, if the whole arrangement isn't just a formality and said loan fee was always just a down payment of sorts to begin with. Whether or not we can negotiate the sum down a little due to his injury is all up in the air, although it wouldn't surprise me. Napoli's attack quite full at the moment, I think.

Matri, on the other hand, unless he really lights it up until the end of the season, I can't see as being bought. 15.5m is high and we have all those other buyout situations to take into consideration.

I think 10.5m is still a lot for a player nearing 30 who has just had a serious knee injury. Quags was playing great for us and we are suffering without him, so you are right, we'll end up paying the fee. But i would rather see that maoney put toward a fee to help secure a player like Benzema or even Cavani from Napoli.

I suppose the reality is that we need a striker and a support striker...that will be hard to find.

Quag is not a great player, he is a decent one. Lets not exaggerate things. I dont mind us keeping him, but despite his good first half of the season, he isnt a special must have player. In fact we should hopefully insist on another season of loan due to his serious injury.

TBH Quags fit to our system/lineup like a glove. I honestly think we wouldnt have hit that bad form if he hadnt got injured. His been good. And in many ways he is a special player. I dont think he is wc either, but we cant be picky if we dont make CL for next season.

you guys are making quags sound like he's a second coming of baggio. he's decent. if he looked better, that's because of the mediocrity [of other strikers] surrounding him.

Meanwhile: http://football-italia.net/feb07a.html

"Juventus' offer is said to be that of a one-year rolling contract worth around €2m plus bonuses.

The Bianconeri feel Del Piero deserves to be kept on the club's books after making 34 appearances already this season and scoring seven goals."

The only this is not absolutely retarded is if Del Piero's market value is still 1m+/yr.

Correction: 1 million or more than his would've been replacement's
