Roberto Carlos claims Chelsea are ready to swoop

MADRID, May 17 (Reuters) - Real Madrid full back Roberto Carlos has said English champions Chelsea are interested in signing him.

"Nothing has been confirmed but I have been told Chelsea want me," the Brazilian told Spanish sports daily Marca on Wednesday.

"I have told them they have to speak to Real Madrid, that the club is having a presidential election, and that I have a contract.

"I don't know what will happen in the election and I need to know if the new president and new coach will want me. It would be painful to leave Real after so many years."

The 33-year-old Brazil international joined Real from Inter Milan in 1996, and has one year left to run on his contract.

He has been a fixture on the left side of defence for Real and has won three European Cups and three league titles. Spanish media have been speculating over his future throughout the season.

As part of a possible deal, media reports are linking Chelsea left back Asier del Horno with a move in the opposite direction.

Spain international Del Horno, who moved to Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao last June for $14.50 million, told Marca: "I don't know anything about such a deal you would have to ask Chelsea.

"It is an honour that a club like Real would be interested in signing me. They are a great club and all of us would like to play there."

Real finished second in the Primera Liga behind champions Barcelona, and will have an election for a new president on July 2.

We had Desailly, Deschamps, baldy, Zola, Gullit, Laudrup, Casiraghi, all soon-to-retire.
But of course, RC ain't a defender, rather a joker who sometimes acedentally ends up in keeper's box.

Roberto Carlos: Real Madrid must match Chelsea offer
tribalfootball.com - May 19, 2006

Real Madrid wing-back Roberto Carlos is ready to join Chelsea.

The Brazilian has told Real that they must match Chelsea's mega offer if they want to keep him. At 33, it's unlikely Real directors will accept Roberto Carlos' demands.

The Brazilian ace told AS: "In London I have an offer of two years with the option of another one and a very important financial number. I want to play at a good level.

"If Madrid equals the offer, I remain, I know this clearly. But I know that football in the Premiership is very competitive and is a good level
