01/29/2001. River Plate on Monday approved the sale of their gifted 21-year-old Argentine international midfielder Pablo Aimar to Valencia for a total fee of $15 million after taxes.
The operation was given the green light by a vote fo 14 to seven during an emergency meeting of the Buenos Aires club’s board of directors, according to sources at River.
Aimar wil shortly travel to Valencia accompanied by River president David Pintado in order to arrange the final details of the move.
River Plate had already rejected two separate offers from Valencia, but on Friday they renewed negotiations with the Spanish club at Aimar’s request, as the player desperately wanted the deal to go through.
The player’s transfer to Valencia was opposed by certain River directors who felt that the club should accept nothing less than $25 million after taxes for his services.
But Aimar’s desire to link up with his compatriots Roberto Ayala, Kily González, and Mauricio Pellegrino at Valencia ultimately led Pintado to renew negotiations with the Spanish club.
Aimar began his footballing career with hometown club Estudiantes de RĂo Cuarto before moving to River in 1990 and making his first-team debut in 1996 at the tender age of 16.
Over the past two years he has become the team’s indisputable playmaker, leading River to the 1999 Apertura and 2000 Clausura championships.
In his 84 total matches for River, Aimar has scored 22 goals, mostly from free-kicks, which are a specialty of his.
