01/29/2001. River Plate on Monday approved the sale of their gifted 21-year-old Argentine international midfielder Pablo Aimar to Valencia for a total fee of $15 million after taxes.

The operation was given the green light by a vote fo 14 to seven during an emergency meeting of the Buenos Aires club’s board of directors, according to sources at River.

Aimar wil shortly travel to Valencia accompanied by River president David Pintado in order to arrange the final details of the move.

River Plate had already rejected two separate offers from Valencia, but on Friday they renewed negotiations with the Spanish club at Aimar’s request, as the player desperately wanted the deal to go through.

The player’s transfer to Valencia was opposed by certain River directors who felt that the club should accept nothing less than $25 million after taxes for his services.

But Aimar’s desire to link up with his compatriots Roberto Ayala, Kily González, and Mauricio Pellegrino at Valencia ultimately led Pintado to renew negotiations with the Spanish club.

Aimar began his footballing career with hometown club Estudiantes de RĂo Cuarto before moving to River in 1990 and making his first-team debut in 1996 at the tender age of 16.

Over the past two years he has become the team’s indisputable playmaker, leading River to the 1999 Apertura and 2000 Clausura championships.

In his 84 total matches for River, Aimar has scored 22 goals, mostly from free-kicks, which are a specialty of his.

I reported this in the other Aimar thread earlier today. After miscellaneous fees and commissions it breaks down to approx US$15.5 million which is a net figure to River. However the gross amount is approx US$20 million.

I think that Pintado and Davicce who will be travel with Aimar to Spain tonight will look to negotiate and therefore possibly increase the net figure which River will be receiving.

I can't believe River sold Aimar for only 15 million dollars, this is a great bargain for Valencia because about a year ago, River Plate said that Aimar was worth between 30-35 million dollars. If I was in charge of River, I would not sell Aimar for less than 30 million; Aimar is 21, he has many years of career in front of him, River is losing big time with this deal because Aimar is going to be huge and selling him for only 15 million is way too cheap for what he is worth.

It was Aimar who pushed for the transfer and he got his wish. The last thing that River would want is an unhappy player who may start to under perform. If Aimar's morale remained low than sooner or later his performances would drop and would his market value. I think that River looked at all the angles. I am also convinced that Pintado and Davicce will continue to negotiate (to increase the amount) with Valencia once they all get to Spain tomorrow.

I think it doesnt put as much pressure on aimar to perform because its hard for a young player to be priced so high and be expected alot. even though 20million is not as much as i expected, its good enough.

One thing i dont get is, will he join Valencia right away or next season?

I hope he joins right away because I will be watching Valencia's 2 matches against Man united in Champions League...I will be praying for Aimar to be there and to start.:D

Lazio is Lazio. Seemingly, they have endless amounts money to spend. They have spent enormous amounts of money on players such as Crespo ($54 million) Veron, Salas amongst others. For Lazio to seal a transfer of $16 million for Castroman is not the biggest thing. It's not the biggest thing, because their is an active precedence here.

Valencia is quite different. Aimar is the most expensive signing in the history of the club, for them a $20 million dollar transfer for virtually any player represents an audacious move on their behalf.

Personally, I'm glad that Aimar has ended up in Spain. The pace of Spanish game suits him. He is joining a good club, that has room for improvement. I'm sure that they will design their offence around him, and he'll become an important player for Valencia.

I think the transfare's fee couldnt compared to the period of time that he will stay there. Seven and a half years, its toooooo long for only 20 millions. Denilson sold to Real B. for 36 millions and 10 years.

The worst thing about this transfare that it happened after Valencia playing against Real and Braca. They met against them in the last two weekends.

It appears that what I wrote in an earlier post has come to light. Heavy negotiations cotinued for hours tonight and Valencia it appears are willing to pay River an additional US$2 million dollars. If this is the case after fees and taxes River would net a total of US17.5 million.
