Seeing as Loic Remy just went to QPR purely for the money I thought I`d bring up this subject.....

Also many players unfortunately don`t show heart and that would be happy sitting on the bench collecting their wages (like Winston Bogarde) compared to players that would do anything to play. Any examples you know?

I remember the Roma midfielder Tomassi....who requested a salary of €1,500 a month as he had been injured for months with a knee injury. Economic considerations then were low on his list of priorities and requested minimum wage till he got back to his same level. Still gave Roma his all.

How much does Steven Gerrard make? Please include a link to it too. thank you.

I remember Steven gerrard puttng in a transfer request until he was burnt in efigy on skysports, his family threatened AND HE WAS GIVEN A HUGE PAY INCREASE.

Running around like a maniac and kissingt he badge of liverpool doesnt fool me. Please tell me Gerrard is the lowest paid player at Liverpool and in fact, he cant even afford a duplx and he brings lunch to all the other players at liverpool every day.

The highest paid player all of a sudden is said to play for his "heart" simply because he screams and runs around after he scores.

Redondo gave up his salary too at some point during his longtime injury with Milan...not exactly "for the shirt" but rather because of professional pride and sense of fairness I guess.

Which is the case with Totti, Gerrard, Maldini, Puyol, Xavi, etc. Sure there might have been more money available elsewhere, but they have always been on extremely high wages. Much easier to play for the shirt under those circumstances...

Now let's hear more of the players who actually stayed in small clubs on a low salary when there was a chance to cash in.

not only like this whether they play for small club or not..

let's take Gerrard as example, he had the chance to leave liverpool and play for chelsea, real madrid, not only because big clubs(because liverpool is bigger ;)), but because they have been in a better circumstances, and have completely better chances to win trophies and the league title, maybe more salary, more class players in the team..etc.

Matthew Le Tissier on Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of him in the early 90's:
"Back in those days there wasn't such a massive difference in wages between a team like Southampton and Tottenham. The difference pre-Sky wasn't that big, so it wasn't difficult to turn it down. But if I was in the situation now there's no way I could stay at Southampton. If you're on 10 grand a week and somebody is going to offer you 150 grand a week, it's not quite the same as being on 10 grand a week and turning down 15 grand a week."

Steve Bull from Wolves.

ALl the other ones are pretty easy to do. Xavi, Maldini etc... Put them in Serie B or second division and if their biggest rivals came in with big money, I'm pretty sure they would play for either real madrid or inter milan.

Marcos rejected big money from arsenal to play all his career with Palmeiras. But he made good money anyway. But rejected world fame and premiership money.

his name was strictly connected to Juventus, who remain a big club even if they are forced to spend a season in serie B, and he had to gain more in staying than in leaving. Hey, he was the player-symbol of Juventus. Surely he didn't expect to be dumped by Juventus later otherwise he would have left before.

Players who played for the shirt and not just for the money

I 'd Say Ibrahimovic, he played his best every match. Every shirt he plays for.

More like a personal standard, than anything else .. (money).

His professionalism and commitments are just as good as those one-club guys.

like Raul or Hierro, eventually they get old and go... nothing wrong with playing for another club/s.

Joseba Etxeberria - 15 years of service at Athletic and played his last year for free at the club. He could've gone to bigger clubs, never did.

Mikel Aranburu - Another one who got 15 years under his belt, though for Real Sociedad until he retired last year. The difference here is that he actually played all his life at Erreala.

Adelardo - Came from Extremadura as a 20-year old to Atlético in 1959 but spent a good 17 years at the club and holds the record for most games played.
