This thread will be severely moderated.
No politics WHATSOEVER. It would be too bad to lose a general news thread, because there have been some great articles posted in the last (now-deceased, gyanke tsezi) thread.

Armenians of France refused from participating in inauguration of Holy Cross

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) refused to take part in inauguration of the Holy Church on Akhtamar island. French independent journalist Jean Eckian told the PanARMENIAN.Net corespondent that in his letter addressed to Van governor Alexis Govciyan stated that the Holy Cross Church, which is an Armenian cultural heritage, must remain property of the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey and function as a temple. Also, A. Govciyan pointed out the inadmissibility of transforing the church into a museum without any reference of his belonging to the cultural Armenian heritage.

--------------------------------

Transformation of Akhtamar Church into museum shows Turkeys real intentions

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The inauguration of the Holy Cross Church on Akhtamar island as a “monument-museum” shows real intentions of the Turkish government, “Hay Dat” Office head Giro Manoyan stated to the PanARMENIAN.Net journalist. “They turned the church into a museum, where it is forbidden to pray and deliver services. Such an example in Turkey already exists – the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, which has been turned into a museum. Being Ankara’s hostage the Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul asked the authorities to give him one day annually for praying in the church and this is an evidence for desecration of the temple,” Manoyan underlined. Thus, Giro Manoyan thinks that official Ankara from the one hand tried to show that he makes a positive step towards Armenian, and from the other hand Armenians are forbidden to pray there. “Archbishop Mutafyan during inauguration underlined that the church has not functioned over 90 years but always has been and is a temple. We shouldn’t view the reconstruction of the church positively. Turkey officially invited Armenian in the inauguration ceremony purely for propaganda purposes. It should have met the Armenian delegation on the border and not to make them reach Van via Georgia. The stance of Armenian Patriarch, as well as Catholicoses of Echmiadzin and Great House of Kilikia made Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister add that it was a church and not only a “historical monument”. I think following this propaganda move aimed at the world community we must take actions in order to prove that it is forbidden to pray there. Renovation of the Holy Cross Church as a “monument” must not serve Turkey’s intentions for abolishing the fact that Armenians were the native population of Western Armenia,” Giro Manoyan stressed.

The so-called ‘Akdamar museum’

Friday, March 30, 2007
Cengiz Çandar

This is the day of the opening of a "church-museum," which the Minister of Cultural Affairs turned into a mess. Whatever the intention was, it looks like a "cultural genocide." Today is indeed the day of the opening of the Ahtamar Church, which has been just restored, to "tourism," and which is expected to attract many tourists to Eastern Anatolia.

However the Ministry has renamed the 1000-year-old Armenian capital "Ani" as "Anı" (which means "memory" in Turkish), and also removed the cross and the bells from the Ahtamar Church, which it renamed as "Akdamar" (which means "white vein" in Turkish.) This obsession with renaming, the cultural and religious intolerance shown towards the cross and the church bell, might well be perceived in the world as a "cultural genocide"; nobody should be surprised if that turns out to be the case.

The obsession with renaming:

The name Akhtamar comes from a myth about the lake Van. It is about the story of a young man, who was looking forward to reunite with his lover, Tamar, who was on the island along with the church in question. The man yelled "Ah, Tamar" while he was drowning. Why in the world we change that name into "Akdamar"?

What kind of a lack of imagination is that? We have renamed many historical areas within Turkey with completely made-up names like "Güzelyurt" (Beautiful Home), "Yeşilyurt" (Green Home), "Yeşilköy" (Green Village), "Gündoğan" (Rising Day). And now, "Ani" turned into "Anı", and "Akhtamar" into "Akdamar."

You restore a historical church and find absurd reasons for not putting a cross and a bell onto it? Who will believe that you are secular, or that you "respect all faiths," or that you represent "the alliance of civilizations against the clash of civilizations."

What you do is simply "cultural genocide." How come you have the right for that? And why?

Here is an excerpt from a news story published in the weekly Agos on March 23, and which tells about the letter sent by a group of intellectuals from the Istanbul Armenian community to Minister of Culture, Atilla Koç:

“…Emphasizing that the church on the island is named “Ahtamar Sourp Haç Church” and that it gets its name from the Sourp Haç festival celebrated on the second Sunday of every September, the intellectuals say: ‘This is an important day and an important festival for Armenians. This is also the reason for the existence of that church. Therefore, we think it would be appropriate to have the name of the church, just like the name of the island, to be changed to fit the its religious and historical significance… If required, the ownership of the property can be given to the community and the operation right to the relative state body. However, if this site will also be [serving as] a church, then it needs to be blessed and open to prayers'.”

Turkish Armenian Patriarch Mesrop II says: “Is it possible to have a church without a cross at the top? Furthermore, religious services will not be conducted at its opening. If I will not have a role there as a [man of] religion, there will not be a point in my going there.”

Appear righteous and benefit politically:

What do you think “our set” are trying to do? If you ask me, they would like “to appear righteous and benefit politically.” And naturally they make a mess out of it. The initial plans were for the opening of Ahtamar to take place on Apr. 24. A real cunning idea... As it is known to be the “Armenian genocide remembrance day in the world,” a trump for propaganda would have been used on that day.

Then the date became Apr. 11. According to the ancient Armenian calendar, Apr. 11 coincides with Apr. 24. They probably knew this also. They were still pursuing another cunning idea. At the end, it was decided that the opening of Ahtamar, now “Akdamar,” would take place on Mar. 29, as a restoration opening of a museum-church, without a cross or a bell.

What a disgrace. The cross a symbol for the Christian world that represents Jesus Christ's suffering for all humanity. Even if Muslims do not believe in the cross, and even if there are negative connotations of the cross throughout history for Muslims, would it not be necessary to “show respect toward everyone's faiths” in a secular country in 2007? Would such an attitude not glorify a Muslim Culture Minister and his government?

On one hand, they constantly pronounce Fatih Sultan Mehmet's name, yet on the other, they cannot even come near what he has done 550 years ago or his tolerance. They have learned nothing from him.

Hrant Dink foretold it:

A reminder, just in case you have forgotten, that Hrant Dink was treacherously murdered with a shot in the back on Jan. 19. During the time of his murder, the last Agos newspaper he prepared, Agos's 564th issue has just hit the newsstands. The headline of the newspaper was on Ahtamar and so was the editorial, which Hrant wrote and signed as “Agos.”

Here's what Hrant Dink wrote in his editorial:

“The opening of the restored Surp Haç Armenian Church of Ahtamar Island has turned into a comedy. It could only be possible to put a right job on a wrong course so successfully. The impossible-to-hide hidden motive could not be more revealing. A real comedy… A real tragedy… The government hasn't still been able to formulate a correct approach to the “Armenian question.” Its real aim is not to solve the problem, but to gain points like a wrestler in a contest. How and when it will make the right move and defeat its opponent. That's the only concern. This is not earnestness. The state calls on Armenian historians to discuss history, but does not shy from trying its own intellectuals who have an unorthodox rhetoric on the Armenian genocide. It restores an Armenian church in the Southeast, but only thinks, “How can I use this for political gains in the world, how can I sell it?”

They shot Hrant on the day this article was published. It lost its charm in entity. There has been no charm ever since that day. Bad smells come from the Hrant Dink murder investigation.

And today, they replace the cross with the icing on the cake, when they open the Ahtamar Sourp Haç Church as “Akdamar.” Then the “alleged genocide” and “alliance of civilizations” rhetoric will follow.

St. Cross without a cross

ARF’s Nikol Aghbalian Student Union organized an exhibition titled “Cultural Genocide” in front of the Yerevan State University. The exhibition was organized as a response to the opening ceremony of Surb Khach Church on Akhtamar Island.

“By renovating the Surb Khach Church Turkey is trying to present itself as a civilized country. However, the Church will not operate as a church but will be turned into a tourist museum. Turkey wants to prove to the world that is protecting architectural monuments of global importance. This exhibition reveals Turkey’s true face. The Turks have destroyed thousands of monuments,” Chairman of the Student Union Vahe Sargsian says.

Nikol Aghbalian Student Union has organized similar exhibitions for several years and new items are added to these exhibitions every year. “This means that Turkey is continuing its acts of vandalism and will continue them as long as it does not change,” the organizers say adding that the photos will be exhibited in all large universities.

The visitors of the exhibition received leaflets containing the following statement:
“The opening of Surb Khach Church on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van is another propaganda measure by the Turkish state aimed at proving to the world that the Turkish state’s centuries’ old policy of hatred towards the Armenians has changed. While acknowledging the opening of Surb Khach Church as progress, as insufficient as it is, we should state that most of the Armenian historical and cultural monuments that happened to be located on the territory of the Turkish state have either been destroyed or are on the edge of destruction. It is strange that the Surb Khach Church is reopened without a cross.

Being interesting in gaining political and economic profit, the Turkish authorities do not spare any efforts to present the opening of the Armenian church as an act of “good will” towards the Armenians in an attempt to hinder the process of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Taking into consideration all this, we, the Armenian young people, call on Turkey to look at the reality through the prism of truth, and stop the massive destruction of Armenian monuments on the territory of Western Armenia. We call on Turkey to stop distorting the fact of these territories’ being Armenian, stop violation of the Armenian minority’s rights in Turkey, to stop the blockade of Armenia and the denial of the Armenian Genocide. Only this will make it possible for Turkey to present itself to the world the way it wants to present itself now.”

Because of Armenian Genocide bill Turkey suspended talks with Gaz de France

06.04.2007 13:06

YEREVAN (YERKIR) - Turkey has suspended talks with Gaz de France (GDF) on the French firm’s possible participation in a major Nabucco pipeline project, where key players are Turkey’s energy ministry and the state-owned oil and gas company BOTAS, AFP reports citing the Anatolia news agency.

The cause of suspending the talks is the bill pending in the French Senate. The bill penalizes denial of the Armenian Genocide. The five-company consortium plans to build a 3,300-kilometre conduit that will carry natural gas from the Middle East and Central Asia to the European Union via Turkey and the Balkans, bypassing Russia.

The other partners in the venture are gas companies from Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. The consortium had been in contact with GDF for some time as part of its efforts to find a sixth partner in the six-billion-dollar project, which is expected to become operational in 2012.

The four other partners approved GDF’s participation, but Turkey has opposed it because of a French draft law that makes it a criminal offense to deny the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman Turkey during World War I. The bill was adopted by the French National Assembly in October 2006.

“We will suspend partnership with Gaz de France until the French presidential elections. We will decide according to policies to be followed after the elections,” a senior energy ministry official, who declined to be named, said. Energy Minister Hilmi Guler declined to comment on the issue of Gaz de France.

“We attach great importance to the Nabucco project. We realized the first phase of this project. Turkey is in an important position in meeting Europe’s gas needs and we are aware of this,” Guler stated to Reuters. Gaz de France had no immediate comment, PanARMENIAN.Net reported.

Support grows for Armenian Genocide resolution among Congressmen

11.04.2007 14:28

YEREVAN (YERKIR) - In letters circulated today to Members of the House of Representatives, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) highlighted the growing support for the Armenian Genocide Resolution among members serving on Congressional committees dealing with America’s defense capabilities, intelligence community, foreign policy, and homeland security.

"We are deeply gratified by the strong, bipartisan support for the Armenian Genocide Resolution among Members of Congress responsible for our nation’s defense and foreign policies," said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA.

"Beyond the clear moral issues at stake in America’s principled stand against all genocides, these Members realize that Turkey, by coming to terms with this crime, will lower regional tensions, open the door to improved relations with Armenia, and ultimately contribute to its own acceptance by the European family of nations."

JSC “Etalon” had to pay 10 000 rubles for preview trailer with a dance on Jesus Christ’s face

Image

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Vasileostrovski Court of Saint Petersburg in an open session examined Artak Aleksanyan’s suit against JSC “National Broadcasting Network, “Etalon”, “Rambler Broadcasting Corporation” TV Radio Company. A. Aleksanyan demanded to compensate the moral damage, which was caused to him by a preview trailer shown on NVM channel’s “Voyage” program from 2005 till the beginning of 2006. The preview trailer, which tells about trips to Turkey, shows people in dervish dresses dance on cruciform nimbus of Jesus Christ. A. Aleksanyan indicated that he is a believer, and the above mentioned trailer insults his religious feelings, causes moral sufferings and is capable of resulting in religious animosity.

Russia based “Yerkramas” Armenian newspaper reports that during the court process an expertise was drawn up. The document confirms that the video fragment, where dervishes dance on the cruciform nimbus of Jesus Christ, debases Christians. According to Saints Petersburg Diocesan Board of Moscow Patriarchate, the frames, which show people in dervish dresses dance on Jesus Christ icon, is a video-edition, i.e., deliberate combination of two different objects in frames. It is Jesus Christ’s mosaic icon, which now is on the walls of St. Sofia Church in Istanbul. It is one of the most important elements in the faith of Orthodox believers. Consequently, improper and blasphemous treatment towards it may be viewed as insult to religious feelings.

The court ruled that the disputed preview trailer insulted plaintiff ‘s religious feelings, which caused him moral damage. However, according to the court there is no proof about inciting religious animosity in the case. Court thinks the preview trailer is unethical, and by act of Federal Law on Advertisement dated 18.07.1995, which was in force, when disputable legal relationships occurred, unethical advertisements are not allowed.

The court ruled that JSC “Etalon”, which ordered the preview trailer, is responsible for causing the plaintiff moral damage. While determining the amount of compensation for moral damage, the court took into account the degree of guilt, degree of moral sufferings of the plaintiff, requirements of justice and rationality. Thus, according to the court’s decision JSC “Etalon” must pay 10 000 rubles as compensation for moral damage to Artak Aleksanyan.

Turkish MFA refused to hoist cross on Akhtamar Church

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Turkish Foreign Ministry has rejected the proposal of Patriarch of Constantinople Mesrob Mutafyan to hoist a cross on the Holy Cross Church on Akhtamar island. The request, which was initially addressed to the Minister of Culture and Tourism, was later on handed to the Foreign Ministry, which announced its decision on the issue.

“There is not a cross even at Hagia Sofia Temple, since it’s a museum. The Church on Akhtamar will also function as a museum and hoisting a cross on its dome would be a wrong step,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said, Marmara Istanbul-based newspaper reports.

Wooow, why I'm not surprised hm...??? Let me think, is that maybe because I know for sure that mongol barbarians from Altay will never be more then barbarians, even if they changed there name, faking history etc. Better if I will stopp here...

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Proclamation

Between the years 1915 and 1923, during the chaos of World War I, over one million Armenian men, women and children living within the Ottoman Empire’s borders were killed; forcing hundreds of thousands of Armenians to flee to foreign countries after being stripped of their possessions, their identities and their homeland.

Scores fled to the United States, and California was fortunate to become home to one of the largest populations of Armenians outside the Republic of Armenia. Many of California’s Armenian-American families are the descendants of these courageous genocide survivors, whose hope for a life independent [of] war and violence was realized on our soil. Like their family members before them, the Armenian-American community bravely flourished and contributed much to our state and nation.

Documented as the first instance of genocide in the twentieth century, the Armenian Genocide remains unacknowledged to this day. I strongly echo the sentiments that all nations must examine their own painful histories, as the denial of genocide further wounds a nation’s ability to heal. Though over ninety years have passed since these mass killings took place, present day atrocities resonate throughout the world. It is our responsibility to recognize the brutal slayings of so many innocents, remembering their suffering and vowing to help prevent future genocides.

I join California’s Armenian-American communities and all Armenians worldwide in remembering those who were killed and persecuted during the Armenian Genocide, and urge people throughout the world to never forget these horrific crimes against humanity.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim the week of April 22nd – April 29th, 2007 as “Days of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed to this 6th day of April 2007.
