I just read on the danish news that Alfio "Coco" Basile is appointed as the new coach for Argentina.
He was coach from 1990-1994 were Argentina won copa two times. He resigned after the 1/8-final defeat to Romania in the 1994 world cup.

Looks like he's been offered the post. I hope he takes it. Are we going to get '94 style football again? I'm beginning to slobber all over.
The 1994 had a championship spirit, there were players from the team that won the world cup in 1986 and the team that reached the final in 1990, they were playing for championship always.

We don't have that spirit now, we need to win copa america and confed cup before the next world glass :smileani:

it will not be that hard for Basile, Pekerman's team is so good and if combine with Basile's attacking game they will do well.
I am sure Basile knows how to handle a game better than pekerman, although i think pekerman should be there too, as he is the best coach i have ever seen in terms of preparing a team.

Basile insinúa que aceptará dirigir a Argentina
(domingo 23 de julio, 12:00 PM)

PUBLICIDAD

Basile offered Argentina post, say Boca Juniors

According to club president Mauricio Macri, Boca Juniors manager Alfio Basile has been tabbed as the man to replace departed Argentina boss Jose Pekerman – but they haven’t decided yet whether to let him leave or not.

"There's a concrete offer for Basile to take over the national team," he told reporters. "We've asked for some hours, for some days to reflect on what we're going to do."

"Basile will accept Boca's decision and will happily stay here if that is what the club decides."

Basile previously won two Copa America titles and led the Albiceleste to the World Cup 1994 round of 16 in his previous three-year stint in charge.

BUENOS AIRES, - Argentina have offered Alfio Basile a chance to coach their national team for a second time, the president of Basile's club Boca Juniors said Wednesday.

However, Boca said they have not yet decided whether to allow Basile, who led Argentina at the 1994 World Cup, to replace Jose Pekerman.

'There's a concrete offer for Basile to take over the national team,' Boca president Mauricio Macri told reporters.

'We've asked for some hours, for some days to reflect on what we're going to do,' he said.

'Basile will accept Boca's decision and will happily stay here if that is what the club decides.'

The gruff Basile coached Argentina from 1991 to 1994 when they won the Copa America twice and reached the second round at the 1994 World Cup before losing to Romania.

He also suffered a humiliating 5-0 home defeat by Colombia in a World Cup qualifier in 1993.

Basile has won two successive Argentine championships since joining Boca last year.

Earlier on Wednesday, Argentina Football Association president Julio Grondona told the sports daily Ole that Pekerman had confirmed his intention to step down.

Pekerman first announced his decision immediately after Argentina lost on penalties to Germany in their World Cup quarter-final.

Other candidates for the job include Diego Maradona, Daniel Passarella and Carlos Bilardo, who led Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986 and second place four years later.

Macri, who has already seen goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri depart to join Spanish club Getafe, was frustrated at the possibility of losing a coach who has rebuilt Boca after an unhappy period.

'I've got a club with an orderly and competitive squad,' said Macri. 'First the goalkeeper decides to go to Europe and suddenly the coach receives this offer.

'I knew that the price for winning championships was that they buy your players but now it's the coach as well.'

There is an issue with Boca. Macri, Boca's President wants to hold on to Basile until December as they have not found an adequate replacement. Grondona AFA's head wants Basile imediately so it seems that Macri and Grondona will be meeting shortly to hopefully reach an agreement, otherwise Grondona might just start looking elsewhere.

Macri is a baby. So typical of him to want to have the cake and the crums.

When Passarella was called in '94 River allowed him to leave right away. The same was the case with Bielsa in '98 with Espanyol.

Once thing's for sure. La bosta will not get Miguel Angel Russo.

Basile will remain with Boca until September 14, then he will officialy begin as coach of the NT.

Alfio Basile - new coach of Argentina national team (1 Aug 2006 09:11 GMT)

Alfio Basile has been appointed coach of Argentina national time for the second time. He was already coach in early 90ths.

However, Basile says he'll continue to manage Boca Juniors for six more weeks to give Boca more time to find his replacement.

He'll then step down and take over Argentina on Sept. 15, as agreed with Julio Grondona, president of the Argentine Football Association, in half-hour talks on Monday.

"We have agreed with the AFA president that Basile will lead Boca through the Recopa Sudamericana tournament," Boca president Mauricio Macri said at a news conference with Basile.

The decision was "common sense," Macri said, as the AFA did not wish to "harm" Boca by forcing an abrupt departure by Basile just as the first-division Apertura season starts on Sunday.

Basile said he looked forward to coaching Boca through the Recopa in early September, when Boca faces Sao Paulo of Brazil.

"Thank God everything is cleared up," he said. "Tomorrow I will be coaching Boca as always."

He said he had yet to sign a contract to lead the national team but made clear it was just a matter of completing details - and that he looked forward to returning to the national coaching post he held from 1990 to 1994.

"Obviously I'm very proud to return to coaching the national team. I will join them with great enthusiasm because of the great number of top-notch players," he said.

The AFA approached Basile about replacing Jose Pekerman as manager of the Albicelestes shortly after Pekerman resigned after Argentina was eliminated in the World Cup quarterfinals.

Grondona confirms that Tocalli and Fillol will continue with the youth team and hinted that there may be a friendly vs. Brazil on September 2 in London.
