Information current as of December 1, 2002:
Christine Sinclair is 19 years old (born June 12, 1983). She's 5'9" (175 cm) and 135 lbs. (61 kg).
Christine has 22 goals in 15 international appearances for the Canadian U-19 women's soccer team.
She has scored 32 goals (ranking 3rd in the all-time list) in 40 caps for the senior Canadian women's soccer team. She made her debut with the team at the Algarve Cup on March 14, 2000, at age 16. Two days later she scored her first international goal, against Norway.
Sinclair studies life sciences at the University of Portland in the USA, and has a 3.7 GPA. In 18 games this season for the Portland Pilots she scored 23 goals. In four playoff games so far she has scored 7 goals, eclipsing the NCAA tournament record of 6, held by Mia Hamm. In only her second year at Portland, she has 12 goals in 9 career NCAA playoff games so far; the career record is 15 goals in 4 years, also held by Hamm (for now, anyway
).
On Nov. 30, 2002 Portland advanced to the Division 1 semi-finals, so Christine has further opportunities to improve her playoff record.
As Captain of the Canadian U-19 team, Sinclair was the star of the inaugural FIFA women's U-19 world cup last summer, scoring 10 goals in 6 games. She won the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball, as well as a silver medal for Canada's heartbreaking, 109th-minute, 1-0 loss to USA in the final.
As an attacking midfielder on the Canadian senior team Christine scored 7 goals in 5 games at the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament in November, 2002, helping Canada clinch a spot in the 2003 World Cup.
In Portland's off-season, Christine plays for the Vancouver Breakers of the USL W-League. Although she played only four games in 2002 (because of the FIFA and CONCACAF tournaments) she led the team by the end of the season with 7 goals.
How does she do it? She has a deceptive ability to put on a burst of speed when defenders least expect it. She has excellent technique and fitness. Her accuracy with both head and foot is deadly. She is a surprisingly physical player for her size. And she's tough-minded enough to shake off a punishing tackle or to keep herself focused when others let their intensity drop.
In last year's Soccer Buzz awards, determined by voting of 278 college soccer coaches, Christine Sinclair was named National Freshman of the Year and was the only freshman on the All-American first team. While the 2002 Soccer Buzz awards have not yet been announced, Sinclair is already the 2002 All-West-Coast-Conference Player of the Year.
