BERLIN, Jan 25 (Reuters)(DS) - Munich might miss out on the 2006
World Cup if it failed to reach an agreement on a new stadium,
Franz Beckenbauer said on Thursday.
"If a solution regarding a stadium in Munich is not found
quickly, then Berlin will stage not only the final but the
opening game as well," said the 2006 World Cup organising
committee chairman.
Munich is scheduled to host the opening game of the finals
but the Bavarian city needs a stadium.
Late last year architects surprisingly withdrew their plan
to modernise the ageing Olympic stadium, built for the 1972
Games and used for the 1974 World Cup.
Now a new stadium should be built with local clubs Bayern
and TSV 1860 contributing to the costs.
"Everything speaks for a new stadium but we don't know
whether it will be built in or outside Munich," said
Beckenbauer, who is also the Bayern president.
Munich will lose its chance of staging matches if a solution
has not been found before May this year, Beckenbauer warned.

Whoa, that would be kinda ironic if Munich doesn't get to host any of the games of the WC2006! When will the verdict be out abt all the stadiums that get to host the matches?

Also, which other cities (stadia) are the candidates for hosting the games for the WC2006? How many cities will it be in total?
