Milan's financial situation

A very interesting article

I don't think anyone can deny that the club has been managed very poorly in this aspect. The wage bill is ridicilous (although the taxes in Italy don't help but isn't the situation the same in England?). Bayern is the perfect example of how a club needs to operate. Despite being smaller than Milan in almost everything, their revenue has surpassed us and it continues to rise.

How will the new "UEFA Financial Fair Play" rule affect us? Berlusconi wont be able to cover the losses in a few years. What will the future bring? Something definitly needs to change. Cutting the wage bill is a must. I'm sure we can atract much better players for less money than what we're paying now for some of these "stars". A new stadium... or even better a Milan owned San Siro would help a lot but I don't see it happening any time soon.

What do you think?

Not much to add to a very good article. We are obviously dependent on Berlusconi to finance losses. I dont believe for a second that the UEFA rules cant be circumvented, so we are only at the mercy of the president, but that is hardly news.

Great read though

The stadium issue is a very important one and some that is mirrored all over Italy. Says a lot too when a Danish team that owns their own stadium can just elevate themselves far over the other scandinavian teams and how the English teams that have their own owned stadiums make so much more.

The wage issue we have talked about long here. Is especially bad if compared to the high-mid table teams in serie A.

A good example would be Lavezzi-Robinho. When it comes to what they could contribute to this team I wouldn't see much of a difference, but Robinho earns several times as much in wages.

Missed this post.

I still don't understand how Italy seems to be stuck in the dark ages while clubs in other leagues have realised what a boost to a club's economy a new stadium can mean. I mean looking at the stadiums around the league, one has to wonder if all these clubs are run by imbeciles. Surely a stadium is expensive but there are differend ways to finance it and in most cases the money will be made back pretty quickly.

Regarding Robinho-Lavezzi... pretty good comparison. It puzzles me how our wages are a lot higher than let's say those of the club that pumped us 7-2 last year in the CL

Privately owned clubs are rich people's way of paying back what they have took away from society. They will always be dependent on their owner. Nothing wrong with that. FC Byern is a firm, it's a different story.

We are a firm, but a subsidiary of Berlusconi, Inc. He says when to spend, and when not. This is not our only cycle with Berlu. Remember the late 90s early 00s?

Why? Don't you play FM?

You are a cheat :D

That's so poetic....

Well agreeing to pay very high wages is the trade off Milan have made to get major stars for relatively cheap. That's why when people were celebrating getting Ibra and Robinho for the sums that they did, i wondered if they factored the long term financial burden of their high salaries. Even Ronaldinho who was bought for 'only' 20m, earns a massive 7.5m...that's a staggering amount for him.

As for the stadium issue, this is really something which is holding back Italian teams, and i'm really surprised there hasn't been a more collective approach by clubs forcing the hand of reluctant municipalities, that want to profit from renting existing stadiums.

That's not it. Our wage problem is more squad players of dubious quality having wages higher than the biggest stars in Napoli and Fiorentina. Players like Jankulovski and Oddo who isn't good enough would be the best paid in most other serie A clubs. Workmanlike players like Gattuso, Ambrosini and Flamini got star wages.

Yeah, I guess the only star that really deserve his wage right now is Zlatan. I don't mention Pato, because he is actually almost underpaid considering his contribution.

Next season, without Jankulovski and Ronaldinho we will already be much better off in wages. Now if we only could get rid of Oddo too. Inzaghi? another one on high wages that only comes in with the occasional goal, but got huge wages.

Interesting read. I really don't see us investing in a new stadium any time soon, though.

Zlatan 9m - Hell of a lot, but ok with these performances.
Ronaldinho 7,5m - WAAAAY too much.
Pirlo 6m - Too much. 4m at max.
Flamini 4,5m - Too much for a rotation player
Nesta - 4,5m - Ok. Leaving?
Robinho 4m - Too early to tell.
Seedorf 4m - His wages should be paid depending on his performance :D
Gattuso 3,5m - He is playing great this season, but still a little too much?
Zambrotta 3,5m - Should be more like 1,5m
Ambro 3m - Captain... meh.
Jankulovski 2,8m - Do I really need to comment?
Pato 2,5m - Underpaid.
Thiago Silva 2,5m - Should be same as Nesta's
Abbiati 2m - Ok
Bonera 2m - Too much for a rotation player
Inzaghi 2m - I'm fine with this, but I guess most aren't
Oddo 1,3m - ... (2 assists! :D)
Abate 1m - Good performances so far. 1,5m next contract?
Amelia 1m - Ok I guess
Antonini 1m - Same as Abate
Boateng 1m - Cheap
Onyewu 1m - Shouldn't be in the team anyway
Papa 1m - ok?
Yepes 1m - ok?
Roma 0,4m - Not important.

What exactly prevents a team of Milan's stature from getting its own stadium these days, I wonder? Granted you'll need a larger one than Juventus, but even ours seems to be nearly 80% funded by selling the naming rights through Sportfive (80m over some amount of years taken from the total cost of "only" 105m euros for the stadium). Even allowing for a facility costing twice as much, shouldn't there be corporations queuing up to slap their name upon it? I must be missing something glaringly obvious here...

160?!? Didn't Galliani manage to lower the wages from last season? Now it feels like they increased instead. In comparison Inter's got €145m, Juve €100M, Roma €76,5m, Napoli €41,2M and Lazio €50,2m. Such huge differences...
