According to an interview with La Gazzetta Dello Sport, he has the following formation in mind:

------------------------Buffon--------------------------

Thuram---Legrottaglie---Montero---Zambrotta

---------------Tacchinardi---Davids-----------------

--------Miccoli--------Nedved---------Del Piero----

----------------------Trezeguet-----------------------

So he has in mind to play Miccoli, Nedved, Del Piero and Trezeguet in the starting 11. I was hoping he was thinking that.

I have a feeling that Juve will play very attacking and attractive football next season.

that explains why we havent really looked at another creative midfielder.

we can reshuffle players around for that side well.

and that explains why Appiah was brought in with maresca. we have cover for the two most important positions on the field for that formation to work.

also, we have back up in camoranesi and di vaio for the 3 behind the strikers. including the option of bringing zambro up as well. also olivera if he stays. and maybe even Salas if he can find some form.

the only problem is whether we can get a good replacement for trez upfront if he gets injured.

My goodness me! Have you ever seen something like that in your life? I think it must be very flexible because Del Piero and Miccoli aren´t typical wingers I guess;) There will be very important role of wing backs. I didn´t believe Miccoli and Del Piero could play together in one team... I though Camoranesi or Zambrotta would play in midfield.

Good team!

You see....I think that formation is fab.

This is why:

Miccoli, Nedved and Del Piero can play anywhere behind Trezeguet. So there is plenty of scope for attacking movement and creative play.

Not natural wingers? True BUT......

This is why Tacch plays really deep as a quasi defender in midfield.....this allows both Thuram and Zambrotta more leeway to attack on the wings.

Juve was doing this last season as well. Out of all the teams in Serie A, Juve's fullbacks were the most attacking i.e they are more like wingbacks in Lippi's formation.

We have LOADS of FLEXIBILITY. This is why I think our team is truly COMPLETE. If we can't sell Salas at a good price then keep him for another year. Who knows? He may come good again.

Back ups for Trez? mmmm....Zalayeta, Di Vaio and Salas. I think that is OK.

we were basically using this formation last season anyway. but we had camoranesi where miccoli is lined up.

we were always relying on zambrotta to take the whole left wing as well. so with thuram attacking, as he normally does anyway, this suits the team.

zalayeta isnt a good enough player to take on trez's role. i guess di vaio will be okay as his qualities can suit that formation.

i tend to think that salas would be more of a replacement as one of those 3 behind the strikers.

one thing i am worried about is back up for thuram and zambrotta. birindelli and pessotto are good defensively, but dont really have the talent to attack on those wings like zambro and thuram do.

do you think thats why players like Grygera and Oddo have been rumoured previously? i think we should really buy one of those to back thuram up.

Grygera might be ideal. He is as good on the left as on the right. Good good talent. Never has bad game, always dangerous with his crosses and combinating on the wing with PoborskĂ˝. Buy him!

birindelli does okay as a left back or right back, but not with this formation which emphasises on the wingbacks to really attack.

same goes for pessotto, once he could do that, i think he isnt the same player he once was.

i wouldnt mind getting Zauri actually, he is able to take both sides and attack good as well.

but grygera would be my first player to get.

The 4231 formation Lippi has in mind looks very impressive! It makes perfect sense with our signings so far! Like CUG I am concerned about our sideback cover. Birindelli does okay IMO, he comes forward and defends well. Now Pesso is another thing. So I think it could be wise to get another good wingback in our team. I'm also very fond of Zauri. BUT it's easier said than done that he'll be good for us. Grygera I have neever seen in action. I hear verygood things about him though!

IF we are to play with this formation we don't need the creative midfielder we have talked so much about, atleast we don't need to spend so much money on one. A wingback for cover is what is needed IMO.

Forgot about Salas. He could be a good sub for DP and Miccoli and in some part a possible absence of Nedved could be handled by playing him with Trez and DP as in the beginning of the CL of the 2001-2002 campaign.

But I'm afraid he'll never get the chance with Juve to get his best form back. Although I think, initially, he was a good buy.

About rotation for Zambro and Thuram: if Lippi hasn't a back-up, he'll change the formation. I think this is really one of the strengths of Juventus.
Strengths?? How long can Juve go on with this formation? Thuram, Neddy, Davids, Montero are all past 30.

Juve has to go with the younger route and Moggi realises that. The new signings have proven that. Lucio, Appiah, and the return of Miccoli and Maresca will rejuvenate the team and provide adequate replacement for the veterans.

Well, Thuram, Nedved and Davids are still in the squad. Of course one day they'll be replaced.
But I was speaking about the rotation with the current squad. And it's not always necessary to have identical replacements for players. Lippi is always able to change a formation. That flexibility is a huge advantage.

Agree. We can change to any formation very fast, be it 4231 to 4312 to 442. It really is one of our strengths.

Take Man Utd for example, only formation they manage to play is 442. They've tried 451 and 4312 and failed every time they've opted for it.

The ability to adapt and change is a strength of ours. No doubt!

That's a really exciting formation, flexible, attacking and with great chances.

My comments on each player

Buffon-- the best there is

Montero --- too old; not sure he can hold it there. Always exposed against speedy strikers, i.e. Ronaldo or Sheva in CL. Hopefully Lucio's coming in January.

Thuram --getting old, although he could last 2 more seasons

Legro --- needs to settle in

Zambro-- great player, a very flexible

Need some covers for Thuram/Zambro

MIDFIELD
Taki-- Davids-- Great Central pairing. With the addition of Appiah we could be more flexible and can afford Davids suspensions or Taki's losses of forrm ;)

Miccoli-- Great talent; liked what I saw last year

Nedved-- Simply our best player... and irreplaceable.

Del Piero-- Fantastic player, who kept Juve going, but never gained his superb form after that injury.

ATTACK
Treze-- had a bad season by his high standards; hope we see the magnificent Davide again... btw, we have no real substitute for him.

Here's wishing we get Corradi :D

If this really is true,I'm very happy.
We'll sometimes even eat teams alive with this formation.Teams like Bologna I mean,outsiders... ;)

Really,I'm verry happy with this. But we indeed need another defender to back-up Thuram.Grygera would be the best for this IMO...

Well, when I've got my laptop I'm gonna update CM and with the transfers and stuff.Looking forward to play with this tactic

The way it was described elsewhere was that Lippi, while receiving some reward, was taken aside by journalists who had written down this formation.

Lippi smiled and said "Good team", and went on to take a pen and add the substitutes below the starters catenaccio wrote (in braquets).

This is how it looked:

------------------Buffon
-----------------(Chimenti)
Thuram-----Legro---Montero----Zambro
(Birindelli)--(Ferrara)--(Tudor)--(Pessotto)
----------------------(Iuliano)
-----------Tacchi----Davids
---------(Maresca)---(Appiah)
----------(Conte)
-----Miccoli----Nedved----Del Piero
------Camo------Miccoli------Di Vaio
-------------Trézéguet
---------------Zalayeta

In any ase I think CUG is spot on in his analysis. For this team the only REALLY important signing that needs to be made is Corradi or similar. One would then have to say that if Corradi were to come at the expense of Di Vaio.. and we consider it more than likley taht Salas will go 'somewhere' - then I think we're suddenly a little strapped in those forward/winger positions. At least unless we use Zambro there which is also a good option... in which case we could use another attacking back.

Like CUG said- the 4-2-3-1 was used many times last season and it IS very similar to the 4-3-1-2 we had as the starting formation. Especially when Camo played the right wing as he was primarily offence whereas Davids and Tach dealt the defensive blows. This formation of course (4-2-3-1)- is identidal to Trap's new Italy, both position wise and regarding strategy. It's also better than Italy's lineup with the exception of the central defence.

My only fear is that DP won't excel in this formation. Otherwise all the others should be in their true element.

We will see, but like most of us agreed after the Appiah deal- if Maresca stays- we're very close to completion.

Going by last seasons form though- I'd hope Tudor or Ferrara (if he has the 'same' legs still) takes Montero's place. But on paper it looks very exciting.

Ciao.

I dont fear this, because then the hopes of the Azzuri also suffer. DP seems like he will play in the same role on the NT remember? And he did quite well in the one match so far. :)

About the formation...its the same formation i set up for the fifa 2003 video game last night, except I had Tudor in for Ferrera and DECO :D where Miccoli is. Tudor needs to start but I think Lippi wants a vetern presence at CB.

My concern is Trez is not fast enough to be a lone striker, but I guess he wont be really alone up there, with 2 other forwards on the pitch at the same time.

Interesting how Salas was not listed by Lippi, I guess he is leaving. Hopefully we get a good replacement

Zalayeta....showed good form at the end of the year. He is capable of playing against the lesser teams in Serie A, but what will happen when we play Milan, Inter and the other strong teams in the league and CL IF Trez was to be injured? :(

The only problem i see with this formation is the lack of width, we might see beautiful attractive football but soon teams might flood their defenses and then hardly any width except from the full backs could expose u too counter-attacks.....

hmmm that sounds familiar doesnt it...oh yes i remember now thats what happened to us this year

nonetheless with Juves experience and merciless professional way of playing, u ought to have things under-control a lot more than we did, i believe the word naive comes to mind with milans ferocious start
