My line-up:

----------------------Buffon--------------------

Zambrotta-----Barzagli-------Chiellini-------Grosso

-------De Rossi--------Pirlo--------Aquilani-------

Camoranesi-------------------------------Cassano
-----------------------Toni-----------------------

My team would be:

Buffon; Zambrotta, Gamberini, Chiellini, Grosso; De Rossi, Pirlo, Aquilani; Camoranesi (or Del Piero), Toni, Cassano.

If Donadoni starts Gattuso and Ambro instead of the Roma midfielders I will simply not watch this match.

----------------------Buffon--------------------

Zambrotta----Gamberini-------Chiellini-------Grosso

-------De Rossi--------Pirlo--------Aquilani-------

Camoranesi-------------------------------Cassano
-----------------------Toni----------------------

I never want to see barzagli, matrix partnership and ambro in the starting XI.

Well its simple really... one team finished 5th with that midfield, another finishes 2nd and one goes to the QF of the CL... and considering the current form of the players is the key... Donadoni was simply stupid to play all the players of the Milan midfield.

----------- Aquilani -- De Rossi
Camoranesi ------------------- Di Natale
-------------Del Piero/Cassano
------------------Toni

It's not been tested, but it couldn't get much worse than tonight at the same time.

Extension or not, Donadoni is gone if we get eliminated in the group stages. A sane man would make serious changes, but his moves in the 2nd half along with his starting line-up show this man may well put the same starting XI against Romania.

Interesting that everyone so far has chosen Cassano for the left attacking role. How about Del Piero? He got himself into two decent goalscoring opportunities today. The guy didnt finish top goalscorer for nothing. Not that I have anything against Cassano. Perhaps start him ahead of Camoranesi.

Also, it would be madness to consider starting Chiellini and Gamberini together.

-------De Rossi--------Pirlo--------Aquilani

Cassano-------------------------------Del Piero
----------------------Toni[/QUOTE]

This should definetly be your line-up for upcoming Romania game, but it won't be. Why? Because if Donadoni would think that problem tonight was in midfield, then he would make some changes in midfield and not in attack. IMO

right..realistic line-up

------------------Buffon

I will only totally blame Donadoni for keeping faith in too many old players, but seriously guys we need to be real... this team was never going to be good enough to win 2008... even with the intoduction of the Roma midfield and so on, it is too soon for the youngsters and too late for the old guys.

It would be unwise to just throw the duo of Chiellini and Gamberini together. I very much doubt Donadoni will do that anyway. Sure, Barzagli and Matrix didnt have the best game together but it's not a simple solution of throwing in two inexperienced centre backs that havent really played with each other. I think one should be changed.

#21 ·
Well Barzagli and Materazzi have little experience with each other, when played its been with Cannavaro... so IMO Gamberini and Chiellini would not be at all worse. Their individual abilities are better, so indeed it should be better. Maybe Panucci with one or the other is also a solution.

I would go with:

Toni
Di Natale-Cassano-Camoranesi
De Rossi-Pirlo
Grosso-Chiellini-Gamberini-Zambrotta
Buffon

Looking at how many men Romania put behind the ball today against France I'd say that we should play a bit more attacking.

I just don't think Italy can afford to start a must win game against a very resolute Romania side with three holding midfielders.
I can see the future now with it at 0-0 at HT and Donadoni clueless with what to do.

#24 ·
buffon
zambro gamberini chiellini grosso
de rossi pirlo aquilani
camo toni cassano

i still think del piero should start on the bench, bring him on and drop cassano behind toni and del piero later in the game. camo wont play 2 average games in a row.

#25 ·
Aquilani is clearly not a holding midfielder... and De Rossi has shown this season and last, that he has more talent than simply a holdming midfielder.

#28 ·
Toni is still a top class forward. One bad game, but he will be back.

#29 ·
I'm surprised that people want to drop Ambro ahead of Rino. The reason why Italy lost was the inability of its midfield to cover quick Dutch counters and the total incompetence of its CBs. Italy could've easily scored a couple of goals today, Grosso + Toni chances come to mind.

I would drop Rino for De Rossi and in fact I'm very surprised that De Rossi didn't start. Chiellini in for Materazzi is obvious and so too Grosso for Panucci. I'm not sure the attack needs too much tinkering either, whatever that you think Di Natale and Camo lacks they make up by workrate.

I want both Milan DMs to be dropped, we dont need either... especially against Romania.
