John Cruyff: 4-2-3-1 kills the excitement in football

Johan Cruyff, the football legend from Holland had an interview with Fifa magazine and explains the 4-2-3-1 system.

He talks about modern football and says the 4-2-3-1 system kills the excitement in the game. Although Brazil and Greece won the World Cup and European championship with this system and Brazil has lots of talented players, but it takes away a team's balance because by placing two players in front of defense it becomes difficult to control the midfield. So, when the team has possession it works well, but when the team loses the ball the team gets separated to two sections and becomes very easy for the opponent to start a counter-attack since without the ball these two defensive midfielders have to cover a very large gap!

He goes on to say that you can fix this problem by switching to a 4-3-3 system!

Johan Cruyff this and Johan Cruyff that... Blah blah blah.

4-2-3-1 doesn't suck because with two players in front of the defence you can't control the midfield, but because of playing only 1 striker. Unless said striker is a gun, it's really hard to score...

Cruyff is like talking to a group of children about Peter Pan..... and yea, the question of why he doesnt do something other than criticises this or that...

4231, which is another form of 4411 (wingers slightly backwards), does not make it offensive nor defensive, depends on the manner of play. When did Greece play 4231

say the Del Bosque Real Madrid, they were winning and scoring for fun. while the Crappatoni version for Italia, just sux.

Cruyff knows much more than we do, .......but to make such statement is exactly like what Jose's been talking about him. Do nothing.. just criticise.

Y isnt he coaching anyway...???

Il admit,I prefer attacking football, hate to much exesive defensiv soccer ...but sumtyms Uv got to neutralise the opposition...

I like 4-3-3.. or

4-4-2 with the midfield closer together almost plaing as 4-3-3 with the midfielder playing as attacking midfileder...

I say play the way U must provided Uv got the talent...aka Brazil...but Greece...WATAFLUKE!!!

So called European Champions...see what happens when U win a tournement and U ont have the talent/skills/personalel/exspertiese to defend your title and play as champions...hmmm

Cruyff knows what he says.

He has seen that Spanish teams used this tactic too much. And they became too predictable and the game too boring. All the teams in Spain with a phucking 4-2-3-1, like if they were forced to do it. There wasn´t imagination at all.

The team which best football has done in the last 7-8 years (Rijkaard´s Barça) plays with a 4-3-3. Is it casual?

I guess he says based on what he sees in La Liga. Some time ago, Del Bosque, Benítez and Irureta set this system here and it triumphed. They won titles here and in Europe with it.

Nowadays, this system became too predictable. Anyone who is playing with one striker and two DMs (for example Valencia) is miserably failing. These teams play bad football, slow, boring and I think that the teams learned how to stop it.

I think that Barça and Milan showed that you can play with only one DM and do it well. Many times the 2 DMs bother each other and kill their own spaces.

Aside that, there's a hidden criticism to Makelele-Essien, I think. I've heard the Spanish press making fun of them. Makelele never got so prasied here in Spain, he had the fame of an awful midfielder. That midfield is seen as 2 athletes that kick a ball. They're physically superior to anyone else, but when the result was down against Betis, they showed that they play nothing. Betis turned Lampard off and Chelsea was only a team able to push and pressure, but that's all.

I think Cruyff has a point there. Why do you need 2 pitbulls? One is more than enough, because when you need to have the ball to create some football and you have these 2 dogs, you're killing yourself. My view.

BTW, now Cruyff is talking about anything... he's been criticising Barça in this way since the day he retired in a weekly column in a newspaper. You'll get used to this. :D

imo, Cruyff is talking rubbish. Formation has nothing to do with how attacking a team is, thats down to how a manager employs the players in the formation. Some of the most entertaining sides I've seen in a long time were Reggina a couple of years ago, who played the 4-2-3-1. They had one recognized striker in Bonazzoli, then behind him there was Francesco Cozza, Nakamura and Di Michelele who all concentrated on attack. It was a joy to watch. Another one of my most favourite sides to watch was the Deportivo side of 2-3 seasons ago, what with Diego Tristan, Fran, Valeron etc They played 4-2-3-1 as well.

I don't think its the tactics that are ever the problems is whether a team has the right players in the right positions to make the best of the system , a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-2-1 are not inherently negative if the support is right on the wings, anyway in the premiership after everyone whinging about it being boring and moaning about the tactics ,most teams are playing 4-4-2 anyway.

On saturday the Dutch NT plays a friendly against Italy. 4-3-3 meets 4-2-3-1, we'll see what happens. ;)

Its not as if he's talking nonsense.;) What he's saying makes sense and he is the only one of that elite group of 5 players or so who are the greatest that has gone on to become a great manager as well. Yeah he's sick now so he can't manage, that takes away all his right to talk about the game?:rollani: Cruijff's football brain may have been one of the shrewdest of all time and he has his own particular philosophy about football, he can express that whether he's managing now or not.

And it may work for Chelsea and their fans, but 4-2-3-1 is a crap formation.

Johan Cruyff needs to show some respect, seriously after the 4-0 Milan thing why does he still talk?
So he losses one game and he can't talk anymore? Great idea, maybe Mourinho will stop:D

Great column though, I look forward to it every week. The guy always has something interesting (if sometimes off the wall) to say

As far as I know, Cruyff has more EC/CLs than Capello and Mourinho together... as if Capello had never lost a game. You can agree with him or not, but Cruyff will always be a valid voice in football. Besides, among the 4 big, I think he's the only one that didn't lose his head.

Cruyff is a legend but he seems to want top class football to be played like five a side. Football has always been about a variety of different teams playing a variety of different styles and tactics and that's why we love it. If everyone played the way Cruyff wants we'd have basketball scores.
