Tommorow we will have the draw in Switzerland of the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers.

All Israeli clubs are seeded in this stage (Hapoel Ramat Gan as cup winners will start in a later stage, but not seeded).

Maccabi Tel Aviv´s possible opponents:

Zeljeznicar (Bosnia)
Harfnafjadar (Iceland)
Gyor (Hungary)
The New Saints (Wales)

Not very known opponents, and whoever Maccabi gets in the draw they are favourites. Zeljeznicar are known to Maccabi, but last time we met we had comfortable win.
Maccabi going through in this stage it will have two more rounds to reach the group stage. Losing in the third round they still have a chance at the Europa League playoffs, if they reach the Champions League playoffs and lose they will automatically qualify to the Europa League Group Stage.

Rejkjavik (Iceland)
Dudelange (Luxembourg)
Senica (Slovakia)
Inter Turku (Finland)

Hodd (Norway)
Torshavn (Faroe Islands)
Rudar Plejlja (Montenegro)
TPS Turku (Finland)
Breidablik (Iceland)
Botev Plovdiv (Bulgaria)
Derry City (Ireland)

A few opponents very traditional in Europe, but still whoever Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Tel Aviv face they are favourites. If they confirm their edge Hapoel will go the other rounds seeded while Maccabi Haifa will go through the other two rounds unseeded.

Maccabi Tel Aviv Vs. Gyori ETO

First Leg: ETO Park,, Gyori, 16th or 17th of July

Second Leg: Bloomfield, Tel Aviv, 23rd or 24th of July

Gyori is one of toughest opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv could have got from this draw and despite the yellows being favourites they will need to be focused in order to go through. One of the advantages is that Paulo Sousa has recently worked in Hungarian football with Videoton and will know how to prepare better the team against them.

Gyori has won four Hungarian league titles and four Hungarian cups (this includes the double they made last season).

They have never played an Israeli opposition before and they hold a very respectable history reaching the European Cup semifinals in 1964/1965 season losing to Benfica. And the following season a quarterfinal finish at the Uefa Cup Winners Cup falling to Standard Liege.

Hapoel Tel Aviv Vs. Beroe Stara Zagora

The club has won the league title only once and holds two Bulgarian cups being the last season their second one. Despite an apparent low record the team is traditional in the country and has some European history especially in the late 70´s and early 80´s. The team had a gap in Europe since 1987 until 2011 where they fell at the 3QR to Rapid Wien. They return now to Europe because of the cup title as they finished 7th place in the league and should not pose much threat to Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Beroe has never played an Israeli opponent in European competitions.

Maccabi Haifa Vs. Sliema Wanderers or Khazar Lankaran

Maccabi Haifa waits for the winners of the game above. Sliema are the most prized team in Malta with 26 league titles and 20 cups, despite not winning any of them since 2009. Last season they finshed in third place.
They have played Maccabi Netanya in the 2009/2010 Europa League 2QR and lost 3-0 on aggregate.
Khazar Lankaran is also known to the Israelis as they played Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 2011/2012 Europa League 2QR and lost 3-1 on aggregate. The club was founded in 2004 and has a good financial support being since the beginning in good positions in the local league and eventually participating in Europe. The team has one Azerbaijan title and 3 cups.

All Israeli teams are favourites in their clashes, but Maccabi Tel Aviv has a tricky opponent and in the Champions League you never face easy opponents even on early stages.
Let´s hope for the best.

lol yeah but that was in 1960s when our league and football was still in world elite. ;) (even MTK reached a cup-winners cup final back then even though they were already a shadow of its former self)

Well, if there is something we shouldn´t do is to enter the game underestimating the opponent. In the Champions League there are no easy games and we are talking about a champion from a country here. Of course Maccabi has history in Europe as well participating in Champions League and Europa League Group Stage, but did we reach so far in Europe? Nope. Did the public ever here of Eran Zahavi, Eliran Atar or Shiran Yeini? Very few ones, so we too aren´t known. We can´t enter the game thinking it will be piece of cake, but we must understand of course that we have all the conditions to win this.
Plus, Maccabi started late their pre season at least in terms of organization. The new coach arrived only 3 days ago, two key players left and today the fitness coaches announced they are out. So we aren´t in a position of underestimating.

2 years ago I traveled to Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. You can rent a car in Budapest and It will take about 1 hour of driving to get to Gyor. If you have some time to spend, you can get a train or bus to get to Bratislava and Vienna. It will be really nice trip.

#13 ·
we are like 350-400 people from the organization who got their tickets already, dont think renting a car will be the thing for us... but yeah i guess we all gonna get us couple of bus'es or something, i just dont know anyone there who we can contact with, a bit unkown place for people in israel..

#14 ·
Just contact to Budapest Jewish community which are about 50 000 people. Also many Israeli tourists come to Budapest each once in a while. And Gyor is not that big town something like 100,000 people so you certainly will not lost there.

Győr has a fast railway connection with Budapest (the fastest in Hungary), taking as little as 1 hour 15 minutes. InterCity and RailJet trains run this route. Győr is also easily reachable by train from the surrounding countries: from Bratislava (Slovakia) and from Vienna (Austria) (in one and a half hour). Buses start from Budapest, Nepliget (Central bus station of Budapest) nearly every hour, for example, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00... There is also a bus at least once a day from Vienna and Bratislava.

Apparently , it will take about half our to get from Budapest International Airport to Nepliget (Central bus station of Budapest), and another one and a half hour to get to ETO Park stadium which located at Nagysándor József Street, Győr.

How many tickets are available for Maccabi fans?
Guess that if it is possible there will be a good presence in Hungary.
Maybe some MTK fans that are from the Jewish community could give an assist or guidance as well.

What do you guys think of Israeli teams chances in Europe? I think Hapoel and Maccabi Tel Aviv should qualify to at least the europa league. Maccabi Haifa is not seeded in the play-offs so they need some luck... And hapoel ramat gan......Would be great if they get a win or a draw, unlikely though.

#24 ·
Well, it won´t be easy. Hapoel Tel Aviv will most likely reach the Europa League Group Stage as they will be seeded in every stage and should be favourites in all their games. Maccabi Haifa will be seeded until the 3rd round after that they might not face an easy opponent so it all depends on the draw.
As for Maccabi Tel Aviv, they should pass against Gyor, later they won´t be seeded. If they lose they will still got a chance in the Europa League playoffs, so they got a good chance to at least going to the Group Stage.

Ramat Gan will need a miracle to go through. Any little coefficient point they earn will already be welcomed.

This is the last season where the 09/10 counts. That was our best season in the last years where our teams had a total of 7.250. We must at least try to make our best here this season in order not to drop too much. If we have a good season like that one we still have a slim chance to have representatives in the Champions League next season.

Im hoping Maccabi TLV can do some damage...cause seriously....they got the money to buy good players and do some real impact.....

Hapoel Tel Aviv...only a legacy..
Maccabi Haifa is good..

but thats about it...

Khazar Lankaran I wouldn't say improved in last years but they got John Toshack as their coach, and this summer, he improved team's offense. It will be interesting to see, how Khazar will hold against Haifa

#22 ·
John Toshack was a coach of Macedonia NT with Goran Pandev , Napoli striker. And Macedonia NT didn't produce much. With all respect to Khazar Lankaran , Haifa really should reach group stage in League Europe.

#23 ·
with all the respect to lankran, Maccabi haifa should pass easily to the next stage.
Azeri teams are still not good enough to compete israeli ones.
we saw it last year with Baku against Kiryat Shmone and with Maccabi against Lankran 2 years ago..

Maccabi Tel Aviv kept most of their players. From the starting lineup only Atar and Enyeama left. So i guess we won´t have many changes, maybe Mana on the leftback instead of Ziv. Colinas at the expense of Enyeama and Itzhaki in Atar´s place.

Maccabi Haifa changed especially in attack. Guess they will find some other player upfront. Maybe Arbeitman.

As for Hapoel Tel Aviv we have the arrival of Shechter a whole new defense. Certainly the reds will be stronger this season. If any surprises happen they will be in the Europa League Group Stage since they will be seeded in all rounds.

#45 ·
In the beginning of the new season when some players could be far from their best, any surprises could be seen in starting lineups. I wouldn't surprised at all to see Rade Prica as a substitution player.

While the focus is on Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel are preparing for the match on Thursday against Beroe from Bulgaria.

Probable lineup practiced by Ran Ben Shimon:

Dani Amos; Orel Dagani, Jurgen Colin, Branko Ilic, Shimon Harush; Brian Gerzicich, Roy Gordana, Lucas Sacha, Israel Zaguri; Omer Damari, Itay Shechter.

So far there are some surprising results in Champions League qualifications.
Viktoria Plzen beat Zeljeznicar 4 - 3 , so Bosnians need just 1-0 victory at home to pass Czechs. BATE Borisov lost 0 - 1 to Shakhter Karagandy in Minsk, and Kazakhstan champion only need goalless draw at home to reach next round. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Maccabi TA!

#49 ·
I'm glad you brought these up. For all the talk about Maccabi getting a tough draw, other seeded teams had a tough draw too. The Kazahk and Bulgarian champs are no pushovers either.

Viktoria Plzen will still advance but its surprising to see such a team who advanced to the EL knockout stage two years in a row have trouble with the Bosnian champs. On the other hand, another very good club BATE is in serious trouble.

What a weak team MTA is right now......
so slloooooooooooow

#55 ·
what are you talking about? maccabi looked amazing. playing like that in away game in europe is amazing.
they pressured the hungarians the whole game, and didnt let them pass, or do anything.

Mikha, Ithzaki and ofcourse Altman looked great!

Maccabi controlled the match and had a lot of opportunities to score. I'm glad they got that second goal because they deserved it.

Gyor played with a lot of energy in the beginning and had a goal called back for offsides but as the match went on the gap in skill between the two clubs became apparent. Maccabi created opportunities and Gyor couldn't sustain an attack when they had the ball. Gyor had an amazing chance to score at the end when Maccabi's defense lost track of their men and a Gyor player was by himself and couldn't convert the header. After that Gyor succumbed to the quickness of Maccabi's players and couldn't keep up with them, which is what led to the second goal.

Zahavi and Itzhaki played the best. Zahavi is so dangerous when he has the ball with space in front of him. I especially liked how Sousa played for the win when it was 0-0 late in the match. They looked very good and they will only get better.
