Apparently it means he's a Nazi because the fascist government in Croatia which possibly was even in power there at some point in time also used to yell "For the homeland!" a lot. at least that's FIFA's logic here. :rollani:

Not saying I'm an expert on this but it seems completely ridiculous...I'd like to see how FIFA proves it was not simply a patriotic gesture?

Anyway, I'd like to hear Croatian opinions/explanations about it. Is Simunic really pro-Nazi, have there been other events which point to it? And is this chant seen as fascist or simply patriotic/nationalistic in Croatia?

And also 10 matches? Had he broke somebody's foot or kicked somebody in the teeth on purpose he'd get 5-6 matches at most.

Insane stuff.

who the hell has even heard of Croatian fascism anyway?

almost 70 years have passed and Western Europe is still obsessed with this shite.

found this on wiki:

In 2011, a court in Knin dismissed the case against a craftsman who sold souvenirs which contained the salute Za dom spremni. The court ruled that accused didn't wear clothing or souvenirs with slogan that encourage national, racial or religious hatred, but instead he was selling them. While the former is punishable by law, the latter is not. The court ruling cited that "Za dom spremni is an old Croatian salute known throughout history" as a part of defense statement, yet it didn't state any opinion on a subject.

yeah but Simunic is an Aussie Bosnian, maybe he doesn't know all this historical stuff and simply yelled for his homeland :D

ok probably not...

still, I'd like to hear Croatian opinions about this.

It seems that FIFA has a case because in fact Simunic was fined for it in Croatia not by a sports organisation but the prosecutor's office itself:

For this incident Šimunić was fined 25,000 kunas by the Croatian State Attorney's Office for inciting racial hatred and harassment of other participants of a public gathering

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I feel it's somehow ****ed up that yelling "For Home!" will be legally interpreted as "inciting racial hatred"...even in this historical context.

Stupid? Yes. Racist? No.

I don't think that Šimunić is neonazi or that he had anything like that on his mind. He's just... a footballer. Fine is alright as it opens the place for Lovren who is five times the player that Šimunić is today. Shame that Šimunić will miss the world cup as he would be great backup but he did it to himself. Should have kept his mouth closed. Now his so far spotless and successful career will have one giant nono over it. Shame to end it like that.

Whether or not the punishment is suitable he got what he knew was coming when he did it if he is not a complete retard. And if he is the punishment is suitable for stupidity. Everybody knows how FIFA reacts to such things in comparison to hard fouls etc. So being surprised now is weird at best.

FIFA hypocrites again. Šimunić gets punished for being "discriminatory" and offending "the dignity of a group of persons concerning ... race, religion or origin", but only days before this verdict Blatter was praising commie terrorist Mandela. So Blatter can abuse his position to spread political views and praise certain political figures but Šimunić can't?

Shouting a faschist chant on purpose is retiring in style and being a hero? (was one thing feigning ignorance) Wait why am I replying to you after reading your first post in this thread? :D

You eager to sweep this under the rug Andy :D This nkm guy is saying Simunic should be allowed to share his political views (aka far right wing or faschism), he isnt saying he should be allowed to make a simple and innocent patrotic plea, that wouldnt be a political viewpoint persé.

Where was he "sharing his political views?" Is yelling "For the homeland" spreading a political view now? Balkan nationalism can not be simplified to the extent you or FIFA are proposing. It can't simply be reduced to the glorification of some old Nazi puppet state whenever a Croatian is yelling these words. I'm well aware of this because of my background...nationalism is intervened with the reinterpretation of WWII history too but there is always an unique context to it in every country.

Also who says political views can't be shared just because these are far right wing? So you have one law of free speech for the ultranationalists/right wing extremists and another law of free speech for all the other citizens? There are all kinds on insulting and ridiculous political views shared all over Europe every day but for some reason only one group gets punished and stigmatized for it, due to the collective guilt still inhabiting the Western European unconscious. And they write laws for us in EE as well while they hardly could give a shit of all the countless communist crimes because this is "someone else's problem".

Za Dom Spremni is a chant over 500 years old. As Croatian court already ruled Za Dom Spremni is not a fascist chant but a nationalistic chant. The communist government in Croatia has been on a anti nationalism raid ever since Croatia has tried to get into the EU. Za Dom Spremni has been chanted at every Croatia game since 1990 but only recently has it been a problem and deemed fascist/rascist. A coincidence i think not. When your countries minister of sports is a Serb has been pushing for this ban well what else needs to be said. Simunic you are a legend. Za Dom Spremni.:proud:
