Italy v Croatia background from UEFA.com

Having drawn 1-1 at UEFA EURO 2012, Italy and Croatia do battle again in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group H, with Croatia unbeaten in six against the Italians.

Italy are without a win in their last six matches against Croatia, with an encounter in Poznan at UEFA EURO 2012 sure to add some spice to this latest meeting.

• Italy's seven matches against Croatia have ended W1 D3 L3 (W1 D0 L2 in Italy, W0 D2 L0 in Croatia), with two of those matches at final tournaments: the 1-1 draw at UEFA EURO 2012 and a 2-1 win for Croatia at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Ibaraki, Japan.

• Italy's sole win against Croatia was a 4-0 victory in Genoa on 5 April 1942.

• At UEFA EURO 2012, Mario Mandžukić (72) pounced to level for Slaven Bilić's Croatia after an Andrea Pirlo free-kick (39) had put Cesare Prandelli's side 1-0 up in the group stage fixture, the second between the two sides.

• The teams for that match on 14 June 2012 were:
Italy: Buffon, Maggio, Chiellini, Motta (Montolivo 62), Marchisio, Balotelli (Di Natale 69), Cassano (Giovinco 83), Giaccherini, De Rossi, Bonucci, Pirlo.
Croatia: Pletikosa, Strinić, Ćorluka, Rakitić, Vukojević, Jelavić (Eduardo 83), Modrić, Srna, Schildenfeld, Mandžukić (Kranjčar 90+4), Perišić (Pranjić 68).

• Croatia also met Giovanni Trapattoni's Italy in their second group stage match at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Ivica Olić (73) and Milan Rapaić (76) overturning Christian Vieri's 55th-minute opener to give Mirko Jozić's side a 2-1 win.

• Their only other competitive meetings came in EURO '96 qualifying. Miroslav Blažević's Croatia beat Arrigo Sacchi's Italy 2-1 in Palermo on 16 November 1994, Davor Šuker (32 and 57) striking twice before Dino Baggio (89) reduced the defecit for the home side. The sides drew 1-1 in the return fixture in Split on 8 October 1995, Šuker (48) cancelling out Demetrio Albertini's opener (29).

• Italy have had the better of their 12 meetings with Croatia in UEFA's youth and age-limit competitions: W7 D4 L1.

• Results between Serie A sides and Croatian sides in UEFA club competitions have been less one-sided than might be expected; the Italian clubs' record is W15 D9 L5. Those do not include ten encounters in the non-UEFA affiliated Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, in which the Italian clubs' record was W5 D4 L1.

Here are some pre-match stats:

Italia (WWWWLL) is 4-2-0 and coming off a 1-0 win over Malta who played with 10 men for over 60' (Italia played with 10 for the final 15+ minutes and CB Bonucci will miss the Hrvatska match due to that red card). Another win was a 2-0 Friendly over 10 men Netherlands as well as two Qualifier wins @ Norway (2-0) and vs Azerbaijan (2-1). Hrvatska (WWWWWL) is also 5-1-0 in it's last 6 games, and will look to continue their fine form since EURO 2016 Qualifying have begun. Will Hrvatska manage to keep yet another clean sheet? Can Hrvatska keep it's unbeaten record against Italia? Will Italia finally be defeated at the San Siro? Also new NT Coach Conte has recalled Ballotelli to the Italia squad who will be missing MFs Pirlo & Veratti due to injury and CB Bonucci due to red card vs Malta

Interesting stat: Italia's Top 3 passers in Qualifying so far have been CBs (and 4 of their Top 5), compare that to Hrvatska with 3 of it's Top 5 passers being in the midfield, and 1 more being RB & Captain Darijo Srna. Gathered those tidbits from here:

Looking at that map...never knew Algeria and Tunisia were that close to Cro

Btw....why won't a big game like this be shown on ESPN/ESPN2?? They've been showing international games the past 2 months and no offense to Slovakia...but if their game vs Spain was on there then this one should be on there as well.

edit: BiH vs Belgium was shown when they played too

guys, I dont care who Italy has out there..its going to be tough....

We just need to play our game...looking for Mandzo to come big in this one. Luka needs to pull the strings. He will be the best player on the field, and he needs to perform and take this game over. As he goes, so will we in this one. Hope he delivers.

I do worry about Balotelli giving Corluka and Lovren all kinds of problems. At Euro, Balotelli was running wild as our guys were backing off of him...and then Balottelli if I recall also won (cheaply I might add) the free kick that Pirlo scored on...have to be super careful with this guy but not get sucked into cards/fouls or getting burned by giving too much space. He might be having a brutal start with Liverpool this year, but the guy is a talent and has size/strength/speed that will exploit Corluka...

Super sub Olic will also deliver I think like he did 12 years ago vs the Italians.

Cant wait for this one. Lets face it, with top 2 teams qualifying, win/lose we still pretty much will qualify, so this is a great test to just go for it without fear.

We are Croatia.:proud:

The way things went last night Rijeka will probably sell a few more than just Kramaric this winter transfer window - thinking first of Leskovic, a very promising and composed young central defender that paired with Jedvaj last night did a very solid job vs one of the most attacking teams in the world! If Rijeka sold Sharbini though, that would be quite something, this guy is a bit of a mystery at 27 and still playing HNL, his talent is not doubtful, his application and attitude probably is!

has nobody done a IP check on him yet? The guy has been here for a month yet has started fights in multiple forums and happens to 'know' everybody's prior 'histories'

I have my suspicions on who it is and its quite sad...

Some make fun of me for having 50K+ posts, but at least I never opened up multiple accounts, not smart enough to even know how

Boban backs Croatia to defend post-war Italy record

MILAN: Former AC Milan forward Zvonimir Boban has backed Croatia to defend an impressive 72-year record against Italy when the sides meet in a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier in Milan on Sunday.

Italy's last victory over Croatia came months before the country entered World War II - when Vittorio Pozzo's side ran out 4-0 winners at Genoa's Luigi Ferraris stadium in April 1942.

In their six meetings since then, Croatia have won three and drawn three against the four-time world champions.

Boban, now a respected football pundit for Italy's Sky Sport channel, believes the 3-5-2 formation used by Italy coach Antonio Conte has its limits and could be exploited by Niko Kovac's side.

"It will be a tactical, difficult and physical game. It will probably end in a draw," the 46-year-old Boban, who won the 1994 Champions League and four league titles in a nine-year spell with Milan, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Teams suffer when they resort to a 3-5-2 at international level, you end up defending too deep. Conte's is the best 3-5-2 ever, but you fall victim if you come up against wingers that are strong."

Croatia are top of Euro 2016 qualifying Group H after three wins. Italy also have three wins and sit second on goal difference.

Boban promised: "We'll put Italy in difficulty. But it should be a 50-50 game. Strange, as usually it was 80-20. I'm sorry for you, but happy for Croatia."

Boban captained the Croatia team that battled to third place at the 1998 World Cup in France on what was their debut in the competition as an independent nation.

He retired in 2002, when Croatia beat Italy 2-1 at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Four years later, goals by Eduardo and Luka Modric made the difference as Croatia beat Italy 2-0 in a friendly in Palermo.

Boban said of Sunday's game: "A repeat of 2006 will be difficult", then added: "But then again, it seemed difficult back then."

Italy and Croatia drew 1-1 in their last meeting, at Euro 2012, where the Azzurri were beaten finalists in Poland and Ukraine against Spain (4-0).

I just re-watched this game the other day as I am re-watching all the Cro v Italia games in chronological order as a build up to the match on Sunday and it was great to get even more backstory to the match!
