In two games we qualified for the Quarter Finals, won the group and showed an impressive composure that leaves so much hope for what's left in this tournament.

Group A
1 PORTUGAL .......2G 2W 0D 0L 5-1 6P QF
2 Turkey .............2G 1W 0D 1L 2-3 3P
2 Czech Republic ...2G 1W 0D 1L 2-3 3P
4 Switzerland .........2G 0W 0D 2L 1-3 0P

The last game is meaningless for both teams so who will rest and who will play? Should Scolari keep the core group to go on giving consistency to the team or should he rest key players that have behind them a very tiring club season?

UEFA.com's match preview...

Switzerland primed for Portugal finale
UEFA EURO 2008 co-hosts Switzerland complete their Group A programme against Portugal in Basel in what will be the countries' first meeting at a major tournament.

• For Switzerland, much-fancied Portugal could provide their toughest test of the first round, given the impressive recent finals performances of Luiz Felipe Scolari's charges, who finished runners-up at UEFA EURO 2004 and reached the last four at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

• In addition to their impressive pedigree this past decade, Portugal can also take confidence from an unbeaten record in their last six matches against the Swiss.

• The sides crossed swords most recently in qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Although Switzerland eventually progressed to the finals in the United States, Portugal got the better of their contests by earning a 1-1 draw in Berne in March 1993 and then defeating them 1-0 in Porto seven months later through a ninth-minute goal from João Pinto.

• Switzerland's last victory against Portugal came in a friendly in Lugano in March 1982, when goals from Gianpietro Zappa (42 minutes) and André Egli (62) earned them a 2-1 win.

• The first ever meeting between the teams was a play-off in Milan for a place in the first round of the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Switzerland won 2-1, thereby forcing Portugal to wait another 28 years for their debut appearance on the world stage.

• Overall Switzerland have won six, drawn five and lost eight of their 19 matches against Portugal. However, their home record against the Portuguese provides more favourable reading, with five wins, three draws and only two losses.

• Switzerland goalkeeper Diego Benaglio spent two and a half seasons with Portuguese Liga team CD Nacional, before joining Germany's VfL Wolfsburg during the January winter break.

• Switzerland midfielder Gelson Fernandes and Portugal pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani are on opposite sides of Manchester's blue-red divide with their respective clubs Manchester City FC and Manchester United FC.

• Portugal defender Fernando Meira is a team-mate of Switzerland's Ludovic Magnin at VfB Stuttgart and also played alongside forward Marco Streller at the Bundesliga club.

• Switzerland's Xavier Margairaz played in the same midfield as Hugo Viana at Spanish club side CA Osasuna in the 2007/08 season.

• Switzerland defender Patrick Müller and Portugal midfielder Tiago were team-mates at Olympique Lyonnais from 2006 to 2007.

• As a player with FC Zürich, Switzerland coach Jakob Kuhn was on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat at Sporting Clube de Portugal in a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final first-leg tie in 1973/74. Kuhn missed the return as Zürich went down 4-1 on aggregate.

• Switzerland's Johan Vonlanthen holds the record for being the tournament's youngest goalscorer. He was 18 years and 140 days old when he found the net in the 3-1 defeat by France on 21 June 2004.

• Switzerland were led at EURO '96™ by Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, who later had a spell in charge of the Portugal national team.

• This is Switzerland's third UEFA European Championship finals appearance, following two previous first-round exits in 1996 and 2004.

• Portugal's best performance in four previous appearances came at UEFA EURO 2004, where they finished runners-up.

• Three teams have won the UEFA European Championship as hosts. Spain and Italy triumphed in 1964 and 1968 respectively, when staging the semi-finals and final. France in 1984 became the only winners since a proper final tournament was established in 1980.

• This is the 13th edition of the UEFA European Championship and the eighth edition that features a final tournament with a group phase.

I've said it before and stick by it... I think Cristiano will play. He desperately wants to, this is his tournament, he's in peak physical condition. I want him to start.

pun said in another thread that Pepe and Carvalho need to both start and continue developing their chemistry. I totally agree.

My XI:

Ricardo
Miguel - Pepe - R.Carvalho - J.Ribeiro
R.Meireles - M.Veloso
J.Moutinho
C.Ronaldo ------ R.Quaresma
H.Almeida

Second half; bring on Nani for Ronaldo, Postiga for Almeida, and finally Meira for Moutinho late in the game.

what are the chances that Portugal will take this game seriously with their A team out there? do U think the match will be rigged and Swizterland will have the ref completely on their side???

Every game is to be taken seriously, but I can assure you that at least a couple of the starting XI players will be rested.

do U think the match will be rigged and Swizterland will have the ref completely on their side???
I don't know.

#13 ·

Please give us Germany in the quarters after that ass whippin' they put on us in WC '06 (third place game).

I'd love to knock them out the tournament.

From Scolari's press conference today:

- Exact quote: "Portugal would beat Holland." :D
- Exact quote: "If we lose tomorrow, it's my fault."
- There will be 5/6 changes in the starting XI tomorrow.
- Nuno Gomes will for sure not start, and has a "99.9% chance" of not featuring at all tomorrow. Obviously, one of Hugo/Helder to start, and the other to come on in the second half.
- Ricardo will start.

MaisFutebol got the scoop before it has been announced officially, so here it is what seems to be our line-up for tonight's game:

Ricardo

Miguel - Bruno Alves - Pepe - Paulo Ferreira

Fernando Meira - Miguel Veloso

RaĂşl Meireles

Nani ----------------- Quaresma

HĂ©lder Postiga

Scolari going really for the B team, only leaving Ricardo P. Ferreira and Pepe from the previous starting XIs.

poor game of ours so far...if there were any doubts, this is really our B team

nani is annoying me in particular, with his diving, whinning and lack of understanding of what team play means

ricardo had one great saving and a couple embarassing moments

miguel is attacking well, but needs to shape up in defense

raul meireles and miguel veloso are sleeping in our midfield

paulo ferreira, no comments

postiga is working hard, though he needs to stay himself away from the offside positon, even if the goal he scored wasnt offside

and quaresma....is he playing? he had a terrific cross to postiga, early in the game, after that he went missing

meira, pepe and bruno alves arent compromising so far

very very tepid game, showing scolari that he chose his A team well

I really hope Hollands 2nd team plays better then yours.

Where the hell has Quaresma been the whole game. Nani seems to get it constantly while it never seems to go down Quaresma's side. I do hate Nani a lot. Has to be in that annoying players thread.

and the swiss score, its deserved for their efforts

appart from the goal that postiga scored, and wasnt offside, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Very poor display so far

#51 ·
yep, for all who keep asking why nani and quaresma dont start, here it is why

and now quaresma, not to be left behind nani, also misses a goal in the face of the swiss goalie lol anyone can miss, but one has to at least give it a try with a good full shot, something like hakan yakin did pfffftt
