I would say Del Piero was more talented, but Rooney an all around better player due to not being a grandfather, but still, not at the same champion level of Del Piero.

Rooney always is more of a support player while Del Piero killed teams on his own even at 34 years old.

for me del piero is better because rooney isn't a leader

Del Piero at his best (pre 98 injury) was better than Rooney. Obviously if you asking about this moment then there is clearly only one answer.

No it's not because everyone tends to get nostalgic and the older player is better in everyone's memory than he actually ever was, and the younger player hasn't been been allowed the time to achieve as much in the game so he won't have made as much of an impression. And there's no way you can just cut 10 years of Del Piero out of your mind; you can't just say forget Del Piero from 25 to now because those ten years will still influence you no matter how much you might try to put them out of your mind.

If you're ever going to compare players it's best to do it when both have been retired for a considerable amount of time.

Random thread, but excuse to post this :proud: ;)

No because as I said I do not care about the latter years of Del Piero. In fact I remember him pre 98 very well, enough so to not even think of him since then and still make a valid judgement of what Del Piero was like at or before Rooney's age.

I understand the point, but with DP it is different. It is not as if we are comparing him to Totti who remained consistent in performances over a long period of time. Del Piero was a different player pre 98 to what he was after.

Well we'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't think it's possible to to remember a player during one part of their career without being influenced by another part, it's because of the later part - the poorer/lesser part - that you're so fond of the earlier part, in my opinion and you'll rate the player as being better during the earlier part than he actually was.

Could it be that we started to finally know Del Piero's greatness after seeing the lesser side of his? Messi is giving jaw-breaking performances left and right these days, and despite comfortably being regarded as the world's best, the accolades he gets today will still be unmatched by what he may receive after he retires or after his form dips.
Ditto Ronaldinho. He was greatly acclaimed in 05, 06, but when we look back at what he used to be compared to what he is now (and also compared to the levels reached by the so called great players these days), we further deify the Ronaldinho of 05 or 06 as some kind of (mythical) nearly-unstoppable, indestructible force.
Don't know if I am musing your tune, but a little thing I wanted to point.

Maybe not now, but in the future he will be better than Rooney ;) Maybe not as classy as Del Piero, because Del Piero is one of the best strikers to ever live.

But then again, you wouldn't know how good Muller is... just like you probably didn't know how good Mesut Ozil was until he moved to Real Madrid. I'll just keep quiet now and let Muller speak for me.

Your posts are just so annoying lol.. just a quick newsflash to ya, Muller won the Golden boot in the recent world cup and best young player of the world cup, and had a career season last year with Bayern Munich reaching and playing the CL final.

You're not gonna 'let Muller speak for you' cause he has already spoken.. get off your high horse, you're not the Nostradamus of football talents, not even close.. you just say obviuse things that are known to alot of people in a way that makes you think you're a pioneer and the one who knew he's gonna be a star since he was 6 years old... hardly something to be proud of... what a joke.

in this thread i am referring to the hunched-back del piero of post-98. obviously not the one of this year or last year

he kept his leadership and set-piece ability

i don't see rooney as the go-to guy even though Man Utd need him to be. with Del Piero, he could work some magic on his own, he also wins his own freekicks (more fairly than Nedved :pp)

[When you say "go-to guy" do you mean in the creative/pulling the strings sense or in the goal-scoring sense?]

Even me as a guy who loved Muller since September of last year, and was all over him thinking he's a fantastic player and gonna be a great one, I didn't and i'm sure no one else including Muller himself, think that he would have that type of world cup thos making him such high reputation and status in the football world.

Ontop of his skill and ability which he obviusly has, he has alot of luck.. thats not something you can predict... and without those goals in WC, and I say goals cause if he played like he did and didn't score 50% of the people wouldn't talk about him right now, it wouldn't have turned as it is.

If you take time to watch Muller play, you would realize that his goals aren't just luck. Sometimes I don't pay attention to his goals. What I think is 3 times more impressive than the goals he scores is the performance he displays on the pitch. IMO, he's Bayern Munich's best player... well... it's a tough tie between him, Schweni, Lahm, and Robben. He's certainly the most productive though.

No not at all, just that you seem like a lost case, I mean all you really need/want/aim for is people telling you " WOW you're right, wow dude how did you know, wow man you're awesome you should be a scout" - if they won't it won't end... also always seems like you know everything and 'letting others know' or implying as if they're not aware of the stuff you are...you have this 'me agaisnt the world' attitude I dislike.

So i'm being the bigger man, you can have your last word and enjoy, but in all your predictions and expectations from players its just stating the obviuse, and it usually happens after these guys put a fantastic preformece and not when the guy is an unknown.

Have fun.
