I have to say Santos was a shadow of the great team of earlier this year. Their form has been dipping for sometime now. Cienciano is a mediocre team but they played with heart and resolve. They played a man down for the entire second half and not even then Santos could crack their defense. It took a rocket of a shot by Robinho to beat Ibañez. Alex own goal was simply surreal.

The return leg at 3600 meters high Cuzco, should see the Peruvians through to the semis.

Also some food for thought, I believe Robinho plays better when Diego is off the pitch. Some of the best games I have seen him play has been when Diego was not in the line up. He took over this game after Diego was subbed and carried the team.

Altitude proves to be tough to some, and not so tough to others (SP played in altitude too right?)

 

since Santos did keep some pressure in the end of game i would say the attitude was a minor factor - the upcoming game with Corinthians weekend - very important game for Santos in the chase after Cruzeiro played a bigger role in my opinion.(bad note: Renato left the field early injuried)

Cienciano played very well. i would say it was their best game ever. Santos did very little to deserve anything than what they got. i agree that altitude was not the main reason of this result. Cienciano just played better on this night.


Congrats to Cienciano, now they await the winner of Boca vs Atletico Nacional.

 

Also what a great a goal by Elano. Also carty's was pretty good too.
