Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is chasing his former Porto midfielder Maniche.

Michael Essien's commitments to Ghana's African Nations Cup campaign and concerns over Claude Makelele's fitness has convinced Mourinho he needs cover in central midfield.

The says Mourinho wants to sign Portugal international Maniche from Dynamo Moscow during next month's market.

Maniche has been told he can leave Dynamo, even though he only moved to Moscow in the summer. Atletico Madrid have reportedly agreed terms with the player, but Chelsea are aiming to outbid their Spanish rivals to land the midfielder

I think this is a possitive step. Claude wont play forever and this season has seen him with injuries.Maniche is for the future and he'l be reunited with his fav coach. He was TOTaLY unhappy about the russian move and in all honesty he ddnt have choice about it. Roman has his connections so I think its a matter of time really.

What think yee fellas...?

Tribal is an unworthy source of any info.

Still.... Essien would have to be back eventually and Manich just wouldnt expect himself to be benching all the time. while Jarosik could still be Recalled.

EPL is already sealed. So I suppose there is no need. Makelele will still be covered by young Diarra.

Against Barcelona, would be key. JM might use any of these 3 for Essien.

Geremi... Utlitly Man. Defensively Solid.
Gudjohnsen... Pro-Attacking, unpredictable.
JCole... He can play CM, as Duff-Robben-SWP-Gud can fill the wing/forward.

i guess

adriano jarosik was sold,,he cant be recalled...diarra is good enough to fill the gaps , geremi is excellent besides gudju is good enough to play in midfield, so maniche rumours r rubbish...

excellent at what ? because it's not football.
I remember him being quite good at freekicks but its been ages since he played properly so I might be confusing him with someone else. :D

Maniche has been a shadow of himself ever since Mourinho left FC Porto. He gained weight like crazy, and started to suffer injurys one after the other.
If that wasn't enough, the man has no character. Porto gave him everything, yet he wasn't happy until he left (because he had a child to take care  ). After being in Russia for a couple of months, he started being disrespectful to Dinamo, asking to leave once again.

When in shape, he can take his place in almost any team, but that has yet to happen since Mourinho left.
Chelsea, and Mourinho, would be a great choice for him, if he accepted his place in the team and sometimes in the bench.
If not, I think ManU would gain much in signing him, for example.

I used to quite like him at Boro, but standing out at Boro obviiously isn't that difficult, he did hit some nice free kicks and also some nice passes and crosses.
he had a spell at right back last season and proved more solid than both johnson and ferreria..he came in this season a substitute at DM when claude was injured, plus he scored the winning goal against southampton i think, personally i like to see him at right back much more than seeing useless glen...

Lucky for him, Scolari runs the NT like a club. He rarely changes players unless they are injured.
So, if Maniche doesn't gets hurt bad, he will be in the WC.
As for Tiago, he got a few more minutes in the last couple of games, but again, there were some injuries, so we'll have to wait and see if he really got is place on the starting 11.

Looks as if it's confirmed. Very good move for Maniche. I doubt he'll ride bench too long, he was one of Mourinho's golden-boys.

Chelsea have agreed a deal for Portugual international Nuno Maniche, according to Portuguese sources.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid looked to have won the race for Maniche - who is unsettled at Dinamo Moscow and looks almost certain to quit the club in January just six months after joining them.

However, Chelsea now look to have stepped in a struck a quick deal with both Maniche and Dinamo.

Manchester United were also thought to be in the running, but they have other priorities in Russia -with Nemanja Vidic of Spartak Moscow looking likely to move to Old Trafford in the next week.

Maniche is an especially attractive option for Jose Mourinho as he is available for Europe, but the Chelsea boss also knows him well from their time together at Porto and will have no qualms about adding him to his Stamford Bridge squad.

Portuguese reports claim that Maniche will complete his move in mid-January, giving him time to overcome an injury he is currently struggling with.

Chelsea close to deal on Maniche

Maniche is expected to link up again with Jose Mourinho, whom he played under at Benfica and Porto.

The 28-year-old could join on loan until the end of the season, when Chelsea will have a £5m option to buy.

Dynamo sports director Boris Ignatiev said: "Talks with Chelsea are continuing but we're in the last parts of negotiations."

Mourinho would see Maniche as ideal cover for Michael Essien, who is set to miss at least three games while on duty for Ghana in the African Nations Cup.

The Chelsea boss is an admirer of Maniche, and made him captain at Benfica, before the two were re-united at Porto where they won the Uefa Cup and the Champions League.

Maniche is also full of admiration for Mourinho's coaching abilities.

The Portugal international said last year: "He's the best coach I've worked under.

"He became more of a friend than a boss and I've never seen that kind of closeness from another coach in all the years I've been a footballer."

It must be tough for Chelsea, imagine having to struggle through January with only Makelele, Lampard, Duff, Diarra, Robben, Cole, SWP, Geremi, Gudjohsen (who plays their sometimes) and Jarosik/Smertin on loan while Essien is on international duty.
