Are Roma playing the modern version of "total football"??

Entertaining side, plays in an unconventional formation with no out & out striker. Mancini & Wilhelmsson's bursts down either flanks aided by the runs made by Totti, Perotta & Taddei from their own half. For most of the players there is no fixed position(apart from the centre-backs, maybe) & even Totti comes down to his own half to get the ball. CBs like Chivu & Mexes capable of attacking & even scoring occasionally. Is this the modern version of "total football"??

Normally we play with Pizarro instead of Wilhelmsson and Pizarro does what Totti was mainly doing yesterday and we let Totti stay more upfront... however our formation and style of play is very unique and very balanced.

No, they are a very good side but beating a very poor in europe Man U does not mean they are playing total foortball.

Arsenal & Barca play total football.

Sort of. I read something by Parriera that he forsaw a formation that had six midfielders and no forwards with the midfielders making runs off each other. That's kind of what Roma do now.

Total Football was where any player could fulfill any role on the field as needed and another player would fill his spot. So defenders attacked and Forwards defended etc. I guess this Roma idea is pretty close.

Does Arsenal really play total football? They do pass the ball very well, but it normally results in not shooting which isnt really the idea of total football :smileani:

I really rate Roma and I think they are one of the best teams in Europe even before we drew them in the Quarters, but they didn't fully take advantage of facing a depleted United defence and we played with 10 men.

I dread to think what would happen had we faced Barca or Arsenal in that situation.

Who they played means nothing as to how they played.

I'm not sure either Arsenal or Barca play total football. Players have clearly assigned positions and tend to stay in them. Barca play with four or five attacking players who play in essnetially free roles, but that is not total football.

Monaco with 10 men managed very well against Ranieri's CFC.

10 men is not a sure-lose condition.
With the lack of depth in Uniteds midfield it is, we were already having a poor performance and Scholesy's sending off made me sure this was gonna end in a mauling but we showed great character in the 2nd half and fought for it, Roma will feel aggrieved they didn't get a 3rd.

We should have scored a 3rd, but Man U defended in numbers so its always difficult, next match Man U need to push their full-backs forward and attack a bit so then we will see.

Yes, Roma could have (should have?) scored a third, but it was wrong to think the red card would alter the game so much. Roma were already the leading team, the progressive team. One man more didn't change this, although by no means did it hurt us.

Manchester are, simply, much too good a side to get trashed, 10 man or 11.

Quality in CL has been pretty poor this year, no side is playing on the level of Barça of 2005 and 2006 and the same for Chelsea in those two years. You may say those side only won once but the quality was better.

Roma looks bright in defense, but their qualities are much more of synergy/teamplay etc than individual quality which they lack a bit. But its great seeing a side that is somewhat modest play this well and ****up the favorites.
