The golden era of Bulgarian football was available in two eras. The first one was during the 1960s that they could qualify in 3 consecutive World cup tournaments. Although there were many great players in that team like Asparuhov, Yakimov, Bonev, Kolev and Penev but they could not go farther than the first round. The time had passed for two decades until their glory years were appeared once again after Emil Kostadinov shocked French football’s fan with shooting winning goal in the last second in the WC 1994 qualification round. Moreover, Stoichkov, Balakov and Letchkov all were the most important players to lead Bulgaria winning fourth place in the final tournament. Their players have mostly been from CSKA Sofia that is the greatest club in history of Bulgarian league while Levski Sofia was just a number one instead in the recent decades.

Explanation of Squad

Georgi Naydenov is a lot better than Mihaylov and Sokolov. Dimitar Penev was one of the best defenders to come from Eastern Europe in his era. Manolov was known for his very reliability. Shalamanov is one of the best right-backs ever in history of Balkan Peninsula football. The only weakness in this first Xi is left-back. Bulgaria has never had even international-class player in this position. Ivanov is selected for this position, he was a left-foot center-back. Bozhkov is the only world-class defensive midfielder in history of Bulgarain football. Yakimov is on the left-midfielder and Bonev is on the right-midfielder. This couple occasionally switch to perform as side-midfielder. Asparuhov will be on the right-side forward whil the captain Stoichkov will be on the left. Berbatov is a finisher.

Defence

Hi Dearman,

Not sure if you're still looking at these teams, but I've been taking a look at Bulgaria. The problem I have with your selection is that your goalkeeper and or 4 defenders played in the 60s and early 70s. In the 62, 66 and 70 World Cups, apart from failing to win a single game, Bulgaria also conceded 24 goals in 9 games. Dmitrov may have been the Bulgaria Stam, but that doesn't mean he was that good. Ivanonv should certainly start.
Also, I see the problem at left back but if you are going to play a centre back there, it should be Petrov given that he played there during the 66 World Cup.
Further forward, everything I've read adn seen suggests that Bonev was better than Yakimov, and played on the right, which would balance the side a little.
I know Stuliyan Petrov is a little lower in class, but for the balance of teh side, he has to start. I don't think Letchov can hold the midfield.

I wonder what your definition of "major club" is. FYI Krasimir Balakov played for Sporting at the height of his career and was our player when he got into FIFA's World Cup XI in 1994 and when he won the trophy of best Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 1995. But maybe in the websites you use they think that Stuttgart is a bigger club than Sporting. :pp

Balakov was rated as world-class player in 1997 when he played for Stuttgart.

He was also world-class in 1994 with Bulgaria national team. All in all, He was just so great with Sporting lisbon the last two years only.
