The what now?

Carson loves mercato, but if what you were saying is true, he'd have been a Chelsea fan a long time ago. And dude's a Spurs fan, ffs.

yes...transfers are exciting...star players are good to have...but i feel i just can't quit supporting my favorite teams...no matter how bad they play...what are the results..

when i was a kid...the 3 germen attracted me so i started to support INTER...hoddle and waddle attracted me so i started to support the SPURS...i don't think there will be a player who can make me switch team...maybe i will like that player...but not his team...

Eh, Moratti anyone? Before you toned down your transfer policy and stopped signing every player on the market it was totally ridiculous what was going on at Inter. And five years later you're criticizing Chelsea? How quaint.

We used to make lists of all the Inter signings that had flopped just because you had an atrocious record of signings vs success. The turnover back then was incredible. Noone was saying it was "bad for football" cause we loved those huge transfers, and besides Inter wasn't winning anyway.

But come on, have some perspective. As far as I'm concerned the Most Insane Transfer Overspender is a title that still belongs to Inter.

Moratti was going nuts because he was trying everything to win, and the spending was a direct result of this. So in a nutshell, he would of rather not spent, but that wasn't working, so he spent and spent. Finally he realised that spending huge amounts on star players is not the way to build a football team.

However you would think other clubs in Europe would learn from his mistakes?

I think the criticism of Chelsea and City stand, it wasn't cool when we did it, and its not good now.

My own perspective on this is that its really not about Manchester City or Chelsea. Its about filthy rich tycoons who are buying English clubs and pumping a lot of money into them, thus creating an uneven playing field in Europe.

If this shiek bought Marseille, Porto, Lazio or Werder Bremen for example, I don't think I would have a problem.

But seeing more rich foreign money coming into the Premiership has me worried about the state of European football and how it could look down the road.

We could have a situation where the Premiership becomes a dominant league in Europe, and that is not good for Inter or any other continental European team.

I think that is my concern over anything else.

Giggs: Where's Your History, City?
While the rest of the Premier League glances nervously over their shoulders at Manchester City, Ryan Giggs insists his cross-town rivals are nothing more than new money...

What's so surprising about that, Spurs have always been one of the top clubs for exciting transfer rumours and they are involved in transfer sagas all the time. ;)

I have to take this with a smile. As far as I'm concerned people are just worried it will upset the status quo. Well guess what, before Abramovich there already was a massively uneven playing field with some clubs spending three times the worth of other clubs in one season. So why are we so worried all of a sudden?

Before Chelsea it was only Inter. How much did you spend again during the last decade, was it 300 mil or something?

Spurs is not far behind.
Do points fly over your head as a habit? Assuming you were right (and ignoring the Galacticos for some unknown reason), why did he not defect to Chelsea in that case? It's been a while. And you don't see Spurs breaking records for transfers, or do you? Sol Campbell, as far as I know, moved out. As did Berbatov. But perhaps you have some greater wisdom you'd like to share. As of now, you're looking quite lost.

Well switching clubs would take him to a lower level, even lower than just being an Inter fan.

He is too nice of a guy to do that.

Or maybe he has something for clubs with history of spending big and getting almost nothing in return? hmmmmmmm

Since I'm not paying spending big and getting almost nothing in return is better than not spending and getting even less.

i have been very frustrated to see that we (tottenham) have invested so much but we still got bad results...and only disappointment...who doesn't want good results while spending big? but it's not my problem...what can u do as a fan? only get behind your team and support them...through and through...

anyway, it is just sport...nothing to take it too serious...

You have pretty much hit my point...the only way you win consistently with a policy of buying expensive players is if you have great minds behind the buying/management and an endless amount of cash and in many ways things falling into place (i.e. your rivals become weaker,no pressure and just plain old luck)...Chelsea got it right and they were lucky since they were the first in line in England...

This current trend of Billionares buying clubs for hobbies will ultimately fizzle....afterall we all know that their are always very few world class players at any point in time...buying a class player (Not World class) for $40M won't get you to too far...

England didn't make the Euros with all their stars...the Galatico's didn't win much and prior to 2006 neither did we with all the money we spent...it takes so many elements to be consistently sucsessful...if football was a one man sport thats when i would be very afraid...

EPL has made itself (or its clubs) attractive to global tycoons who want global attention like Abramovic, Thaksin and the arabs, or businessmen who want to make money - like the americans.

Just like Serie A teams are attractive to people who want attention in Italy, on a smaller or bigger scale (Berlusconi, Zamparini.... Ghirardi...).

Nothing odd about that.

Serie A would be a lot worse off without sugar-daddies than EPL.

The reason why chelsea got it right, and Spurs did not is because Chelsea spent 8 times as much as Spurs did (http://www.purelymancity.com/wp-content/transfertable.jpg). The deal with money and football is that expenditures is strongly decreasing returns to scale. So to become twice as good, you'd need to spend 5 times more; to be 3 times as good, you'd need to spend 20 times more... and so on. Even so, if you keep pumping in money, you'll eventually win some titles.
