Baggio rejects Olympic bid Friday 9 January, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italian legend Roberto Baggio seems to have dismissed the idea of taking part in the 2004 Olympic Games.

"Could I go to Athens? No, I’m thinking just about my club," said the former Juventus captain.

"The only Azzurro that I’m now interested in is the one that is contained in the Brescia shirt."

There were calls for Baggio to take part in the Games after the 36-year-old revealed that he would be retiring at the end of this season.

However, there is pressure on him to reconsider his plans after his display in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Siena.

Baggio was in inspired form as he scored twice but also set up the other two goals for the Stadio Rigamonti outfit.

"For now I’m just concentrating on how to face the next four months of the season," he added.

"As you all know, my career has been tormented by injuries. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens."

And finally he was first choice against France - and had to experience again being crashed out on penalties. For the third time in a row!!! For him personally it must have been a desaster.
And that was his last tournament......
.
Baggio wasn't the 1st choice against France, he came in as a substitute. Maldini start that match with Del Piero:rollani:....This WC hurt the most coz I know it'll be Baggio's last.3rd time out of WC by penalties...:depress:

ooops, my fault.... thanx for telling me. I disagree with you btw: 94 was more worse. Because it was a final and because it was HIM who missed it. In 1998 he was not the decisive person in the pks.

In 94 baggio was'nt the first Italian player to miss from the spot so how does that make him the Culprit:confused: .People who accuse baggio of that 94 loss against Brazil know $HIT about Football.

Hear, hear...
Wise words from Schumy. In fact if Roby hadn't been there Italy would've been knocked out in the second round without a doubt. Roby played Italy to the finals. Yeah he missed, but he wasn't the only one, even if he had scored, it wouldn't necessarily have been enough for Italy to win.

from hero to scapegoat or from scapegoat to hero... isn´t that always typical for the f****** press? :yuck: Could name thousands of examples for that.

The world will be without the greatest Italian footballer of all times.

Indeed Words can simply not describe the emotions I will be feeling when Roby Bows out of Football.Un Pezza del mio Cuore e gia rotto.:depress:

Baggio to delay retirement? Monday 16 February, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Baggio has admitted that his passion for the game may see him postpone his retirement.

The 36-year-old revealed at Christmas that he would be hanging up his boots at the end of term but that may no longer be the case.

"I’m happy with the recognition that I’m still receiving," he told a local Brescia TV station today.

"On the one hand I’m thinking that I will retire as I had already announced, but I still have a great deal of passion for the game which is making things difficult."

Baggio argued that his battles with injury was a major factor in his decision. And he admits he’s finding it tough this term.

"Unfortunately I’m having to still battle against the pain," he added. "I picked up a knock in the game against Milan and I’ve been struggling ever since."

The news that the former Juventus ace is once more considering his future will be welcomed by Brescia and football fans in general.

‘Il Codino’ has played 14 times for the Lombard side this term where he has still been displaying his silky skills.

He may have only netted five times but he has created numerous goals and scoring chances for his teammates.

Let the legend live on,The deft pass for caraccilo against sampdoria just was another example of the class the genius has.
Welcome back to Milan with Open arms any day.

I second that!:D

Man..I didn't know he's been struggling in pain since that game against us. Wasn't it Pirlo who knocked him? Or was it the other way round?

Baggio considers his future Sunday 14 March, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Baggio has scored his 200th Serie A goal, but admits he is still intent on hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

¡§The decision to retire is a very difficult one, but these little injury problems are the ones affecting a choice that I have perhaps already made.¡¨

Since the Divine Ponytail revealed this would be his final campaign fans, colleagues and pundits have been begging him to reconsider.

¡§I still think that I will hang up my boots in May, even if it is a decision that gives me great sadness. But I must make that choice because I have had a series of injuries and it is difficult to continue in these circumstances.¡¨

Baggio first opened that extraordinary account ¡V becoming only the fifth player to score 200 Serie A goals ¡V on May 10 1987 against Napoli.

¡§This is an important goal because it enabled us to draw with Parma,¡¨ he said after the 2-2 draw at the Tardini.

¡§I couldn¡¦t say which was my best goal of the 200, because sometimes they are scrappy but important. I can say that I have given 100 per cent in every match for 17 years.¡¨

Baggio has had well publicised problems with Coaches over the years and assures he will not become a tactician.

¡§I think I¡¦ll do without football for a while,¡¨ he revealed, ¡§and I don¡¦t know what will happen in the future. We¡¦ll just have to wait and see.¡¨

I nearly teared up while watching the video clip on RaiUno's 90minuto :proud:

200 goals for THE KING. The man responsible for me being a Juve & Azzurri fan.

I remember French commentators calling a long-haired Del Piero "Baggio deux".

But with all respect to my current idol...I have yet to see a player grace the football pitch with such high quality of play (especially with what he's doing given his age!!) as much as THE DIVINE PONY-TAIL

Grazie per tutti, Roby. You will always have a special place in our hearts.

:proud:
