Joe the Red set to make a mark
WITH Wayne Rooney in the bag and Cristiano Ronaldo back in the fold, Manchester United are already keeping a careful eye on another teen sensation.

Sixteen-year-old Italian kid Giuseppe Rossi has made a big impact in the junior ranks at Old Trafford following his low-key transfer from Parma in the summer.

And after netting three goals in two games for the under-18 side and then smashing in a wonder goal for the junior reserve side against Rochdale last week, Rossi has staff and teammates raving.

Now United stalwart Arthur Albiston believes that Rossi, whose name literally translates as "Joe the Red", could be pushing for a place in the first team by the end of this season.

His goal for the reserves was a masterpiece. Picking the ball up deep, he ran at the Rochdale defence, swerved to the right across the edge of the 18-yard box and beat one defender with a bewildering switch of feet.

Taking it wide of the last defender, he beat the man with a drag of the left foot and crashed an unstoppable shot in off the near post. Albiston has seen clips of Rossi in action and says: "He is a box of tricks, a real bundle of energy.

"He doesn't look the tallest player, but he has a low centre of gravity and great control with both feet. It doesn't matter if you are slow, when you have that low centre of gravity and can get away from people quite quickly.

"He looks an exciting prospect. The goal he scored for the reserves, the defenders didn't know what to do - he teased them in and finished it like Ole Solskjaer. You expected him to cross and he fired it in off the post. It wasn't a bad strike for his supposedly weaker right foot."

Rossi's teammates in the junior sides say he is the best finisher they have ever seen and Albiston adds: "When you get praise from your teammates, it doesn't come any higher. The lad hasn't been at the club long and has already made a big impression.

"Hopefully he's another one who might be getting a sniff of first-team action later in the season."

Rossi almost slipped in through the back door in the summer, amid the arrivals of Alan Smith for £6million and Gabriel Heinze for £6.9million.

The American-born player can do a job as a striker or an attacking midfielder and is already established as an Italian under-19 international.

Rossi arrived as part of United's cosmopolitan youth development rogramme which last season brought in German midfielder Markus Neumayr, American pair Kenny Cooper and Jonathan Spector, Belgian defender Floribert Ngalula and Finnish forward Jami Puustinen.

That programme has been pushed to a new level by the capture of Rossi, of promising young Spanish defender Gerard Pique from Barcelona and of 15-year-old Cologne goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler last month - three players from the three strongest Continental leagues.

He had a very good game against Rochdale, and scored one of the best goals I've seen this season.

Watching him over the last 4 games, he seems to have a lot in his favour. His vision is sensational to say the least, one through ball he played to Colin Heath comes to mind instantly, he recieved the ball with his back to goal, and just spun and lobbed a perfectly weighted pass over two defenders straight to Heath - Bergkampesque. He also set Chris Eagles off on the wing with a fantastic first touch, and then a backheel past the right back.

He showed great poaching instincts Vs Fulham last week when he sprouted wings to get onto Lee Martins pass, to steer it under the goalkeeper. His finishing is just deadly. Similar to Ole.

He's a tough little fecker, considering his height. He bosses defenders and doesn't gibe them a minute's rest, similar to Paul Dickov really.

He has such a powerful left foot, yet as you can see from this goal he's equally comfortable with his right.

He's got a fantastic leap on him too, rising above defenders that are much taller than him. He hit the post in the Rochdale game with a header. He also has pace to burn and loves to dribble directly at defenders.

I need to see a bit more of him, but so far, I'd say he is one of the best young players I've ever seen in our youth ranks. And he's still only 16!?!?!?

Don't think we'll be seeing much if any of him at all this season.fergie will give the lad time to get soem playing time in England for the reserves and perhaps if his developement goes according then we could see him making a few appearances next season for the senior team.

We beat Bolton 3-0 tonight to make it 7 wins from 7 games.

3 class goals. 1 from Sylvan Blake after David Jones intercepted a stray pass and released Rossi, who yet again ran at the defenders, and when they were drawn to him released a sublime pass to Blake who curled it in the top corner. A fantastic long-range strike from Eagles for the 2nd, and another top top goal from Rossi for the 3rd to keep up his amazing scoring run.

Another clean sheet too, haven't conceeded since the league started. McShane and Mark Howard have formed a fantastic partnership in central defence.

Well the young italian lad is simply magnificent. I hope he turns out to be the new Roberto Baggio. Yesterday's goal against Bolton in reserves is terrific.

BTW we could find some good talent in Djordic as a left winger for the first team in years to come.

Djordjic has been linked with Leeds. the guy has talent but he's never used. Players like Richardson and Fletcher get nods instead of him while he has so much more talent. He can play left wing or behind the strikers. Too bad Fergie doesn't want to use him.

So, we beat Newcastle reserves 3-0 tonight. Our midfield, and in particular David Jones, completely overran them and Rossi was sharp upfront. Should have been 6-0 at least, but the Newcastle keeper pulled off a few smart saves and their were a couple of goal-line clearances. Totally outclassed them.

Barclays Reserve League North
United Reserves 3
Everton Reserves 1
Moss Lane, Altrincham

United's second string came from behind to record an impressive win over a young Everton reserve side at Moss Lane.

The Reds fell behind after just two minutes following a mistake by Jonathon Spector that allowed Victor Anichebe to finish past Tom Heaton.

After almost an entire half of pressure, the Reds finally drew level in sublime fashion. Chris Eagles played the ball to David Jones, whose exquisite backheeled return gave Eagles the chance to curl a first-time effort beautifully past Richard Wright.

A minute later, the Reds pulled clear of the visitors as David Poole nodded into the empty net after Wright had parried Kieran Richardson's powerful drive.

The result was put beyond doubt just after half time as Everton's Eddy Bosnar sliced a clearance into his own goal after good work down the left by Richardson.

Reds defender Mark Howard conceded a late penalty with a handball, but found himself off the hook as Tom Heaton superbly stopped Nick Chadwick's spot-kick.

United team: Heaton; Picken; Lawrence; Howard; Spector; Heath; Eagles; Jones; Ebanks-Blake; Poole; Richardson. Substitutes: Collett; Crockett; Hogg; Timm; Calliste.
