Decided to make a thread on this, there are many Croatian players (some born in Croatia, some not) who are playing either in youth teams in Europe or first teams who still didn't choose who to play for. Maybe somebody who knows better than me can tell us who will they choose

- Ivan Rakitic (Basel, 18 years old) he played for the Swiss U17's

- Ivo Ilicevic (Bochum, 19 years old) read on sportnet that the German U21's are trying to snatch him up

- Luka Odak (Bayern Munich, 16 years old) obviously no idea where he was born but he plays for a top youth team in Bayern but he will be in Germany for a while

Mario Vrancic (Mainz, 17 years old) born in Croatia but played mostly in Germany, played for their U17's and it really looks like he will stick with Germany

There is also a 15 year old in the Borussia Dortmund youth system but he is still too young to really be judged

these are the main ones, I'm sure there are plenty more like the Spiranovic from Australia...

here is an interview with Rakitic...

Ivane kako si uspio doći do FC Basela?

U današnjoj situaciji kada moraš trenirati i u školu ići nije lako?

Mi u klubu osim prve ekipe imamo i tkz.

He played twice for Croatia´s U-16 NT (vs Slovakia and Turkey), but the Germans still want Luka to play for them! The same they did with Mario Vrancic, he played in a friendly for Croata agianst Slovenia and scored but now he plays for Germany! The Bosnians are also interested in him! Marko Marin is born in Gradiska, he plays for their U-17s!

for a long time now, what gives d11? Aren't Croats born overseas allowed to play for us?

#12 ·
Of course Croats born overseas should be able to play for the nt, i know what d11s and MMs points are though that we should put some time and money into the development of players that live in Croatia and play there. Which i agree to. Dont know if d11 is saying no Croats born overseas should play for the nt.

#13 ·
Don't know what bias you are talking about CT, but it is nothing new that I don't like the policy of chasing players produced in other systems.

The priority should be the local game in Croatia because that is what sustains the NT, the league and our clubs, not players from outside the country.

I think chasing players like Bilos, Didulica and others is wrong. If they want to play for Croatia then they will say so and that is fine with me, but Didulica is only in the NT to further his own career and that is not his fault, but HNS's for even giving him the opportunity.

Seric did it purely for career purposes, so no. Simunic didn't but was about to change the decision when he wasn't getting picked. Jozic then called him.

The others I don't know, but any player that announces that they want to play for Croatia before they are approached is fine with me. This means that they want to play for Croatia with no strings attached and no guarantees. When I read that HNS are in talks and negotiating with players, it makes me sick to my stomach. This is a NT afterall, what is there to negogiate?

Players should play for the country they call home and I mean REALLY call home..

I don't like HNS coming to countries like Australia just to scout players. This is not accepted in any football country. I don't think Croatian players in Australia will be playing for Croatia from now on anyway. One because there is hardly any real talents and secondly because Australia now has respect and most importantly, games. Unless it is like Didulica who wasn't picked by Australia and then went to Croatia.

I say - Lets not use players like didulica and seric as an example but concentrate more on the logic.

Croatian player (Born and raised wherever) = Croatian NT

I agree with blast.

D11 you have to understand, the FA has to call the player to the squad before he can make statements such "I want to play for Croatia". I would love to live in wonderland where all football players with dual nationalities came out in public before having been called...but reality hits you on the ass.

Footballers are professionals nowadays, they make moves to further their careers. Whay in hell would a 15 year old jeopardise his career by declaring his intent on playing for one of the two countries for which he is eligable? (thus being demonised by the fans and media of the other country before he wears any NT shirt, facing the risk of playing for neither country)

Welcome to wonderland.

I disagree with whats in bold. Klasnic was picked by Germany before Croatia and refused, and players like the Kovac brothers would have made the German squad, and Germany has never been a country in the football wonderland.

Theres still a few talented Aussie-Croatians. Patafta, Bozanic, Spiranovic...

You had to go and spoil it... even though you did agree really... :D

That's what I'm talking about Blast and Ero. D11 I think we all agree with your reasoning, but it's the hard line stance you present it with, which makes us wonder if you are against some foriegn born Croats playing for the NT, or ALL foriegn born Croats playing for us. I agree Markovic is an ass for trying to get everyone and anyone to play for Cro, but there have been huge positives(Kovac brothers, Simunic etc..)

Can someone please give me the likely choices of these players - Oliver Bozanic, Matthew Spiranovic and Dario Vidosic???

Thanks.

Matt will leave Down Under and sign for an european team! NO Croatian one! Oliver Bozanic is in Croatia´s squad for the U-19s qualies in Lithuania and Vidosic is born in Croatia - so who knows! Btw Dario´s Croatian is very good and he loves Osijek! ;) :hopefull:

jutarnji list reports that both Ivo Ilicevic and Ivan Rakitic will play for Croatia, Ladic has watched them both on TV

The Croatian U21's will have a camp in December but it will be difficult for both Ilicevic and Rakitic to come there because they play abroad and these countries don't have a long winter break like Croatia

Ivan Rakitic could make his Croatian debut in the Alpe-Adria-Mirop cup which will be played early in 2007
