Okay I opened a thread on a similar topic in the World Football forum. But I'm facing a huge problem and I need specific answers here....I'm going to miss seven days of WC 2006!! That's seven days people!! :pp

No I'm not going to pay a fortune and subscribe to WC Channel just for the first seven days, because on June 16 I'll be in Lebanon and over there I'll have 92384723 different channels to choose from!!!!! :D

So here I am in Dubai, with a HotBird satellite. Will Rai, TVE, any of the Arab TVs show it on the free-to-air channels? I know ZDF will broadcast the games, but I don't receive it!!!

Can anyone please help me?

I heard that ART contacted ZDF and ARD, and asked them not to air the World Cup matches on the Hotbird satellite, to which they complied. So, only the ZDF and ARD channels on Astra will broadcast them.

But there are several other channels on numerous satellites we don't know of yet, but I promise to have their details posted here a couple of days before the opening match...

Perhaps you would like to share the details of the channels you say will broadcast the World Cup matches, let's make this a two-way cooperation...
Off Hotbird/Nilesat I don't know.

But what I DO know for a fact is that the terrestrial channels of Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan etc.......they will all show the WC matches.

TeleLiban and LBCI. There's TVE as well...

Perhaps this may be redundant, but aren't the abovementioned terrestrial channels available on Arabsat/Nilesat where you guys are?

Hmmm...as far as I know we get the "SAT" versions of these channels. i.e. LBC -Sat, New TV Sat, TL - Sat etc.

The Rai channels are gonna broadcast the games with a "squiggly" picture.

Maaaaan...this sucks. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go to my favorite shisha, walle3 el nara and watch...:drunk:

In fact, ART had a press release a couple of weeks ago, saying that the broadcast rights of the World Cup have not been and will not be sold to any other channel, whether terrestrial or satellite, and they are the sole broadcasters of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and North Africa. It was released right after rumours started that King Abdullah managed to buy broadcast rights.

If you are a FastLinker, you can go to any Fast Link branch, pay 223JD plus tax on your cell card and get the WC subscribtion. They will re-pay you 60JD, 5JD per month. It is a good offer but I am going to get the ART offer.

You guys don't catch LBCI or TeleLiban terrestrial channels in Jordan?

God I wish I booked my vacation earlier :wallbang:

So could it be that ART are faking their being the only broadcaster of the World Cup in the region, for financial and reputative gains maybe?
I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. It's too difficult to prevent anyone from tweaking their satellite dishes in order to get the desired signal. Only problem is how "tech-savvy" you are with Satellite/TV tuning. And most people don't know how or can't be bothered.

I live in a residential place where the satellite is pretuned for the entire building...so I can't really tune it to my preference. Anyway, I'll figure something out. :moan:

I watched Al-Jazeera today and Ayman Jadda was really angry because the ART cock suckers are accepting any offers from anybody! A lot of people in the ME will not be able to watch the WC because of that ****er Saleh Kamel.

ART have the rights.

I read a while ago in the papers that even KSA local channels are still struggling to get the rights for the games, and that some official said they'll broadcast the games whether ART like it or not. Not sure how, considering I always thought FIFA rules that WC participants are allowed to broadcast the games locally for free.

Will ART show it on ART America though? Doubtful but I saw an ad today for the WC, they didn't specify if its ART America or ART Sports though.

Which Tv5? There's the one for Europe, Asia and Africa. Or is it available on all of them?

The ART offer is the safest bet, but if you're averse to spending the dosh then i would think you could catch it one of the sats. Hotbird in general though isn't a good bet, because usually they scramble their feeds when they broadcast games with rights restrictions as they know their transmissions on Hotbird are received worldwide.

What i do know is that i have Teleliban and LBCI, on which sat i don't know.

Rhiz - I'm glad to hear it's not complicated in Lebanon because I am hoping to catch as much of the end of the WC as I can - which should be easy right?

Actually Tele Liban and LBCI won't be showing, as far as I know.

However, cable TV is available everywhere...we have...*cough* *piracy* *cough*....hence the "92384723 different channels to choose from"

:pp

Anyway, since I'll be getting ART for next season to watch EPL + CL games, I think I might subscribe. My mate told me it costed him 500 dirhams which isn't thaaat bad. I thought it was more.

So I will be able to find somewhere to watch the games - do you know anywhere near AUB (Bliss Street?)?

I'm sure you'll find more than one place to watch the games. Perhaps the cafe's in Bliss or in Hamra would be showing the matches, so I don't think you'll need to worry.

Evvvvveryone has cable TV in Lebanon. Where will you be staying if u don't mind me asking, btw?

Hey, why don't you try the AUB cafeteria? I watched most of the World Cup 2002 there because I had my final exams. The atmosphere in there is insane  ......again though, you better hope AUB cafeteria TV is hooked up to cable channels

Jeez Natalya, all this talk of bliss, hamra, beirut, AUB.....God I can't wait to go home :proud:  :hopefull:

I'm staying on the AUB campus so the cafeteria sounds like a good option.

Well you don't have long to wait until you're home - only a couple of weeks! :)

85 million dollars for the WC rights, and ART still won't accept it! Amazing..

.. For those in N.America, its going to be live on ART America.

Breaking News

The Lebanese Ministry of Information cut a deal with ART to broadcast the World Cup 2006 ENTIRELY FREE ONLY IN LEBANON!!!!!!! :pp :strong: :cap:

I'm soooo happy and proud of my country!!!! Finally!! A decision made by the parliament for the people, and everybody's happy regardless of religion, sect or whatever!!!!!! :drunk: :D

LABBAYKA YA LOUBNAN!!!!! :hopefull:  :proud:

P.S.

It looks like LBC terrestrial is going to show it. I'll keep you posted :)

Well, no disrespect, but thats because Lebanon is tiny :D .. The money they're getting from LBC is probably better deal overall than airing it exclusively.

I don't think ART can give such a deal to Egypt, no matter how much we pay. Samething for Algeria and many other countries ;)

Which means many will be moving to cafes to watch the games. And those guy can be really nasty. I remember watching the confederation cup 1999 in a cafe in downtown Cairo and the cafe owner said we have to buy something every half :D

3 days to the World Cup and yet no real coverage from ART. What a waste of 9 channels, i would rather have 2 channels only from Al Jazeera sports.

The 9 channels are:
1. The main channel showing the matches + pre-game + post-game analysis + good morning and good evening Germany shows.
2. Will only be used in the 3rd round of group stage when 2 matches are played at the same time.
3. Same as channel 1 but in English.
4. HD (High Definition), needs a special HD receiver and HDTV.
5. Will focus on 6 players from team A, 15 minutes on each player.
6. Same as 5 but for team B.
7. Sky cam for Team A, better view of their tactics.
8. Same as 7 but for team B.
9. WC highlights channel

Now i love HDTV and i've seen it used in the US, but here in the Gulf area we still dont have HD compatible satellite receivers. In 4 years time, every house should be able to watch HDTV. 99% of the time i will watch channel 1 (or the English channel, depends on the commentary), the others are really unnecessary.

Oh and I hate ART's studios. They're very dark and boring. I hope they're better for the World Cup. Look at how al Jazeera's Serie A and La Liga studios are very colorful and lively. About the commentators, well they basically dont shut up. True they liven up the game, but they overdo it especially 3e9am AlShwaili :irritate: Also they're very biased towards Brazil, England, and maybe Italy. Have you ever heard an English commentator shouting at the player to shoot shoot shoot, when obviously they can't hear what you're saying I have much more to say about ART commentators but lets just leave it at that ;)

Hi all :)

Nine channels? Where the hell are they? I subscribed today with ART for the WC and a whole year and have not heard or seen those 9 channels! I think I must do channel search tonight.

However, Arabic commentary sucks big time! Issam El-Shawali is why I have subscribed to ART! He is funny, good voice, well informed and he makes some nice comments. The rest simply boring and very very very biased to Brazil, especially that Kuwaiti ignorant shmuck Adnan Hamad :yuck: He is rubbish!

Hi Maher,

Nice to see you back.

I'm pleasantly surprised that ART will transmitting in HD. If I was in Saudi I will definitely take advantage of that. Just hook up an HD sat tuner card on your PC and away you go.

Here in the UK I've had to fork out a fortune to upgrade my Sky to HD.
