Who will win the 2014 World Cup Opening Match?

Damn, I just watched a replay of the Brazil - Spain 3-0 Confederations Cup Final from last year. When the real show actually starts, that Brazil crowd and the real Brazil will be very tough for us. I'll be happy if we put on a good performance against the hosts in this opening match, regardless of the result. Anything else would be a bonus. Don't get me wrong, I still think getting a result is not out of the question. It'll be tough though (and fun to watch, hopefully).

It should be noted that the game is being played in Sao Paolo. The city is notoriously known for its fans turning on the Brazilians quick and hard if they don't like what they see.

My heart is with all the guys who are predicting a positive result, but I'm sorry to say that my head says 2-0 Brazil...:scared:
I would put my money on a Brazil win too ... but, opening games are often tied. I think a tie would be very good for both sides.

PS Some people here really underestimate Mexico. I hope your NT doesn't ...

I think our guys have too much experience to underestimate Mexico... or Cameroon.

THis is a focussed and experienced bunch that is hungry to get into the knockout stages... because simply put... we are overdue.

Besides, Kovac wouldn't allow it.

maybe SN is stretching some of Suker's words, but it seems like Suker is demanding that Kovac gets this team into the knockout stages. If they don't I wonder if he will do something irrational like he did with Jelicic at the U20 tournament a few years back

It's a Zidak article so I take it with a grain of salt :D

Brazil-Croatia
3-4 or
4-5

It'll be a barn burner much like the Tourney opener in Deutschland. I think we have the pedigree, especially in the middle. I know we'll play our football and do great things with it.

I think this would be good for this game

------------------Pletikosa--------------------
Srna-------Corluka----Lovren------Vrsaljko
------------Modric----Brozovic--------
Perisic----------Rakitic---------Kovacic
------------------Olic-------------------

I say give brozovic a go. Im hearing Schildenfeld is injured now?

I heard some blabbles on Schildenfeld but apparently he should be good to go.

I certainly wouldn't mind that lineup karate kid, but i do fear how Brozovic will handle such a game of pressure and magnitude.

There's certainly alot of options in terms of versatility out there in our midfield:

I got the feels that its going to be this:

Modric Rakitic

Perisic Kovacic Olic

I'd much rather have Rebic start on the wing and put Olic at the CF position or have Kova on the wing and Rakitic as the AM.

With this generation of players, anything less than the getting out of the group is failure

I think the lineup CK posted before is the lineup we will see except Rakitic will play alongside either Brozovic/Vukojevic and Modric will play further upfield. It's clear from Rakitic's position vs Australia and the games vs Iceland that he will play as one of the 2 in the double pivot and not as the 10. I think Kovac will try to get Rakitic to drop deep and split the 2 centrebacks in order for Croatia to retain possession a little better and try to calm the game and the crowd.

Vrsaljko is a lock now. I'll also take Lovren over Schildenfeld anyday of the week. I will be extremely disappointed if Lovren does not start, he is our best and most complete CB. Frankly, Schildenfeld over Lovren is a little insulting. Lovren is faster, stronger, better at commanding his penalty area and in duels and technically on another planet. He is also our biggest weapon from set pieces.

No Jelavic from the start either please. In these games upfront against Thiago Silva and David Luiz, you need lungs and clever movement to try and retain the ball and relive some pressure. Olic is our man for this job. Jelavic's role should be limited to a sub if we need to chase a goal.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the friendlies either side just played. I also doubt Brazil will play with the same intensity they did vs Spain. They are here to play 7 games and won't press us like it's a final. You cannot play games every 4-5 days consistently at that intensity without dropping off. Their objective will be to win without expending too much energy.

GREAT analysis Tommy! You're right on each points!

Brazil will play like crap and pick up another jammy win, like against the Serbs.
I think we have the goods to punish a Brazil playing like crap. unlike the Serbs ;)

you gotta have faith grba legendo!! :yess:

one of the most enticing things about our NT is the element of unpredictability... I can see us winning big, I can see us drawing, I can see us folding up under the buzz and hum of the fans
