Since Zubizarreta left the Camp Nou, Barcelona had a big problem with the goalkeepers. Only Ruud Hesp had some regularity, but he came in the last part of his career. But 4 years ago, a goalie of the youth system made his debut in Primera thanks to the hand of Louis Van Gaal and found regularty with the arrival of Frank Rijkaard.

Victor Valdés was the youngest player in the starting lineup of the team that won the CL in Paris. He was the first Zamora that Barça had in almost 20 years after Zubizarreta. Victor has shown a constant progression, but this year he's showing his best form. Our young goalkeeper assure this position for the next decade. Being a goalie in the Camp Nou is a difficult task. His self-steem and the way he faces the bad moments make him triumph where other goalies failed.

Victor Valdés, a life in blaugrana.

The career of Victor Valdés, who'll be 25 next Sunday, has been precocious. He's the youngest goalie that has consolidated his career in the goal of Barcelona and the youngest guy to enter in La Masia. Valdés always was there before the symbols of the club.

He entered in the youth system being 10 years, 7 months and 15 days old (August 29th, 1992). Until few time ago, noone was even close to this record. Bacary Mendez, who came from Almeria and play in the Infantil team, arrived in 2004 being 10 years, 11 months and 20 days old. He was near, but couldn't beat Victor, who is the youngest in history.

Victor also beats the symbols of the club, like Guillermo Amor (13) or Pep Guardiola (12) or other young players like Jofre Mateu (13), Pepe Reina (13), Marc Martínez (12), Diong Mendy (12), Andrés Iniesta (12) Lluís Sastre (12) or Jorge Troiteiro (12).

Now, near his 25th b-day, Victor has been half of his life linked to Barcelona. A record that few people in Rijkaard's squad can say. You may think he's been 15 years in Barcelona, but this is not 100% true, since he also was 2 years and a half out of the club.

He arrived to La Masia from the Penya Cinco Copas, where he played the 90/91 and the 91/92 seasons. Oriol Tort and Joan Martinez Vilaseca were the ones who discovered Victor when he played for the Penya.

Being so young in La Masia and his introverted character was a problem in these first months. He was 3 years younger than the next resident of La Masia in age. Victor Valdés missed his fathers, who had gone to live to Los Cristianos (Tenerife), and few months later, Carlos Naval let him go on Dec. 1st., when the kid asked for it.

Victor went with his parents and 2 years and a half later, Victor asked his dad for the return. His father talked to Oriol Tort and they agreed the returned of the goalie in August 1995, when he was 13.

At that age, he started a tough "war" with Pepe Reina, who has the same age. Joan Vila, one of the coaches of the youth system says: "It was a big problem to have 2 huge talents in the same generation".

"They were always in the same team and it was very tough to choose a starter and a sub. At the end, we decided to make 1 change every 2 games".

Jordi Castel is a coach of goalies in the youth system and confirms this rivalry with Reina. "Their commitment in the training sessions was total. They were and are players with spirit, mentality and competitive: both always want to play. If Reina made his debut with the first team before, it was because of the circumstances. Reina was in his best moment, but time has made them be in the first line in the world. This competition could have been a problem, but it finally was good for both. When you have someone so good next to you, you can't relax".

"It was a pleassure to work with them. They always wanted to improve. The best of Victor was his hunger of triumph, he always thought that he could make it. To his quality, you must add an ideal personality for Barcelona's goal. He had bad moments, he received strong criticism for it, and he always knew how to hold the pressure, keeping the calm. He creates a shield to protect himself and be the same in the following game. That's misunderstood and people have a false image of him. He grows with the adversity", says Castel, Valdes' "creator" according to the goalie.

As any other kid of La Masia, Valdes wished to live what he's living: to play every week in the Camp Nou, the stadium where he slept during so many years in his life. In La Masia, Valdes lived in the communitary rooms. With the extension of the residence, Valdés went to live to the Camp Nou itself, in the entrance of the Gate 78. Valdes says that "since that moment we had more intimacy. We were only 3 guys in one room". And he started to listen to the silence of the Camp Nou.

Valdés took a brave decision joining Barcelona so young. Now, with time, he thinks positively of this decision: "I gave all childhood and part of my life to Barça and, instead, I received a great academic and personal formation and also the biggest opportunity that any kid can have: to be a Barcelona player. It was worth it". But not everything was happiness: "When I got there I was 10, 3 years younger than the 2nd youngest. Ivan de la Peña and Albert Celades tried to cheer me up, but it was impossible. I said enough and I went back with my parents. I spent 2 years only preparing myself to go back to Barcelona". Since then he lived some bad sport experiences and also bad personal experiences, as the death of his grandfather Ezequiel. He also lived sweet moments, as sweet as the ones "I experienced in Paris after winning the Champions League final. It has been my happiest moment since I entered in the club".

Victor Valdés, legend.

LEGEND!?!

Come on now... this guy benefits from playing on the best team assembled in the world of the last five years. Good keeper, but not even close to being a legend. Not even good enough for third choice keeper for the national team.

I'm not trolling, but stating the truth. He's not that good and you all know it, except victorvaldes1.

That doesn't mean much. Deco wasn't considered good enough for Brasil, and players as good as Dani Alves and Mancini aren't exactly regulars. Talent doesn't always result in NT recognition.

I'm happy with having Valdes in goal

You're stating an opinion, not the truth

When I read the names of the the Zamoras of Barcelona I see people like Velasco, Ramallets, Pesudo, Sadurni, Reina, Artola, Urruti, Zubi and now Victor.

I'm sure that Victor is going to defend the goal of Barcelona for more than 10 years, if he stays healthy. He'll pass to history as one of the greatest for sure. He'll be the goalie of the team that won the 2nd CL... and everyone knows that he didn't make us win that day, but if we didn't lose was because of him, the only one who stopped Henry.

Being a goalie in Barcelona isn't easy and you just have to review history to know it. Where Victor triumphed, many others failed.

Just as Casillas took profit of it too. But Valdés, as Casillas in your club, has been one of the elements that took us to this level. With Vitor Baia or Rustu, who have received more international praising, it was impossible and they also were in good teams.

About the NT... really, every Spanish knows how it works. Marca, As and the rest of the central media make the list. In the last 2 years, I don't see what makes Valdés worse than Casillas or Reina. Seriously, I don't see it. Of course, he made mistakes... but it's easy to recall that Spain had to play a play-off, because Casillas made a dumb mistake against Serbia in the Calderon that costed us too much. Or how Casillas allowed Eto'o steal a ball in front of his nose 2 years ago. This among other dumb mistakes. And it doesn't mean that Casillas is a bad goalie, the opposite, he's really good. But if you only want to see Valdés' errors, then I can't do anything.

Victor Valdés has been a very important player in the last 3 years and, IMO, he gaved us LOTS of points. He is not a "nice" guy for the press like Casillas and he pays for it. He looks like an arrogant bastard and he even annoyed me sometimes with this attitude. But as the coach said, this is part of his strong personality that allows him to create a shield around him.

IMO, Valdés don't have anything to envy to Casillas and Cañizares and is better than Reina. Reina is a talented goalie, the 2nd goalie of the NT... but when he was in the Camp Nou, he didn't resist the pressure, as Valdés did. It's more difficult to be a goalie in the Camp Nou than to be it in the Spanish NT.

You're saying your truth. My truth is that I bet that Victor Valdés will write his name in big characters in the history of Barcelona and you can count the goalies who can say this with the fingers.

Buffon, Cech, Ikerman, Akinfeev, Given, Van Der Sar and co are just on another level to him, they can make saves he can only dream of, they command areas like he can only dream of, they do most things like only he can dream of. I'm not saying he's crap or anything, but Gio aside he's the player of Barca I'd rank lowest in terms of their position in the world, starters at least.

Hes a great goalkeeper for Barcelona. When Txiki was evaluating the signing of Buffon he said he wasnt a goalie for Barcelona since few teams play such a high line and expect the Goalkeeper to be so exposed in a high pressure club. Im not saying Valdes is a better goalkeeper because that obviously isnt the case but it can "kill" a goalkeeper within a second like few clubs.

Being Catalan certainly helps but above all his strong personality and arrogance are his strongest points. I think goalkeepers like Akinfeev, Given and Sanchez though potentially better would be failures in Barcelona because of this.

I've seen Victor pull of some incredible saves. If I was rating his strong and weak points then his shot stopping wouldn't be a negative. For me his distribution and occasional uncertainty under high balls played into the box are of greater concern.

Akinfeev commands his area like Victor can only dream about? What do you mean exactly?

Well command of an area is how you organise your defence and how you pick and choose when to come and stay and how your defenders can know what you're going to do because you're consistent with it. The top keepers in the world all have this, Valdes looks panicky against high balls and doesn't command his area that well, imo. Same for other good keepers, like Cudicini who miss this aspect.

Given is easily better, btw. God knows why he's been in Newcastle so long but he's been a top 10 and at most points probably top 5 keeper in the world for years. Second best keeper in the PL behind Cech without any question for me.

Sure, but let the time pass and see if he really does keep defending Barcelona's goal for over 10 years... THEN call him Legend... if deserved... but not now.

You woul see, whos really better! :howler:
Its very difficult at Barca to be a goalkeeper!
Given is better at every single aspect of goalkeeping than Valdes. He's spent the last few years covering the asses of Boumsong and Bramble, noone at Barca in the defence is anywhere near as bad as those two.

Who is this Given anyway? Another from the line of pitiful goalkeepers form those fair isles? I really don't know, and Akinfeev, or what's his name?
Victor Valdés. Only beaten by two free kicks in 170 games and one of those was a rebound and only beaten 7 times from outside the area. And as for Zubi, I can't think of any single facet of his game in which he was better than Valdés. He was worse at high balls, long shots, coming out, hard shots down near his feet and don't tell me about reflexes. Victor is in another league.
He's not arrogant, either. It's just the impression he gives.

Given is a stupidly loyal keeper of Newcastle and Rep of Ireland. He's always been absolutely class, he's just always stayed at Newcastle who don't ever seem to be able to build a decent defence to protect him, so he has to deal with about a million shots at goal, most of which he repels.

So all those years of us whining about how we never found a worthy successor for Zubi had you crying of laughter? :D

On topic, it's funny how underrated Valdes is by other fans, but we know what we have, since we saw "better" keepers fail. Although I am sure not many of you realize how good Enke for example actually is.
