Flores: Spain drain has hampered Valencia

MADRID, June 1 (Reuters) - Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores believes his side's league campaign has suffered this season because they have overtaken Real Madrid and Barcelona as the main supplier of players for the Spanish national team.

'One of the heaviest burdens we have had to bear this season is that we have become the team that provides most players for the national side,' Sanchez Flores was quoted as saying in the Sport newspaper on Friday.

'Despite suffering a host of injuries this season this team has been the basis of the national team. It obviously shows we have good players but it makes big demands on us too.'

Valencia have supplied six players for the Spain squad for the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Latvia and Liechtenstein, while Barcelona have provided three and Real Madrid two.

Sanchez Flores said that midfielders David Silva and Miguel Angel Angulo had both been called up despite suffering from injuries.

'Silva couldn't play for us in the last match and Angulo has got a serious muscle strain,' he said. 'I'm worried because I could see it coming. I know they are going to push them to the limit and they might not be fit when they come back here.'

Valencia, who are assured of a place in next season's Champions League qualifiers, are in fourth place in the Primera Liga, five points behind Sevilla with two games left to play.

Marchena, Albelda, Joaquin, Angulo, Silva and Villa have been called up for Spain's upcoming friendly against Greece.

I'm glad he didn't call up Morientes, we need him the fcuker fit. But what I don't get is why he doesn't want to give Albiol a chance. I'm starting to think Raul hit on Aragones' grandaughter or something.

Good to see Angulo called up though. I'm happy he's recieving these numerous call ups, even though at times he doesn't seem to deserve it. I guess Spain lacks good, mentally stable (Navas needs a kick in the head) right wingers.

Anymore mestalla, Miguel and Caneira for Portugal right?

Hildebrand for Germany.

Who else?
Do we even have more foreigners?

We are a team of Spaniards

RaĂşl Albiol is too good to have Aragones as coach.

Those guys are favorites for their respected NT coaches so I think they'll be called up if they have any friendlies.

Zigic is a doubt for Serbia due to injury.

Canizares should be called up too but Aragones figures only one grandad is allowed :lala:

I don't know who's the better keeper at the moment Reina or Canizares, but personally I'd prefer Santiago and of course I'm biased all the way ;)

Not really. :D Edu, Zigic and Moretti are the others.

And the two Portugese lads and Hildebrand.
Considering how many spanish players that are playing in Barca or RM
Or how many english born players who play in one of the top four PL clubs.

Then we are quite notable for having many spaniards

Yeah, but apparantly the ITALIAN nt doesn't like having players in their squads who play outside of italy.
The problem with Moretti is that he's hard to notice. He doesn't do anything spectacular to gain attentionm like going forward or crossing.

But he's a very, very consistent defensive fullback. The number of goals we conceded last season from his side can be counted with one hand.

Moretti or Oddo/Zambrotta(Zambrotta is a different player with the NT, he's stinking up the field on purpose with Barcelona:D)
Italy plays with 4 defenders and 1 DM/2 CM, surely they need attacking fullbacks.
Moretti was sooo close to being called up, the day Donadoni wanted to bring him in he made a huge blunder vs Roma in the CL.

Luis Aragones blasted the state of the Toumba Stadium's pitch after inspecting the turf ahead of tonight's planned friendly between his Spain side and hosts Greece.

"It's been a long time since I saw a pitch that bad," he blared. "It's worrying, because the risk of injury is heavily multiplied on such a field.

"It's just not fit for playing. It is dangerous."

He indicated that he'd rather see the game suspended than have the possibility of injury take place.

"We know that an international match is hard to postpone, but it's not worth playing it on this pitch. We'll see what happens, but it's just not worth an injury," he added.

His players queued up to agree, each anxious to remain fit ahead of the Liga opener this weekend.

"I hope logic reigns here," sniffed Xavi, while Andres Palop added, "I'm surprised at the pitch. It's impassable. We will need to avoid injuries. The Liga is imminent and risk is at its highest when the turf is like this."

Mariano Pernia echoed his boss' earlier words, saying he'd "never seen a pitch like it since [he] was a kid.
I heard on my TV that the whole Spain team is refusing to play.
Glad Vicente isn't there, or else he would definitely be the first one to get injured.

Let's hope Angulo is playing for 90 minutes or until he gets injured. :pp

No, just kidding, I highly appreciate his complementing role in Valencia's squad.

I actually think that Angulo would become an awesome RB because he's fast, extreme stamina, very strong, good on the defence and has a quite good crossing.
Too bad Quique chooses Caneira (who's a very good CB) over him...
