Palermo dump Cheva bid Tuesday 29 June, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo claim that they have pulled out of the race to sign Lecce sensation Javier Ernesto Chevanton.

The two clubs have been in negotiations for weeks but the Serie A new boys seem to have given up hope of agreeing a fee.

"We won’t be signing Chevanton anymore," said President Maurizio Zamparini. "He simply costs too much."

The Via Del Mare outfit wanted £7.5m or £6m plus the co-ownership of winger Mario Alberto Santana.

Palermo though were only prepared to offer £5m and offer the loan of Romanian midfielder Paul Codrea.

Chevanton, who scored 19 League goals in the last campaign, could now stay with the Giallorossi for next season.

If Palermo have really decided to forget about the Uruguayan international then they are set to look elsewhere for a forward.

Whispers suggest that they could now plan to sign Antonio Di Natale from Empoli after their relegation.

The Italian international is also attracting interest from Fiorentina.

Barone move in doubt Wednesday 30 June, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simone Barone’s proposed move from Parma to Sampdoria could be on the verge of collapsing.

Whispers last week insisted that the transfer would go through but as of yet no agreement has been reached.

The midfielder, capped by Italy for the first time last term, is open to the switch but talks between the two clubs have stalled.

The Gialloblu, still in financial difficulties, value the player at £3.5m – a fee considered as too steep by Doria.

Should Sampdoria not be successful in getting that fee reduced then they could look elsewhere.

There seem to be two main options in the form of Vincenzo Italiano of Verona and Lazio’s Giuliano Giannichedda (pictured).

However, the latter is also being associated with a move to Serie A new boys Palermo.

I was checking a Palermo site the other day, and I was surprised to see so many names I recognised, Vannucchi, Toni, Vasari, Zauri and so on. They seem a bit better prepared for Serie A than most newly promoted teams do, and they are being linked to some very good players. I'll be watching them with great interest this coming season.

And I love their third shirt, mainly black with a little pink detail. I think I'd look good in it. :D

Gunners fight for Frey Saturday 3 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The race to sign Sebastien Frey is growing in intensity as Arsenal have revived their interest to counter Palermo and Barcelona.

French goalkeeper Frey is one of many stars on sale in order to help Parma escape from their financial crisis.

Administrators placed a price-tag of £3m on the shot-stopper, who has impressed during his three seasons at the Stadio Tardini.

Premiership Champions Arsenal have been heavily linked with the player in the past, but seemingly lost interest over the last few weeks.

During that time, Palermo have burst on to the scene with an offer of £3.5m and the chance to play regular first team football.

The newly promoted outfit is very ambitious and also launched a bid to sign Lecce hitman Javier Ernesto Chevanton this summer.

Meanwhile, there are also reports that there could be a third option for Frey in the form of Barcelona.

Palermo close on Chevanton
Sunday, 04 July 2004

by Nadia Carminati
Just days after appearing to give up on the chase for Lecce's Ernesto Javier Chevanton, Palermo are close to striking a deal for the striker.
The Serie A new boys stated the €10 million price tag for the Uruguayan was beyond their reach, but a compromise in the negotiations appears to have been found.

The Sicilian outfit's president Maurizio Zamparini has reportedly tabled an €8 million offer for Chevanton with Lecce also gaining joint-ownership of Argentinian Mario Alberto Santana.

It is believed Palermo would hand the South American a four-year deal that would net the in-demand star a whopping €5 million in the process.

Meanwhile, Chevanton is still in the dark over the latest developments and is due to return to Lecce to thrash out his future with the Italian outfit.

"My agent Paco Casal and Lecce haven't called me yet, I know nothing about my future," he said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'm coming back to Lecce, this way I can check the situation."

Yep, he was pretty good. The site was in Italian, but it wasn't so hard. It was one of these...

What I want to know is, where is all this money coming from? Being Palermo, of course us ignorant outsiders say it is mafia cash, but is that really the case? Does this look like a one-season all or nothing spending spree, or is it going to be sustained over the next five/ten years?

Cheva close to Palermo Monday 5 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo’s bid to sign Javier Ernesto Chevanton is back on after transfer talks with Lecce resumed.

The newly promoted outfit claimed to have last week lost interest in the swoop given his market valuation.

However, Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini met with President Rico Semeraro and sporting director Pantaleo Corvino over the weekend for more negotiations.

Whispers suggest that a deal is very close given the current difference between the offer and the desired amount.

Lecce are understood to have asked for £7.5m, while the Sicilian outfit have tabled a £6.5m offer.

A compromise is expected to be reached in the near future for the striker, who netted 19 League goals last season.

Meanwhile, Palermo are still being linked with a new goalkeeper after their return to the top flight.

Their primary objective is Sebastien Frey of Parma who should be sold given the club’s financial problems.

If that move collapses then Zamparini is set to knock on Milan’s door for Italian international Christian Abbiati.

Palermo grab Argentine hitman Tuesday 6 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Serie A new boys Palermo continue to reinforce their squad with Estudiantes striker Ernesto Farias, while Jay Bothroyd is on the move.

The Rosanero have snapped up 24-year-old hitman Farias after he netted five goals in 12 games during the Clausura championship.

President Maurizio Zamparini announced that he had paid £3m for Farias, and hinted that this was not the last signing for this week.

The Sicilians are also closing in on Lecce central defender Lorenzo Stovini, while talks are still in place for Uruguayan forward Javier Ernesto Chevanton.

Meanwhile, Jay Bothroyd may well have played his last Italian League match following his spell at Perugia.

The former Arsenal and Coventry City striker (pictured) started his Serie A career with a bang, scoring on his debut, but struggled to get first team football during the latter stages of the campaign.

The Grifoni are willing to release him for approximately £1.8m and the first clubs said to be showing interest are Crystal Palace and French outfit Sochaux.

Frey sale hits problems Wednesday 7 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma goalkeeper Sebastien Frey is still unclear where he will be playing his football next season.

The Frenchman has been linked with an exit from the cash-strapped outfit but a transfer is proving problematic.

"I believe that Frey will stay at Parma or he will be loaned out for one season," stated his agent Vincenzo Morabito.

"There was talk that Chelsea were interested in him but they’ve opted to sign Petr Cech instead.

"Arsenal won’t be buying any ‘keepers this summer, while Bayern Munich have told us that they will keep Oliver Kahn.

"Sebastian has a big salary and he’ll be loaned out if Parma feel they can’t afford his wages."

A possible loan switch to newly promoted Palermo may be on the cards as they are looking for a new shot stopper.

In other transfer news, Lecce have secured themselves the loan of former Chelsea ace Sam Dalla Bona. The midfielder, who is owned by Milan, spent last term at Bologna.

Lecce have also captured midfielder Francesco Marianini, on a four-year deal, from Livorno.

The Giallorossi have today confirmed that star striker Javier Ernesto Chevanton is on the verge of joining Palermo.

"Lecce have reached an agreement with Palermo," stated Lecce director Pantaleo Corvino. "The deal is basically done."

The Uruguayan, linked with moves to Milan and Juventus, scored 19 goals in Serie A last year.

Top-flight new boys Messina have signed Mirko Conte from Sampdoria. The central defender is now 30.

The Sicilian club are also keen on completing a loan swoop for Massimo Donati. The Milan midfielder was at Samp last season.

Confusion on Cheva-Inter claims Friday 9 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lecce have issued a denial after reports emerged that Inter had captured Javier Ernesto Chevanton in order to loan him out to Fiorentina, but Palermo claim otherwise.

Late this afternoon several news services in Italy published claims that the Nerazzurri had jumped in with a £10m bid for the Uruguayan hitman.

Chevanton had been in advanced negotiations with Palermo, but according to newspapers Inter had grabbed the player with the intention of then selling half his contract to newly promoted Fiorentina.

This would have been particularly galling for Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini, as last week he saw a deal with Nicolas Burdisso collapse in the final stages so that he could join Inter instead.

However, Lecce were quick to issue a denial and end speculation just as it had started to gain credence.

“This story is completely untrue,” stressed Lecce director of sport Pantaleo Corvino. “We already have a deal with Palermo and have agreed terms. There is nothing else to say.”

Not only did the Southerners assure that Chevanton was set to keep his word with Palermo, but they also denied any approach from the Nerazzurri.

“Inter have never contacted us about Chevanton,” added Corvino. “I really don’t know where these stories came from.”

This is not the version of events given by Rosanero chief Zamparini, who accused his agents of underhand practices.

“The truth is that 30 per cent of Chevanton’s contract belongs to his agents,” snapped the former Venezia patron. “I don’t know if Inter are willing to accept this state of affairs, but Palermo will not negotiate under these conditions.”

Inter have reacted furiously to these claims of foul play and issued a statement demanding an apology from Zamparini.

Palermo renew Inter attack Sunday 11 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini has launched another attack on Inter’s working practices after the Javier Chevanton move collapsed.

Lecce had agreed to sell the striker to the Rosanero this week, but on Friday evening Zamparini claimed Inter were in talks with Chevanton’s agents to steal him out from under their noses.

The Nerazzurri demanded an apology and threatened to sue Zamparini, but he has added more fuel to the fire.

“In all out transfer targets this summer I have found Inter there as well,” he snapped sarcastically. “From now on I’ve told my directors to ask permission from the Nerazzurri before contacting any player.”

Relations between the two clubs were already strained after a deal with Nicolas Andres Burdisso crumbled so that he could join the San Siro outfit instead, but the Chevanton saga is a curious one.

“There should be a certain style and professionalism between Presidents,” continued Zamparini, “and I thought that Inter had that.”

“If I am proved wrong about this, then I’ll call Massimo Moratti personally and apologise ten times. But if Chevanton does join Inter and is then loaned out to Fiorentina, as I expect him to be, then those involved should have nothing but shame in their hearts.”

Both Inter and the Viola have publicly denied making a move for Chevanton, while his owners Lecce claim these clubs have never approached them.

“My bitterness is not so much with Chevanton,” added the Palermo chief, “but rather because of this lack of co-operation between clubs. I wish we could go back to the good old days, as there are no values anymore. I am still waiting for Moratti’s phone call to tell me why Burdisso changed his mind at the last minute.”

Zamparini ended his tirade with a look to the future and their post-Chevanton transfer policy included another dig at the Nerazzurri.

“We have everyone we need in defence and attack. We’re now looking for a midfielder, so I’ll ask Inter if I’m allowed to sign Simone Barone of Parma or Chievo’s Simone Perrotta.”

Palermo snub Cheva chase Monday 12 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo have officially pulled out of the race to sign Lecce hotshot Javier Ernesto Chevanton.

The newly promoted club were expected to sign the striker until a bizarre twist on Friday evening.

Reports now claim that Chevanton will be signed by Inter, who will then send him on loan to Fiorentina.

"The player is no longer in our plans," Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini insisted on Monday.

Zamparini revealed that he today received a phone call from Juve director Luciano Moggi who was ready to organise a meeting between Palermo and Paco Casal, the player’s agent.

"I thanked Moggi for his offer but we don’t want the player anymore," added a disappointed Zamparini.

"I consider myself to be offended by the behaviour of (Inter owner Massimo) Moratti. I don’t understand why Inter and Fiorentina have joined forces against us."

Palermo seek to beat Tottenham for Diomansy
tribalfootball.com - July 13, 2004

Palermo have been linked with Modena striker Diomansy Kamara.

The powerful centre-forward has been in talks with Tottenham for the past three weeks, though the trail has gone cold over the last seven days.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini is aware that Modena are prepared to sell the 24 year-old and is considering the striker as an alternative to Lecce's Javier Chevanton.

Talks between Palermo and Lecce collapsed last week, forcing Zamparini to seek other transfer targets.

Viola deny Cheva deal Tuesday 13 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mystery surrounds the future of Lecce’s Javier Ernesto Chevanton after Fiorentina insisted they wouldn’t sign him.

It was believed that the forward would be captured by Inter and then sent on loan to the Viola next season.

Yet Florentine transfer chief Fabrizio Lucchesi has dismissed speculation that they will net the Uruguayan.

"We haven’t held any talks for Chevanton and we won’t be in the future," sporting director Fabrizio Lucchesi said.

"We are evaluating bids for a number of players who are of interest to us but Chevanton is not one of them."

Chevanton, 19 goals last season, was originally expected to join Palermo after the two clubs agreed a fee.

However, the Sicilian outfit pulled out after Inter had allegedly stepped in to sign him at the last minute.

"We’ve been implicated in this story through no fault of our own," continued the Tuscan official.

"We have a good relationship with Inter and have discussed players with them, but we’ve never talked about buying Chevanton."

Meanwhile, Torino have sold defender Paolo Castellini – who spent last season on loan at Brescia – to Spanish side Seville.

Palermo want Chievo duo Wednesday 14 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo have renewed their interest in the Chievo pair of Simone Perrotta and Andrea Barzagli.

The Sicilian outfit, who seem to have lost out to Monaco in the race to sign Lecce ace Javier Ernesto Chevanton, are looking to substantially strengthen their squad.

Barzagli is an Under-21 international who is widely regarded as one of the country’s most promising central defenders.

Perrotta (pictured) has also been linked with Palermo for some time but whispers suggest he will join Roma instead.

The Giallorossi have reportedly agreed a fee with Chievo for the international but they can’t sign him until they finally sell Emerson to Juventus.

That could then see Palermo switch their attention to Parma’s Simone Barone who was excellent last term.

The midfielder, who could travel to the Olympics this summer, has also been associated with Samp recently.

Palermo are ready to pay the Stadio Tardini side approximately £3m to complete Barone’s signing.

Meanwhile, Francisco Govinho Lima has left Italian football after agreeing a two-year deal with Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 33-year-old, formerly of Lecce and Bologna, has joined on a free transfer after his contract at Roma expired.
