AS Roma Keen On Robinho
Latest News | Latest Transfer News | News Archive

12/11/2002. Young Brazilian forward Robinho could be on his way to the Italian capital.

According to "La Gazzetta dello Sport", AS Roma are interested in the diminutive player.

The 18-year-old was one of the highlights of Santos this season, when the team made it to the final of the Brazilian Championship and has the advantage against Corinthians for the last match to be played next Sunday.

Robinho is fast and skilful but a representative from Santos made it clear that he will only leave Vila Belmiro for US$ 35 million.

Besides, the player himself does not seem very keen on a move to Europe at this moment. "I am too young to leave the country right now," he said.

Italian Clubs Chase Diego
Latest News | Latest Transfer News | News Archive

Diego is Europe bound (www.santosfc.com.br)
12/11/2002. Great matches played for the Brazilian side Santos might lead the midfielder Diego to the European football scene very soon.

According to "La Gazzetta dello Sport", Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid are interested in the 17 year-old playmaker. And that's not all, the article published by the Italian paper also mentioned Inter and Bayer Leverkusen as possible destinations for the sensational teenager.

When asked about a move to Europe, Diego was diplomatic.

"Of course I would love to go to Europe, but I am not in a hurry. I have a contract with Santos and like the team that first gave me a chance", he said.

Happy with all the speculation, Diego revealed that he would prefer to play in Italy: "Its great to know that so many teams are supposedly after me. Milan would be great, but there are other interesting prospects. Juventus, for instance has a very similar jersey to Santos. The first club to make a good offer is good for me," he concluded.

According to his agent, Dino Lamberti, Diego will not stay at Vila Belmiro. "Its up to Diego to decide when to leave. He might leave in January, but I guess that will happen in June."

The club that really wants Diego will have to negotiate, as Santos wants US$ 50 million for their young talent.

Cafu to decide between Man Utd and Arsenal for next move
tribalfootball.com - December 12, 2002

AS Roma fullback Cafu is ready to follow teammate Gabriel Batistuta to England next season.
The Brazilian has decided to end his European career in the Premiership and has received offers from both Manchester United and Arsenal in recent weeks.

The two deals are similar - a two-year contract worth £1.2 million-a-season with the option of a third year.

Cafu comes out of contract in June and wants regular first team football to hold his place in Brazil's national team leading up to the 2006 World Cup.

His advisors are said to be in talks with both English clubs and the Brazilian will spend the next months deciding whether to live in London or Manchester next year.

Ronaldinho move on hold Monday 16 December, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ronaldinho’s proposed move to Serie A has been put on hold for at least another six months by Paris SG.

Speculation in recent weeks had suggested that the Brazilian could move this January but the PSG President has ruled out that possibility.

"Our best players, those that can help us win things, will not be leaving this club in the winter," Laurent Perpere told French newspaper ‘Le Monde.’

The World Cup winner, full name Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, reportedly wants a move away from the capital club due to his relationship with under-fire boss Luis Fernandez.

The attacking midfielder has been linked with a number of clubs since his performances for his national side in Korea and Japan.

Inter, Milan, Juventus and Manchester United are just some of the clubs that are tracking the £20m rated talent.

Santos youngsters Robinho and Diego not for sale
By Brian Homewood

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Brazilian champions Santos said on Tuesday that teenagers Diego and Robinho, rated as the club's hottest properties, were not for sale.
'Robinho and Diego have just completed the first years of five-year contracts,' club spokesman Aldo Neto told Reuters. 'You can say they are not for sale.'

Eighteen-year-old Robinho agreed that it was too early for a move abroad. 'I'm very young to leave Brazil. I don't think I'm ready for it,' he told Globo television.

Brazilian media are predicting that the club will have a hard time fending off the multi- million dollar offers expected to arrive from European clubs, especially after Robinho's display on Sunday in the final of the Brazilian championship.

Robinho, who taunts and torments defenders with his precocious dribbling, won and converted a penalty, then set up two more goals as Santos beat Corinthians 3-2 to complete a 5-2 aggregate win.

His performance was given rave reviews and had commentators debating whether he bore more resemblance to Pele or Garrincha.

Seventeen-year-old Diego, who wears the Santos number ten shirt which once belonged to Pele, also had an outstanding championship despite hobbling off injured in the first minute of Sunday's final.

Neto said that Real Madrid made a $2 million offer for Diego two years ago, when he was still in the club's youth divisions, but Santos turned it down. He could not put a figure on how much Diego or Robinho might be worth now.

REINFORCEMENTS

'I don't know and, in any case, I'm not authorised to say,' he said.

Neto said that Santos's priority was next year's Libertadores Cup, when the club will end an 18-year absence from South America's most important club tournament.

'The idea is to keep the side intact for the Libertadores and bring in two or three reinforcements,' said Neto.

But Santos still have some negotiating to do.

Coach Emerson Leao, who has resurrected his own career since joining the club in June, is due to meet president Marcelo Teixeira on Wednesday to renew his own contract.

Leao, fired by Brazil in June 2001 after only eight months in charge of the national team, has already warned that he will look elsewhere if agreement is not reached quickly.

Several players have contracts which end in January, including Alberto - the club's top scorer in the championship with 12 goals - and left-back Leo, who scored the winning goal on Sunday.

'I want to stay but it depends on the negotiations,' said Leo.

No Reysol deal for Brazilian Sampaio

TOKYO, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Former Brazil midfielder Cesar Sampaio has failed to win a new contract with Kashiwa Reysol next season, officials of the J-League club said on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old, who finished as a runner-up with Brazil at the 1998 World Cup in France, joined Reysol from Brazilian club Corinthians in February on an 11-month contract.

Sampaio also had spells at Palmeiras and Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna.

He did not enjoy the best of seasons at Reysol, who sacked English manager Steve Perryman in August and avoided relegation only after the last round of J-League this month.

Sampaio scored three goals in 26 appearances at Reysol.

Romario In Talks With Barcelona?
Latest News | Latest Transfer News | News Archive

Romario to return to Barcelona?
12/18/2002. Catalan TV channel TV3 announced today that FC Barcelona could be in talks with..... Romario (!) in order to sign him during the winter break.

Romario, who won the 1993/1994 Spanish Liga with Barcelona, would return to the Camp Nou on a 6 month contract. From a financial point of view the transfer would be relatively cheap one for the Azulgranas since the Brazilian forward is currently a free agent.

Barcelona have spent the whole year looking for a centre forward, with names such as Jardel, Morientes and Salas mentioned in connection with Luis Van Gaal's side.

While Romario is 36 years old, nobody can deny that he still has a passion for the game and he may just be the trick that president Joan Gaspart needs to pull out of the bag and silence his critics.

Kleberson admits Roma option Monday 23 December, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson has confirmed that he could join Roma once the January transfer window opens.

The Atletico Panamense ace is wanted by a number of European clubs and the midfielder and his agent have confirmed that the Giallorossi are interested.

"I don¡¦t want to say too much about my future because everything is in the hands of my agent," Kleberson has stated.

"People are saying that I am very close to agreeing terms with Celtic. But I am getting rather confused at the minute.

"At this time I don¡¦t know whether I have to start learning English, Italian or German. In any case I know that there is a great difference between Rome, Glasgow, Leeds and Leverkusen."

Kleberson¡¦s agent added: "We have already spoken to Leeds and Celtic are a very prestigious side who are interested.

"But Kleberson is a world champion who wants to join a club with great ambitions. We will need to evaluate all the options very carefully."

Roma are set to leave their mark in the January transfer window as they try to strengthen their squad in a bid to get back into the title race.

Boss Fabio Capello (pictured) is desperate for a new midfielder after his club failed to sign Edgar Davids from Juventus this summer.

The Olimpico outfit have already been linked with a move for Leeds¡¦ unsettled midfielder Olivier Dacourt and Chievo¡¦s Simone Perrotta.

Celtic battle Leeds for Kleberson

Dominic Raynor

Scottish champions Glasgow Celtic are set to sign Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson from under the nose of Premiership club Leeds United.

Kleberson: A wanted man (CliveBrunskill/GettyImages)

Manager Terry Venables had reportedly agreed a deal with Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense for the 23-year-old, only for the Leeds board to scupper the transfer.

The Elland Road officials believed the midfielder, who has never played in Europe, posed too much of a risk and now Celtic are set to sign Kleberson when the transfer window opens in January.

Celtic are facing a tough title challenge from Old Firm rivals Rangers and manager Martin O'Neill is keen to bolster his squad with the ?5million acquisition of Kleberson.

And the World Cup star is also keen on a move to Celtic. 'I am very interested in finding out more about Scotland,' he told Sky Sports.

'If I do go to Celtic I will give everything I have. I am learning about the rivalry with Rangers and it sounds the type of thing I'd enjoy.

'I also know Brazilian players haven't made an impact in Scotland and it's time for that to change. That will be an extra challenge for me.

'I can only say I am deeply honoured that Celtic are interested in me because they are a team with a great history and I hope an even greater future.'

Kleberson's agent Marcel Figer has confirmed the approach. 'Celtic's interest is concrete,' he explained.

'Kleberson is a World Cup winner and my priority is to find him the right club. He needs a big team with plenty of ambition and organisation and Celtic meet those requirements.'

About Scheidt's return to Scotland, check out this thread on the Scottish forums.

Scheidt declared that he wants to make 2003 "the year of Scheidt" and the fans are ridiculing him; a "scheidt year" sounds like "ano de merda", so they're exchanging puns about how he will be an 'excrement' addition to the squad and stuff like that. :D

The man is a hero for Celtic fans! :howler:

Leeds favourites as Celtic cool Kleberson interest
tribalfootball.com - December 26, 2002

Celtic boss Martin O'Neill has all but ruled out a January move for Atletico Paranaense midfielder Kleberson.
The Brazilian is in advanced talks with Leeds United, though Celtic have also been credited with serious interest by the player's agent.

O'Neill said, "First of all when we obtained the work permit it was a loan with a view to seeing how things went - whether he would like the scene and whether he would fit in.

"He has the ability to feature in the club's future, but we were interested in whether he would take to it so a loan was the sensible outcome for the first few months.

"But now things have changed in that there are a number of teams who are wanting to buy him so that's out of the question.

"A loan is another issue and I wouldn't start ruling anything in and out at the minute, but if you want my honest opinion then I would say it is unlikely from our view point."

Scheidt to earn £1.5M for nothing as Celtic face work permit trouble
tribalfootball.com - December 26, 2002

Celtic face having to pay Rafael Scheidt over £1.5 million for the next 18 months - for doing nothing!
The Brazilian cannot earn a new work permit and is unwanted in his native Brazil because of his big pay demands.

Scheidt is due back with Celtic next week after over a year on-loan with Corinthians.

Hoops boss Martin O'Neill explained: "The work permit is a problem and the biggest obstacle as regards replacing it is the fact that Rafael doesn't play for his country.

"Rafael is entitled to be paid the £20,000 a week he was getting before he left. That's what is in his contract."
