Thiago, futbolista o artista?

I found an article written by Miguel Rico (ex-Sport, now in EMD) that reflects my opinion with perfection:

Thiago Alcántara, 20 years old, keeps enough talent to play for lots of seasons in Barça, but at the same time (things of the age) he still lacks aspects that make his definitive step into the first team difficult. The essential aspect, to decide in an immediate manner if he wants to be a football player, in big letters, or he considers that it's enough to the artist he already is, which would be enough to play in any other Primera División team.

And the thing is that Thiago, as it was Iván De la Peña in his time, the personified quality. A midfielder born for Barça. The prototipe of its unique style. Exceptional class, panoramic vision, thrilling dribbligs, deadly last pass, insulting youth... but (yet) not too much head to consider the consequences of his spectacular, but not always necessary, individual actions.

That is the essential problem Thiago must solve and the one that, to satisfy we his club of fans, will finish solving, especially considering previous experiences of similar talent that ended up far from the potential they had in Barça.

The question is that Thaigo plays in maximum risk zone and any lost ball can be deadly for Barça. In that zone, you can not think in individual, but in colective. And the obligation is not nice play, but easy play, a thing that Thiago tends to forget opting for the difficult play... for the forbidden... like the horizontal pass that provoked a foul of Keita and the goal of Levante.

An error of an artist that wouldn't have committed the football player that Thiago will end up being.

I think this is a must read to see Thiago's football. I was surprised by the prasing he got, since I still have doubts. I think Guardiola must have very serious conversations with him... for his good!

Thiago is a bit like Deco. Deco lost the ball much more compared to Xavi. But even Thiago doesn't lose it too often. I understand people wanting to see "the second Xavi" more than "the second Deco", and I personally always liked Xavi more than Deco, but Deco was world class with us as well.

When I watched Busquets for the first 10-20 games, I thought "no way this guy will be a starter". Thiago needs time, but I think he has already started far better than many of our first team players. Yes, he might lose ball more than Iniesta & Xavi, but so what? Being a world class player like Deco is also good.

I am surprised at this article really. Thiago is easily the best European player in his age group (based on Spanish youth NT sides). If we diss him, then we might have to wait another 20 years until next Xavi. It's not like every Barca kid is Xavi quality.

IMO, he's no way near Deco. As the article well pointed out, Thiago is more like De la Peña when the guy appears: a wonder kid that still is far to understand the basics of the game.

Thiago has a lot of talent. But he needs to put that talent to serve the team. It's not always necessary to do fancy movements. Forget about Xavi and look at other players... if you don't see it clear, go backwards and play simple. I know Thiago has a lot of talent to do great things, but many times he makes errors that give our rivals a counter.

This kind of criticism is necessary, not here, but internally, so the guy learns to play football. First, serve the team... and, don't worry, this team will serve you moments to shine.

I am not killing him... I'm poiting out the aspects that he must improve. Football is more than just a fancy moment. If he doesn't learn this lesson, he'll end up like Iván De la Peña. Seriously.

nothing new.
When i pointed about his stupidity and madridista arrogance i received negative views... "normal" people can see beyond.

This is the type of guy with crap parents (Ronnie mom), but even worst, he has developed a high level of yo-ism. Thus, he grows thanks to his ambition and worship-me desires (all madridistas), not because a pure will (Messi).
Eventually, this dream once-time-in-life- (and-history) Barca will end, maybe when these guys take charge: Bojan-the-super-9, Cesc-the-arse-pvssy, Fontas-the-commitedXD, Deulofeu (who looks even worst than Thiago), ....

BTW, 99% of Rico articles are about praising and sucking rosell, but oh,,,, this article belongs to the 1%. nice find, he refined his glasses.

Posted this in the other thread as well (vs Levante).

Besides being very talented, this guy has a style that I adore a lot. I just love seeing him running and controlling the ball. This guy has a future here. :D

What is Miguel Rico looking to accomplish with this article? A guy who has been around football should know that the young guys are the last to be criticized and the first to be praised. Thiago has an ego and an artistic vein on the pitch, and? What 20 year old doesn't have a high opinion of himself? The boy needs time to develop and for some guy like Rico to come and put the target on him, the "watch this space" so that now critical eyes are turned on him, that's just great.

Why not write this article and keep it on file for another 2 years? Or at least until he gets into double digits in terms of performances with the first team in one year. He lacks minutes, exposure to big pressures and maturity, but he doesn't lack talent. If you something to grow, you don't crowd it, you give it space.

I guess the case is there as the players coming from La Masia lately have been quite unselfish, for the team kinda guys and the ones who dont make it are the bit more selfish ones. For a 20 yo i guess its normal but there is some point in it and the resemblence is there.

Until he has his feet on the ground im not worried but if this starts messing with the teams performance, ill start worrying.

It's time to revive this thread. Thiago gets more and more public appreciation, so we should cover it with a regularly updated thread.

He's probably the next player whom your neighbor will notice late and you will yell at him "I was telling you about his kid, you weren't listen!"

After the game against Chelsea 6 years ago, I was sitting in a bus with a former football player of the local club and I was telling him about La Masia and Messi. He told me: "No, you're wrong, I watched the Argentinean and his name is Maxi Lopez."

What is common for Messi and Thiago is their playing arrogance. They are bold enough to do any dribble or score nevertheless the game situation and pressure.

Thiago deserves a better attention.

Hahaha, same here:howler:

Anyhow, the thing with him is that Messis position was more up the field where this arrogance is more usual. In a midfield position i prefer the safebet guys a bit more.

Personal preferences aside, Thiago really is the best young gun, the prodigy at the team and irregardless of his style, he will have his impact. Also after the contract extension, i feel more safe with him then i did before. He seems to be "loyal" to the project and willing to fight for his place under the sun.

Still worried about K4.

I prefer to be careful with the hypes of young players who have just play 10 games in Primera División. Step by step... because when you go too fast, you may end up in Roma or Racing, as a couple of super-kids I know.

If Thiago were a publicly traded company I'd buy shares right now. His value is soaring and will keep on doing that for a long while yet.

I'm very optimistic because the characteristics that he needs to improve are the ones that Pep deals the best, like responsibility and awareness. Just look Busi. He was so reckless before and now he plays the fuse positions like DM and CD.

#27 ·
Agreed. However Thiago has an ego. An ego isn't entirely a bad thing, but I think his might be a bit over the top. It might take a lot of work to instill some of that discipline into Thiago and don't seem that patient to me. I'd be it works out at the end of the day, but Thiago is the closest thing to a bad boy we got.

He was absolutely incredible against Bayern Munich. They didn't have a player of his quality. Thiago could end up being even more complete than Iniesta, who is more complete than Xavi.

WOW. I hope he gets a lot of playing time.

It's only pre-season yet but the he's 'knocking down the door' with a friggin sledgehammer.

He brings another dimension with his long-range shots which is something we lacked before. ManU played park the bus and sometimes a long range driver is what's required.

Agreed. ManU decided to employ parking the bus against Barca B, and we had trouble breaking them without Messi and Xavi. Fair enough, but we have a new superstar in the making, who can not only pass, dribble, but also shoot! :D
